    The separation of the data and control planes simplify the implementation of SDN applications. The centralised architecture of a controller based on the OpenFlow protocol is appealing to the network operators. We have reviewed the concept of SDNs and its extension to optical networks, and constrained and unconstrained wireless access networks. The current status of the proposed and implemented SDN architectures is such that the ful¿lment of a SLA is an open issue. This aspect is left to be tackled by the SDN applications and the proposed architectures do not provide means to describe the interplay between different technology domains. In this paper we make an in depth analysis of the current proposed architectures and identify important challenges to be addressed by a novel integrated SDN architecture.

    It is quite easy to foresee that in the next years, the future generation ultra-high speed network infrastructures and equipments will be no longer constrained only by their pure transport capacity, but also by their energy consumption costs and environmental effects. In particular, large network infrastructures are now widely recognized to play a fundamental role in the emission of green-house gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, significantly afecting the environmental sustainability of new evolutions in network architectures as well as technological developments in communication devices. In this paper, a novel eco-sustainable Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) algorithm, based on shortest-path routing with an adaptive link weighting function relying on an extension of the OSPF-TE protocol to convey carbon footprint information, has been proposed to decrease the network ecological impact while balancing the traffic load and maintaining acceptable connection blocking rate. The trade-off between load balancing and carbon footprint is also analyzed to evaluate the efectiveness of the proposed strategy within the context of a real world network.

    Energy consumption is now one of the most important issues for network carriers, since the majority of the energy needed for their operation is consumed in the wireless access and optical transport networks. The continuous growth in the wireless customers and traffic volumes and the consequent energy demand on modern carriers¿ broadband infrastructures require reconsidering their energy efficiency, by starting from the formulation of new, more complete and representative network models that should become the foundations for modern energy-aware control plane architectures. Accordingly, this work presents a novel comprehensive energy model for next-generation wireless access-over-optical-transport networks characterized by hybrid power systems (i.e., multiple dynamically available power sources). The objective is to identify the energy-related information that need to be handled at the control plane layer to support energy-aware networking practices. Such information can be made available to suitable energy-aware routing and wavelength assignment algorithms that may exploit them to optimize the overall network energy-consumption and reducing the associated carbon footprint. The proposed model may be taken as a reference for the implementation of new energy-aware control plane protocols (routing and signaling) that make use of power-related considerations to achieve energy-efficiency and energy-awareness in wavelength-routed network infrastructures.

    In this paper we present EnergySave, a smart energy-saving system that, by leveraging the consolidated WoL (Wake on LAN) technology, allows the remote wake-up of PCs from a centralized management server, providing easy and secure power management capabilities for local or remote IP-based networks of personal computers (PCs). We also present a lightweight web-based platform implementing the remote management interface as less intrusively as possible. Finally, we model the mathematical saving functions to be used in order to evaluate through simulation the amount of potential energy savings, and hence the whole framework effectiveness, both in the general case and in a real case scenario. Results show that significant savings are achievable provided that the hardware supports the Wake-on-LAN specifications and that proper configuration of the Web server is set-up, allowing the WoL magic packet to travel to the destination hosts and wake them up only when they are really needed.

    In the last years, the research efforts in smart grids (SG) and telecommunication networks (TN) have been considerable but never converged to a common view and, due to the lack of strong interactions between the two worlds, only limited benefits have been achieved. We envision in this paper that future TN (as well as any other ICT application) will interact with the SG, enabling (1) the TN to know the energy source and cost that is currently powering its equipment, (2) to turn the TN into an active client which can request to the SG the quantity and quality (e.g. green) of energy that it needs, and (3) a service orchestration between SG supply system and TN operations. As a consequence, the enabled interoperability between TN and SG would allow TN to take energy-aware management decisions in function of energy-related information provided by the SG. For example, TN can route packets with the objective of optimizing green criteria, while SG can route the energy towards the TN clients with the objective of not wasting surpluses of green energy. These new energy and data routing capabilities can be exploited not only by SG operators and telecom carriers but also by any energy consumer/producer within the ICT world. This may include industry and institutional ICT premises, datacenters, home automation, wireless and mobile cellular networks, which will be able to implement their own energy-aware management and operations (M&O) by considering the quantity, quality and cost of the energy currently provided by the smart grid.

    New services like Video on demand/Internet Protocol Television, Voice over IP and high speed Internet access demand very high bandwidth to provide Triple Play services to the customers. The ADSL/ADLS2+ and the VDSL/VDSL2 copper- wire technologies deteriorate quickly with the distance and will be soon obsolete for supporting the ultra-high bandwidth requirements of the next future. One suitable long term solution for such a high bandwidth demand is employing optical fibers to customers premises (FTTH). In particular, two optical distribution network architectu res, GPON (gigabit passive optical network) and EP2P (E thernet point-to-point), are competing for the network access segment. This paper surveys the two technologies and evalua tes them from a quantitative techno-economic point of view, tr ying to identify which market scenarios are best served by EP2P and which are best served by GPON architectures for supporting the requirement of Triple Play applications .

