    La presente tesis explora un area de la fisica ampliamente establecida: dinamica computacional de estructuras. El proposito es expandir los limites de la misma mediante la combinacion con otra disciplina como es el diseño y la optimizacion estructurales. Recientemente, ambas han experimentado avances significativos que,frecuentemente, han ocurrido de forma ajena una de la otra. Esta tesis busca servir de nexo entre el campo de la fisica y la ingenieria.El trabajo esta dividido en tres partes: mecanica variacional, optimizacion estructural e implementacion de una aplicacion de software para su uso en la practica real.La parte inicial trata la mecanica variacional desde el punto de vista determinista. Se dedican dos capitulos a demostrar la aplicabilidad de los funcionales energeticos en el analisis estructural. Primero, se hace un recorrido por el estado del arte de los metodos numericos para dinamica estructural; posteriormente, se emplean estos funcionales para comparar dichos metodos de forma objetiva y eficaz. Se demuestra como, una vez que los metodos han quedado agrupados de acuerdo al tipo de ecuaciones diferenciales que resuelven (ordinarias, parciales o algebraicas), es facil crear un marco de referencia para su evaluacion. Al hacerse la comparacion mediante equilibrio energetico el resultado es un valor escalar cuyo manejo es relativamente facil de interpretar.La segunda parte, donde se trata la optimizacion estructural, abarca tambien dos capitulos. En el primero se presentan y examinan las herramientas no deterministas utilizadas por los diseñadores estructurales y se pone de relevancia la importante distincion entre las herramientas de analisis y las de optimizacion. A continuacion, se desarrolla un marco para la caracterizacion objetiva de sistemas estructurales elaborado sobre la base de la mecanica estadistica y las caracteristicas energeticas de las estructuras. Finalmente, el marco se combina con un algoritmo de "Simulated Annealing" para la optimizacion de estructuras.En la tercera parte de la tesis el codigo resultante empleado en los experimentos numericos de los capitulos anteriores queda explicado. Este codigo, desarrollado mediante herramientas de programacion visual, permite la rapida implementacion de aplicaciones dentro de un entorno de CAD. para su posterior aplcacion a problemas reales.

    En esta tesis y sobre las condiciones actuales del planeta y las condiciones particulares de una España en crisis económica, se propone un estudio que permiita analizar la eficacia de rehabilitar la piel de los edificios existentes atendiendo a criterios energéticos, económicos y de emisiones de C02 eq.La piel del edificio es la parte más expuesta a las condiciones climáticas exteriores y condiciona la demanda de energía interna para conseguir el confort para hacerlo habitable. El estudio de la envolvente, su situación actual en cuanto a demandas energéticas ,económicas y que emisiones de C02, arrojará los resultados y bondades de una rehabilitación de ésta a mediano y largo plazo.Como objeto de estudio se centró en el barrio de Montbau, conjunto de edificios constituido por unos 30 edificios de diversas características, construido en los años sesenta que acusa en sus condiciones actuales pérdida de energía a través de su envolvente y demanda un alto consumo de esta para su calefacción y refrigeración, generando de emisiones de C02 eq a la atmósfera.Para el análisis y estudio de las condiciones y posibles afectaciones se establecieron los edificios tipo representativos : edificio A dúplex, edificio E/F bloque lineal,edificio Q torre. edificio unifamiliar UNI 14 para las viviendas adosadas.Una vez conocidas las demandas y la situación de la enlvolvente de los edificios tipo, el estudio propone soluciones constructivas para su rehabilitación,a través de las cuales se mejorarían las condiciones interiores , condiciones de confort, así como la necesaria reducción de emisiones de C02 eq a la atmósfera.Para realizar la diagnosis de los edificios y estudiar su comportami ento, se utilizó el programa Desingbuilder y como motor de cálculo interno, el programa Energyplus, programa desarrollado por el Departamento de Energía de los Estados Unidos. Con este se analizó el consumo de energía y emisiones de C02 eq en función de cómo está construido un edificio y cuáles son sus instalaciones .Se realizó un modelo de los 4 edificios tipo con el programa, sus características físicas y arquitectónicas, se definió su envolvente, carpinterías, filtraciones de aire, sistemas de calefacción, producción de agua caliente,,iluminación y mediante el programa DesingBuilder de simulación energética,se hizo una evaluación de la demanda actual de energía, emisiones de C02 eq y gasto económico (poniendo precio a la energía, valores del año 2012).Para analizar el comportami ento y necesidades en climas diferentes y localizaciones alternativas se hizo el análisis hipotético en ciudades con condiciones climáticas diferentes escogiendo Madrid y Gerona como alternativas. Así mismo se realizó el estudio de las afectaciones en cuanto a variación de sus posiciones para con los resultados, extrapolar el estudio al conjunto de edificaciones y obtener los resultados globales a nivel de barrio.A lo largo de estudio se verá el análisis detallado y la evolución de los resultados a través de cuadros y gráficas que acompañan el texto para arrojar las necesidades y gastos de los edificios sin rehabilitar y estos mismos tras la rehabilitación.Las mejoras evidentes con el cambio de las carpinterías ,la intervención de la envolvente y los aislamientos con las soluciones constructivas evidenciarán en cifras las bondades y la necesidad de estas intervenciones.La pertinencia de este estudio radica en la necesidad de enfrentar temas como la rehabilitación de edificios antes de contemplar la demolición o construcción del parque inmobiliario de cara a la sostenibilidad del planeta, para ofrecer una alternativa de futuro sostenible y albergo ycobijo en condiciones óptimas. Las cifras ofrecen resultados contundentes en cuanto a gastos, costes, ahorro de energía yemisiones de gases a la atmósfera,cuyos resultados en las gráficas y cuadros ofrecen una lectura que abre espacio a futuros trabajos de investigación y puesta en marcha de proyectos tanto a nivel local como mundial

