    En esta investigación educativa nos hemos centrado en el uso del aprendizaje móvil (ML) en el campo de la arquitectura y la construcción. Se llevó a cabo en distintos niveles de la enseñanza universitaria de grado y de máster, a fin de evaluar la integración de la tecnología de la Realidad Aumentada (RA) en dispositivos móviles. Se han realizado varios estudios de caso, en los que se han abordado diferentes estrategias, que van desde el uso de los códigos QR (quick reference) o marcadores específicos para descargar contenidos multimedia generados por los estudiantes tales como los modelos 3D georeferenciados para ser ajustados y evaluados en el lugar. Por lo tanto, se diseñaron prácticas específicas en el marco de diferentes temas, donde los dos tipos más comunes de registro han sido probados (reconocimiento óptico de imagen y posicionamiento GPS). También se ha abordado la integración de la luz en la escena. Debido al alto costo y a la disponibilidad limitada de estos dispositivos, hemos creado grupos experimentales con pocos alumnos que comparten, si es necesario, los terminales. La mejora del rendimiento académico y la manejabilidad de los sistemas han sido evaluadas en cada caso específico utilizando cuestionarios estandarizados, en comparación con el grupo de estudiantes de control. Los resultados muestran que estos dispositivos se han convertido en una herramienta eficaz, eficiente y satisfactoria para el uso de esta tecnología móvil, la RA en su versión (hand-held) manejable a mano. This educational research focuses on the use of mobile learning (m-learning) in the field of Architecture and Building Construction. It was conducted at various levels of university teaching (bachelor¿s and master¿s degree courses) to assess the integration of augmented reality (AR) technology on mobile devices. Several cases employing different strategies were studied.

    El presente trabajo incluido en un marco de investigación más amplio, tiene como objetivo la implementación de un sistema de navegación georeferenciado y con realidad aumentada sobre plataforma Layar© para dispositivos móviles con propósitos docentes. Dicha aplicación permite la creación de canales de información mediante bases de datos con modelos virtuales y todo tipo de contenido multimedia. La metodología de trabajo es la de un caso de estudio de investigación educativa llevada a cabo con estudiantes de Arquitectura y Planificación Urbana a nivel de máster en una materia centrada en el uso de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación en el Diseño Urbano, usando como tema central los campus universitarios. Denominamos Geo-elearning a nuestra experiencia porque además de usar estrategias propias del E-Learning, incorpora la geo-localización de contenidos, permitiendo, sobre un emplazamiento determinado, su evaluación con propósitos docentes, lo que nos ha permitido demostrar su viabilidad y eficacia educativa. This paper, which is included in a larger research framework, aims to study the implementation of a mobile Geolocation-based Augmented Reality (AR) system on Layar© platform, for educational purposes. This application allows the creation of information channels using databases that store 3D models and all kinds of multimedia content. The working methodology for this educational research was the study case. It was conducted with students of Architecture degree and Urban Planning Masters, and we were focused on the use of ICT in Urban Design, using college campuses as a central theme. The experience was called Geo-learning because, besides the use of E-Learning strategies, it incorporated student¿s 3d content geo-localization. This allowed its assessment on a particular site, and enabled us to demonstrate feasibility and effectiveness of this technology in educational settings.

    In this study, we describe the implementation and evaluation of an experiment with Augmented Reality (AR) technology in the visualization of 3D models and the presentation of architectural projects by students of architecture and building engineering. The proposal is based on the premise that the technology used in AR, such as mobile devices, is familiar to the student. When used in a collaborative manner, the technology is able to achieve a greater level of direct engagement with the proposed content, thereby improving academic outcomes. The objective was to assess the feasibility of using AR on mobile devices in educational environments and to investigate the relationship between the usability of the tool, student participation, and the improvement in academic performance after using AR. The validation was performed through a case study in which students were able to experience a virtual construction process overlapped onto real environments. Results were obtained by students¿ pre-tests and post-tests. In line with our assumptions, the use of mobile devices in the classroom is highly correlated with motivation, and there is a significant correlation with academic achievement. However, the difficulty of using and generating content is a complex factor that suggests difficulty when implementing more complicated models.