    The containment of power consumption and the use of alternative green sources of energy are the new main goals of telecommunication operators, to cope with the rising energy costs, the increasingly rigid environmental standards, and the growing power requirements of modern high-performance networking devices. To address these challenges, we envision the necessity of introducing energy-efficiency and energy-awareness in the design, configuration and management of networks, and specifically in the design and implementation of enhanced control-plane protocols to be used in next generation networks. Accordingly, we focus on research and industrial challenges that foster new developments to decrease the carbon footprint while leveraging the capacities of highly dynamic, ultra-high-speed, networking. We critically discuss current approaches, research trends and technological innovations for the coming green era and we outline future perspectives towards new energy-oriented network planning, protocols and algorithms. We also combine all the above elements into a comprehensive energy-oriented network model within the context of a general constrained routing and wavelength assignment problem framework, and analyze and quantify through ILP formulations the savings that can be attained on the next generation networks.

    At present, data centers consume a considerable percentage of the worldwide produced electrical energy, equivalent to the electrical production of 26 nuclear power plants, and such energy demand is growing at fast pace due to the ever increasing data volumes to be processed, stored and accessed every day in the modern grid and cloud infrastructures. Such energy consumption growth scenario is clearly not sustainable and it is necessary to limit the data center power budget by controlling the absorbed energy while keeping the desired level of service. In this paper, we describe Energy Farm, a data center energy manager that exploits load fluctuations to save as much energy as possible while satisfying quality of service requirements. Energy Farm achieves energy savings by aggregating traffic during low load periods and temporary turning off a subset of computing resources. Energy Farm respects the logical and physical dependencies of the interconnected devices in the data center and performs automatic shut down even in emergency cases such as temperature peaks and power leakages. Results show that high resource utilization efficiency is possible in data center infrastructures and that huge savings in terms of energy (MWh), emissions (tons of CO2) and costs (kε) are achievable.

    A realistic energy-oriented model is necessary to formally characterize the energy consumption and the consequent carbon footprint of actual and future high-capacity WDM networks. The energy model describes the energy consumption of the various network elements (NE) and predicts their energy consumption behavior under different traffic loads and for the diverse traffic types, including all optical and electronic traffic, O/E/O conversions, 3R regenerations, add/drop multiplexing, etc. Besides, it has to be scalable and simple to implement, manage and modify according to the new architecture and technologies advancements. In this paper, we discuss the most relevant energy models present in the literature highlighting possible advantages, drawbacks and utilization scenarios in order to provide the research community with an overview over the different energy characterization frameworks that are currently being employed in WDM networks.

    El modelo educativo que propugna la implantación del Espacio Europeo de Enseñanza Superior (EEES) propone desplazar el centro de gravedad del proceso de aprendizaje del profesor al estudiante, haciendo un especial hincapié en el trabajo grupal y colaborativo entre estudiantes y con los profesores. La asignatura IBA/ING (Internet de Banda Ancha/Internet Nueva Generación) de los estudios de Ingeniería de Telecomunicación se imparte como una experiencia de innovación educativa en la docencia realizada entre las Universidades Politécnicas de Cataluña (UPC), Madrid (UPM) y Valencia (UPV) con utilización intensiva de herramientas web 2.0 de colaboración a través de Internet. La metodología docente se basa en una combinación entre el aprendizaje cooperativo sin distancias y la enseñanza expositiva con clases presenciales con alumnos en cada una de las tres universidades que atienden simultáneamente de forma totalmente interactiva al profesor ubicado físicamente en una de las universidades en función del tema.

    New services like Video on demand, Television (IPTV), high speed Internet access and Voice over IP on top the same link are called Triple Play services. These services demand very high bandwidth to customers. ADSL and ADLS2+ aren’t enough for supporting the new bandwidth requirement. One suitable solution for high bandwidth demand with a long reach is to use optical cable to customers (FTTX). Nowadays there are two technologies GPON (Gigabit passive optical network) and EP2P (Ethernet point-to-point) fighting for to be implemented in network access. This paper makes an evaluation between both solutions and it tries to answer the next question: What is the best solution for supporting requirement of Triple Play applications?

    Es presenta un model per compaginar l'activitat docent expositiva i l'aprenentatge cooperatiu utilitzant les eines del campus virtual ATENEA. El mètode docent utilitzat està fonamentat en l'ús de les metodologies educatives grupals seguint el model EEES i realitzant part de les seves activitats fora de les aules de manera virtual i amb això optimitzar l'ús del temps dins de les mateixes. Els resultats obtinguts, en una assignatura tecnològica de segon cicle, indiquen que la metodologia millora els resultats acadèmics i de qualitat, i que millora la responsabilitat i implicació dels alumnes en el seu procés d'aprenentatge.