    This paper considers the current status of our planet as well as the particular conditions of the economic crisis in Spain in order to propose an analysis of the efficiency involved in reconditioning the skin of the existing buildings by considering energetic, economic and C02q emission criteria. The skin of a building is the most weather-exposed part of a building and therefore determines the internal demand of energy to make the building comfortable and habitable. The study of the facade, its current status in terms of energetic and economic demands and in terms of C02 emissions will provide data on the results and benefits of reconditioning the skin of buildings in the medium and long term. The neighborhood of Montbau is the subject of this study. lt comprises around 30 buildings, each with several and different characteristics, built in the 1960s and their current features show loss of energy through their facades and demand a high consumption of energy to obtain heating and cooling conditions at the same time that generate C02eq emissions to the atmosphere. In order to analyze and study the conditions and possible affectation on these buildings, this paper worked on a representative sample to obtain data. The sample comprises the following buildings: Duplex Apartment Building A, Building E/F Bloque Lineal, Tower Building Q, and Building UNI 14 as the sample for detached and semi-detached buildings. With the data collected regarding the needs and facade situation of the sample buildings, this paper proposes reconditioning, constructive solutions to improve the internal conditions and comfort of such buildings as well as the reduction of C02eq emissions. To assess the conditions of the sample buildings and, therefore, study their behavior, Desingbuilder-design software- and Energyplus - internal calculation engine- (developed by the US Department of Energy) software was used. Energyplus was used to analyze energy consumption and C02eq emissions to obtain data regarding how buildings were built and which their installations are. A model of the 4 sample buildings was created by using Energyplus, taking into account the physical and architectural features of the sample buildings as well as their facades, woodworks, air leaks, heating and cooling systems, hot water production, and illumination. By using Energy Simulation DesingBuilder, an evaluation of the current demand of energy, C02eq emissions and economic expenditure analysis (pricing energy consumption based on 2012 prices) was conducted. In order to analyze the behavior and the needs in altemative weather conditions and locations, Madrid and Gerona were chosen as sample cities where hypothetical conditions will apply. Likewise, an affectation analysis was conducted based on location differences to extrapolate the analysis and apply it to the sample buildings and therefore obtain global results at neighborhood level. The detailed analysis and evolution of results is shown throughout this paper by using graphs and tables supporting the text. The needs and expenses of the buildings before and after the reconditioning works are showed to prove the improvements. Changes in the woodworks, facades, and insulation works along with constructive solutions are proved in terms of figures showing the benefits and the need of implementing reconditioning works. The relevance of this paper is based on the need to tackle such topics as building reconditioning instead of considering total or partial demolition or construction of new housing developments to contribute to the sustainability of our planet and, at the same time, offer sustainable alternatives that are efficient, effective and optimal. The figures shown herein are astonishing in terms of expenses, costs, energy savings, and C02eq emissions. The graphs and tables used herein offer a wider picture that can be expanded through fuure research and implementation of projects locally and globally.