    La tesi que es presenta va sorgir a partir d'un treball de modelat de les maquetes originals de la segona versió de les naus, que Gaudí va dissenyar peral Temple de la Sagrada Família i que es varen destruir durant la guerra civil.El model recuperat va revelar unes pautes de generació geomètrica que no encaixaven dins de la historiografía clàssica gaudiniana i la tesi es concentra en establir el paper que desenvolupa aquesta versió dins de l'obra del Temple i de la resta del treball realitzat per l'arquitecte. Per fer-ho recorrem a l'anàlisi des dels següents tres aspectes que, de fet, són els que configuren el cos central d'aquesta tesi : context històric, geomètric i estructural.En la primera part s'analitza el context històric que va influir en l'evolució de l'obra gaudiniana i s'estudia la relació entra la seva obra civil al marge de la Sagrada Família-amb la del Temple, per determinar la influència entre ambdues.En la segona part s'estudia l'evolució de l'obra gaudiniana vista des d'un punt de vista geomètric i s'analitza la transició que sofreix el seu treball, que parteix d'un plantejament eclèctic propi de l'època on està immers el Gaudí de joventut-fins arribar a un estil molt personal, on la geometria passa a ser el principal recurs que ordena la seva darrera arquitectura.En la tercera part la tesi analitza un altre dels pilars fonamentals de l'obra gaudiniana: l'estructura. S'estudia la relació entre els plantejaments teòrics que es van popularitzar durant l'època de formació de Gaudí i que van fer possible la variació de latipología resistent en edificis religiosos de planta basilical. Aquesta part es completa amb l'anàlisi numéric de les principals versions que Gaudí va projectar per al Temple, duta a terme amb l'ajuda d'eines informàtiques però basant-se en els mètodesoriginals que l'arquitecte va emprar, per veure com aquests van influir en la concepció del seu esquelet resistent.Per últim, en les conclusions, es relacionen entre ells els tres aspectes que s'han abordat durant la tesi- històric, geomètric i estructural-i es determina una nova forma d'interpretar l'obra gaudiniana, fixant una continuïtat entre els seus treballs previs i ladarrera solució de les naus del Temple basada en l'ús de la geometria reglada-que fins el moment s'interpretava de forma superficial o fins i tot incorrecta, com si aquesta darrera hagués sorgit del no res.

    This work addresses the implementation of a mobile Augmented Reality (AR) browser on educational environments. We seek to analyze new educational tools and methodologies, non-traditional, to improve students¿ academic performance, commitment and motivation. The basis of our claim lies in the skills improvement that students can achieve thanks to their innate affinity to digital media features of new Smartphones. We worked under the Layar platform for mobile devices to create virtual information channels through a database associated to 3D virtual models and any other type of media content. The teaching experience was carried out with Master Architecture students, and developed in two subjects focused on the use of ICT and Urban Design. We call it Geo-elearning because of the use of new eLearning strategies and methodologies that incorporate geolocation, allowing receiving, sharing, and evaluate own-generated student¿s proposals, on site.

    This chapter discusses the impact of using social media resources and new emerging technologies in teaching and learning processes. The authors of this chapter focus on Spanish architecture-education framework by analyzing three case studies carried out by students finishing architecture and building degrees. Students¿ interaction with this resources is assessed, as well as their derived academic results, and the degree of satisfaction from students and teachers using these resources and technologies. To conduct the study, the authors worked with Web based freeware applications, such as Dropbox, blogging systems, Moodle, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Google Maps. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets PCs, were used to test QR-Codes (Quick Response Codes) and Augmented Reality technology based applications as Junaio and Ar-Media Plugin.

    In order to improve and optimize the acquisition of skills and competencies focused on the knowledge and understanding of three-dimensional space, the present paper proposes a new method of analysis in the incorporation of new visual technologies in the field of education for the degrees of 'Architecture' and 'Building Science and Technology'. The new method of analysis proposed is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques (using Bipolar Laddering - BLA) to assess the use of augmented reality systems applied to university teaching. The novel combination of methods and usability studies is meant to focus on the opinion and perception of the student. With this evaluation, the teacher can modify and improve the methods of deploying technology in the university framework in order to achieve a collaborative environment of success instead of the more traditional lecture environment. The positive results from a first teaching experience where the proposed method has been used, which we present in the current paper, confirm the utility of the method and encourage further replications for standardization. © 2013 AISTI.

    The constant disappearance of hundreds of roshans, the projected wooden windows, in the historical city of Jeddah is now an established fact. Documentation is a major step towards heritage preservation, whether threatened by man-made or natural factors but no architectural database or measurement records exist due to the absence of specialists and experts. Thus, there is an immediate need for training new technicians and architects who could ensure documentation and conservation of remaining heritage. Thus, we propose a combination of new technologies, flexible, high interconnectivity, and high usability data formats to capture, model, and simulate these elements of heritage interest. For this purpose, an academic experiment involving architecture students from Jeddah was designed. The experiment required students to engage with a new integration of ICT-Hybrid technologies that incorporate dynamic and fast processes for 3D documentation and modeling. In this paper, we evaluate the usability of the proposed methodology as well as investigate ideas that may bring us closer to the goal of effective heritage documentation. © 2013 AISTI.