    En climas poco severos y con elevada exposición solar, la envolvente de un edificio acristalado requiere un sistema eficaz para el control de la radiación incidente y las excesivas ganancias debidas a las exposiciones en periodos cálidos, así como para controlar las pérdidas energéticas en periodos fríos. Algunos edificios de uso terciario totalmente acristalados, como los de oficina, son espacios con altas cargas internas y, si están ubicados en zonas climáticas apropiadas, no tienen una gran demanda de calefacción. Estos edificios tienen un ciclo de uso diario corto de 8-9 horas, por lo que el sistema de calefacción más adecuado sería uno que produjera un calentamiento rápido. En estas tipologías edificatorias se suelen utilizar sistemas de vidrio de alta prestaciones tecnológicas como los Bajos Emisivos que mejoran el comportamiento energético de la envolvente. En climas extremos este vidrio se utiliza también para mejorar su comportamiento por medio de una tecnología innovadora, conocida como Electrically Heated Windows (Vidrio Calentado Eléctricamente, en adelante EHG). Este sistema consta de un vidrio de doble hoja, de las cuales al menos una de ellas está equipada con una capa bajo emisiva electrificada, que adecuadamente controlada puede ser un sistema tecnológico radiante, capaz de aportar la demanda de calefacción. En este trabajo se expone un proyecto de investigación que está aún en desarrollo, en el cual se estudia las prestaciones energéticas de una envolvente acristalada constituida por un vidrio EHG, así como su ahorro energético frente a vidrios convencionales, en las diferentes condiciones climáticas. Para ello se desarrolla un modelo teórico y experimental, aplicables a estos tipos de acristalamientos. Se simula con una herramienta informática el comportamiento de estas tipologías de vidrio en las diferentes exposiciones con localización Madrid. A continuación, se comparan las simulaciones con los datos experimentales de los ensayos para verificar la concordancia entre los datos obtenidos y previstos. El objetivo es demostrar que el sistema EHG, adecuadamente controlado, puede emitir una potencia radiante suficiente para ser utilizado en invierno como sistema de calefacción (con bajas demandas), que se consigue manteniendo bajo el incremento entre la superficie radiante y la temperatura de confort, y así obteniendo una distribución uniforme de la radiación y un gradiente vertical adaptado. Por otra parte, en verano, reduce las ganancias térmicas por radiación, reduciendo la demanda de refrigeración.

    The urgent need to reconfigure urban areas to consume fewer resources, generate less pollution, be more resilient to the impacts of extreme events and become more sustainable in general, is widely recognised. To address these issues, requires integrated thinking across a range of urban systems, topics, issues and perspectives that are traditionally considered separately. This book introduces key results from the European Science Foundation funded COST Action TU0902 network that brought together researchers and practitioners involved in urban integrated assessment. Using case studies, theoretical approaches and reporting experience from across Europe this book explores the challenges and opportunities of urban integrated assessment through four perspectives: (i) Quantified integrated assessment modelling; (ii) Climate change adaptation and mitigation; (iii) Green and blue infrastructure; and, (iv) Urban policy and governance. The book closes by outlining priorities for future research and development and presents a generic framework for urban integrated assessment to analyze the potential benefits and trade-off of sustainability policies and interventions.

    In this study, a simulation - based multi - objective optimization was empl oyed to minimize energy loads, reduce CO 2 emissions and improve occupants’ health and comfort, considering cost - effectiveness of the design approach on two buildings of different typology – high rise and low - rise prefabricated buildings, in New Be l- grade, S erbia. Series of EEI (energy efficiency improvement) measures were impl e- mented, focusing optimization of building’s envelope and structure energy efficie n- cy, natural and mixed ventilation and HVAC systems optimal control, as well as o p- timization of PV inte grated building facade in synergy with the façade structure e n- ergy efficiency optimization. The main goal of the study was to verify the effectiv e- ness of the integrated design technics applied in both cases, by comparative analysis considering building typ ology, which determined the optimal solutions and a d- vantages for each building type. The results identify the certain differences not only in optimization of building’s envelope structure but also in RES integration (BIPV Panels). Building’s dynamic behavi our in Typical Meteor o logical Year of Belgrade has been analysed and optimized by the BPS - Building Performance Simulation .