    The Roshan represents one of the most characteristic aspects of traditional architecture in Hejaz (Saudi Arabia) and a frequent feature in most of the Historical Jeddah's heritage buildings. The old city has witnessed continued degradation recently, which has caused the loss its traditional architecture and hundreds of these projected wooden windows. Documentation is a major step towards heritage preservation, whether threatened by man-made or natural factors. However, due to the absence of specialists and experts an architectural database of the Roshans does not exist. Surveying these architectural elements is a very laborious and difficult process when using conventional methodologies including the laser sensors approach mainly due to the onsite limitations. Establishing an architectural database of the Roshans is the main objective in this research paper, based on the continuous development of data capture and modelling methodologies that allows the accurate recording of even the most complex and intricate details and patterns which are typically found in Roshans. Recent advances in image based techniques (digital close-range photogrammetry and computer vision) such as the semi-automated solutions of Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) and 3D modelling software has offered an accurate, inexpensive and practical solution to surveying, documenting and reconstructing these architectural heritage features. In this paper the application of these methods is tested and evaluated on the Roshans in the old city of Jeddah.

    In this paper we describe the implementation and evaluation of an augmented reality (AR) application, on mobile devices. It¿s based on optical images recognition from real environment, and it has been particularly intended to be used in educational environments. Some improvements have been implemented compared to existing commercial ones, such as the ability to compare and move different models consecutively with a single marker. The objective was to assess the feasibility of using AR on mobile devices in educational environments. In addition we evaluated academic performance improvement using this technology. Validation was done through a case of study where students were able to see a virtual construction process overlapped to real environments. It was carried out by Building Engineering students of the EPSEB (UPC-Barcelona-Tech). Results obtained by student¿s PRE and POST test, and by questionnaires responses, demonstrated the application suitability as a new tool to be used in learning processes.

    A mixed-methods study evaluating the motivation and satisfaction of Architecture degree students using interactive visualization methods is presented in this paper. New technology implementations in the teaching field have been largely extended and developed; however, these innovations require approval validation and evaluation by the final users, in our case the students. In this paper, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of applying mixed evaluation technology in a case study centered in the use of interactive and collaborative tools for the visualization of 3D architectonical models, the evaluation of the motivation and the students' degree of satisfaction using friendly technology as mobile phones and Augmented Reality.

    In this paper we present ¿ML-AR¿ Practice Modules, in the field of Architecture and Building Engineering. They are alternative to traditional courses which are taught over a semester, and adapted to the student learning flow. In this case we used a particular technology such as Hand Held Augmented Reality (HHAR), to overlap virtual models on real scenes. Experience was limited to specific groups within four areas of undergraduate and master. In each case, specific Mobile Learning (ML) practices have been carried out. Each experimental group (EG) has been able to visualize a virtual model created by them or their teachers, in order to evaluate an architectural proposal or a construction detail, on site, as part of their own learning process. Students without the required devices, still in the ordinary course, configured the control group, (CG). Virtual models generation and augmented scenes preview on site, provided evaluation tools for better assessment and knowledge of student¿s proposals prior to any intervention. In addition, tangible interaction and the abilitiy to modify and share their views also provided social skills and helped to create a self-formative process. Mobile devices and AR technology were used close to the students who show greater motivation and commitment in their didactic contents generation. Evaluation is based on academic performance improvement through study cases, by comparing the achievement of the overall objectives between the two groups (EG & GC). Relationship between performance and usability is also assessed. The experiments carried out confirmed our initial hypothesis, where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) used in the web 3.0 environments, allow improving learning processes and reducing its temporality without previous experience at a very low cost. AR Technology in this area combined with Cloud computing development, creates a new paradigm of continuous training and self-learning though the use of AR technology.

    En la educación universitaria en general y especialmente la relacionada con la arquitectura, el uso de imágenes digitales está generalizado. No obstante, dicho uso dista de estar optimizado ya que tanto alumnos como profesores ignoran sistemáticamente conceptos clave como las características del medio de visualizado o el usuario final. La tendencia general es la creación de imágenes con elevadas resoluciones, aspecto que conlleva ficheros de elevado tamaño que generan elevados tiempos de carga, edición o transmisión. El presente trabajo analiza cómo afecta el nivel de calidad percibida de la imagen en función de las características de esta y del dispositivo en el que se visualiza, y su relación con la respuesta emocional del usuario. La novedad de la metodología empírica empleada radica en la evaluación de usuarios en el ámbito universitario con técnicas propias de la sociología y la psicología, desde un enfoque propio de los estudios de comunicación audiovisual.

    The goal of this report is to address the implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) technology in a teaching context using mobile devices. The specific contents and evaluation methodologies have been developed in the field of building engineering, where this technology offers potential advantages in the training processes. The objective was to evaluate the system usability and measure academic performance improvement by using Hand-Held AR (HHAR) in educational environments. This method was validated through a case study where students were able to see a virtual construction process overlapped onto a real environment. The results obtained from the students¿ PRE and POST tests as well as questionnaire responses show high qualification levels in effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. In addition, a significant improvement was found in the overall performance of the students of the experimental group.