    The goal of this research is to find the most suitable computer simulation software for assessment of urban design performance from physical point of view. Although there are many physical simulation tools available today, there is no one which covers all the needs of urban design. After initial research of available software, we have chosen to assess three applications: ENVI-met, Project Vasari and IES VE-Pro. The assessment is composed from two parts: functionality assessment , which deals with the available features of the application and useability assessment , which deals with the user experience and friendliness. Since different aspects of assessed functionality and useability are not equally important, we have also included pondering mechanism in order to find the most suitable software for specific requirements. C omplete assessment table is available online ( http://tiny.cc/env_app_evaluation ) , so that the reader can modify ponder values so that it can find the application that suits his or her needs best.

    Energy refurbishment of the existing housing stocks main goals are: to decrease fossil fuels consumption, to reduce the CO2 emissions, and to improve indoor environment quality. The main objective of the presented investigation was to evaluate the integrated design strategies applied in refurbishment of the prefabricated residential housing, in order to achieve energy savings accompanied with reduction of CO2 emissions and improvement of households’ health and comfort. Conducted study led to the preliminary design of energy refurbishment of the existing building, and its conversion to energy efficient building approaching Zero Energy and Zero CO2 emission status, covering minimized loads and energy needs exclusively by renewable energy sources. Building’s dynamic behavior and energy efficiency have been optimized implementing BPS. Refurbishment encompassed comprehensive optimization of building’s envelope structure, natural and mixed ventilation, and HVAC system. The implementation of a series of EEI (energy efficiency improvement) measures resulted in significant reduction of buildings energy loads. Locally available solar (BIPV) and groundwater via heat pump operation, as renewable energy sources (RES) have been selected to cover as more as possible of the building’s residual energy demand. Presented methodology and results of the performed analysis offer an opportunity to extend their application to other building blocks and neighbo rhoods, exploring refurbishment potential results if applied on greater urban scales within the whole city.

    This work applies the variational principles of Lagrange and Hamilton to the assessment of numerical methods of linear structural analysis. Different numerical methods are used to simulate the behaviour of three structural configurations and benchmarked in their computation of the Lagrangian action integral over time. According to the principle of energy conservation, the difference at each time step between the kinetic and the strain energies must equal the work done by the external forces. By computing this difference, the degree of accuracy of each combination of numerical methods can be assessed. Moreover, it is often difficult to perceive numerical instabilities due to the inherent complexities of the modelled structures. By means of the proposed procedure, these complexities can be globally controlled and visualized in a straightforward way. The paper presents the variational principles to be considered for the collection and computation of the energy-related parameters (kinetic, strain, dissipative, and external work). It then introduces a systematic framework within which the numerical methods can be compared in a qualitative as well as in a quantitative manner. Finally, a series of numerical experiments is conducted using three simple 2D models subjected to the effect of four different dynamic loadings.

    El següent article explica l’experiència docent pilot anomenada “Rehabilitem l’ETSAB?” que es va dur a terme dins del marc del programa Sostenibilitat, Tecnologia i Excel·lència per al 2015 (STEP2015) de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. “Rehabilitem l’ETSAB?” va consistir en un taller intensiu d’una setmana que es va realitzar a l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona durant el mes de juliol de 2010. L’objectiu del taller era crear un espai de reflexió sobre sostenibilitat i l’adequació de l’edificació existent als requeriments ambientals i climàtics actuals a través de la docència transversal portada a terme per professors de diferents matèries i departaments, les conferències temàtiques i el treball i debat en grups d’estudiants. Aprofitant els coneixements adquirits a les classes teòriques i els inputs de les conferències, els alumnes van treballar sobre els dos edificis de l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona analitzantlos i elaborant, a nivell conceptual, propostes de millora energètica i de rehabilitació sostenible.

    Touristic sector is a most sensitive one in Mediterranean countries like Greece or Spain. Buildings with traditional architecture in touristic places represent an attraction for tourists but to these buildings the integration of renewable energy sources is a difficult aspect. Energy saving in buildings is significant for the energy targets of EC for 2020 and the implementation of Renewable Energy Sources (R.E.S.) in traditional buildings always poses new challenges for designers. In this paper we include analysis for the implementation of R.E.S. respecting traditional building design and atmosphere, which signifies a new constriction, by also an opportunity, seeing the sustainability paradigm in a more general way. Solar thermal collectors, photovoltaic and wind turbines, are visible and need a special care to be also adapted with the architecture of the touristic sites. Currently developed innovative solar energy systems and integration aspects are presented and strategies for a further expansion are discussed.

    The Caribbean is a great holiday destination, along with Europe, Asia and South America. But it is one of the regions that depend more economically on the touristic sector. That is why there is a need to innovate and reinvent the touristic offer constantly. Throughout the years, tendencies and tourism types has changed and developed, adapting to the market and clients expectations. Beach hotel, all inclusive hotel offers, mountain tourism, hiking, ecotourism, city tourism, are some of the types of tourism that we highlight in this region. !owadays, in seeking to expand the offer to the clients, the hotels have included some variations in the services, such as Spas, golf, convention centers, big casinos, etc. The aim of this paper is to list the latest tendencies in hotel design and services in the Caribbean Region, and highlight its progresses in energy efficiency and sustainable design.

    Structural engineers significantly rely on the ubiquitous Finite Element Method (FEM) for mod - eling the physical behavior of their designs. How - ever, when it comes to certain types of nonlinearities either geometric, material or loading related (crack - ing, fracture, terrain-structure interaction, large dis - placements, textile structures...), this method pres - ents some limitations that lead to either less accurate models or numerical instabilities. In the recent past, a discipline named Flexible Multibody Dynamics is emerging strongly as a tool for physical simula - tion of phenomena. This involves knowledge from many areas such as linear algebra, calculus, geome - try, classical mechanics or computational geometry in order to deliver methods and tools for the virtual prototyping of complex mechanical systems. For the purpose of structural engineers an introduction in this entangled merge of different disciplines is necessary, also in engineering terms. The benefits associated to the use of these methods are many, as further comprehension of the physical behavior of the designed structures, higher levels of accuracy or the alternative ways of modeling engineering problems that can be achieved through them. The present paper aims to present an introductory sche - ma where most of the numerical methods involved are related and displayed to the average knowledge level of structural designers. It is also intended to give some scope to those who want to start into this fascinating area of research either with engineering background or not.

    L'objectiu de la tesi doctoral (Roset,2006) era descobrir els millors sistemes, procediments i continguts del que hauria d'ésser l'ensenyament de la física en la carrera de arquitectura. Hem fet la hipòtesi de que millorant la relació entre els llenguatges “matemàtic” i “gràfic”, com propis actualment de la física i de l'arquitectura, podrem millorar les dues disciplines. Hem desenvolupat la hipòtesi treballant sobre COM explicarem els conceptes de física als futurs arquitectes i fixant QUINS conceptes explicarem. A continuació, hem inventat un llenguatge gràfic per a representar els conceptes tant físics com arquitectònics així com les relacions entre ells. Després, hem proposat una manera concreta de fer aquestes explicacions tant per una assignatura com per un capítol concret de la mateixa. L'exemple totalment desenvolupat amb el capítol de Confort Tèrmic de l'assignatura Física de Medi Ambient a l'Arquitectura amb els tests realitzats a 29 estudiants durant la seva impartició ha permès confirmar la hipòtesi del treball i extreure unes altres conclusions inicialment no previstes.

    The objective of the doctoral thesis (Roset, 2006) was to discover the best systems, procedures and contents of what should be the teaching of physics within undergraduate architectural studies. The hypothesis was that by improving the relation between the “mathematical” and “graphical” languages, as they currently belong to physics and architecture, it would be possible to improve the two disciplines. The testing of the hypothesis was developed by considering HOW concepts belonging to physics are explained to future architects and deciding WHICH concepts should be explained. A graphical language was then invented to represent concepts belonging to physics as well as to architecture, and indeed the relation between them. Subsequently a concrete way of making these explanations was proposed, for a specific course as well as for a specific subject area thereof. The fully developed example within the subject area of Thermal Comfort in the course “Physics: from the environment to architecture”, was tested on some 29 students participating in the course, enabled the hypothesis and the reaching of a number of conclusions initially unforeseen.