    Aquesta tesi tracta de les possibles aplicacions que puguin tenir els sistemes de simulació física en el camp de l'arquitectura. Aquests mecanismes s'han fet servir profusament en la informàtica ja sigui per a generar animacions, per a càlcul estructural, per investigació etc. Però només recentment s'ha plantejat la possibilitat de fer-les servir com una eina de modelat per als programes de CAD. En aquest sentit la tesi tracta aquesta possibilitat de manera extensa investigant la viabilitat de la idea des de diferents punts de vista i buscant aplicacions per a la mateixa. Es fa una breu exploració dels diferents tipus de models de simulacions físiques. A partir d'aquest estudi i basant-se en els plantejaments teòrics es va generar un software destinat a comprovar tots els aspectes que es van esmentant. El fet de generar un programa va resultar de molta utilitat a l'hora de verificar les idees i estructurar-les correctament. Amb aquest programa es van poder generar models de tota mena, des de arcs funiculars fins a sistemes de malles de pannells que més endavant van poder-se exportar a altres plataformes de CAD amb les que estudiar els resultats. Les simulacions es basen en les formules de Newton aplicades sobre un model de partícules en el que es tenen en compte forces que fan que interactuïn entre elles. A partir d'aquestes interaccions es defineixen o s'optimitzen models tridimensionals conferint-los una sèrie de propietats que s'analitzen mes endavant. Per altra banda les transformacions que pateix aquest model poden ser controlades des de menús de manera que modificant un paràmetre el model es modifiqui automàticament sense la intervenció directa de l'usuari. A nivell de càlcul el programa fa servir sistemes iteratius per a generar transformacions en un model. Seria doncs un procés equivalent a generar una maqueta física del nostre projecte però en el que a més podem controlar la física del model de manera que les possibilitats d'ús siguin més amplies. Es troben doncs tres possibles camps en els que la tesi pot tenir aplicació directa que seria per a processos generatius en arquitectura, per a pannel•lització i per a generar sistemes tènsils. També apareixen altres possibles aplicacions secundaries per a facilitar la modificació d'estructures complexes o simular el control paramètric d'elements arquitectònics. A més de tot això també sorgeixen aspectes inesperats que durant la tesi no s'havien tingut en compte i que al crear un programa s'han pogut apreciar, com certs processos subliminals d'ajust de la forma que tenen lloc en un segon terme o similituds amb certs elements i processos naturals. Així doncs es presenta un anàlisi complet del que significarien els sistemes dinàmics un cop fossin aplicats a l'arquitectura tenint en compte la seva possible repercussió en el disseny. Un aspecte rellevant de la tesi es la relació que s'estableix entre les funcions dinàmiques i la geometria ja que es pretén que els sistemes de forces serveixin, entre altres coses, d'eina de resolució geomètrica. Estudiant els casos en que es poden aplicar i les característiques geomètriques que confereixen als models es pot establir quins possibles usos generals poden tenir en els projectes. Tot això s'emmarca en un context en el que les eines digitals estan en un clar procés de creixement i en el que hi ha una tendència creixent variar la relació amb l'usuari i la manera de com es controlen els processos interns, avançant cada cop més cap a sistemes visuals de programació i cap a un ús més complet de la capacitat de computació que actualment es fa servir només de forma puntual.

    This Thesis analyzes the role of physics based algorithms in architectural applications as a generative tool and problem solver mechanism. While physics simulations in digital media had been used for animations, structural calculations or scientific research, there is a lack of studies about the possible uses that it poses for CAD programs. This Thesis tries to fill this gap studying possible applications of this mechanism, from different view points, and trying to extract global rules for their use. In the Thesis we could find an exploration of different methods used in physics simulations, based on this study and some theoretical ideas a software was developed allowing me to test all the theoretical concepts previously exposed. The development of this software was essential to verify that the exposed ideas were correct and also helped to reshape the theoretical structure. All sort of models, ranging from funicular arches to panel meshes were generated using this software and were exported to other platforms to study the results. Physics simulations are based on Newton's formulas applied on particle systems that interact using force fields. These interactions give rise to new 3d shapes and multiple optimization processes that are studied in the thesis. On the other hand the software also allows the user to control the transformations of the model using a parametric tool. The program uses iterative algorithms to modify the model because it is a robust and simple method that could be tested on any computer. The final process is similar to a real physical model of our project but giving the opportunity to control the physics that rule our model allowing more uses than a conventional physical model. There are three areas in which physics based methods could be applied: Generative methods, panelization and tensile structures. There are also other less defined applications as control methods for complex structures and parametric-like control methods of conventional models. Moreover unexpected phenomena takes place in the research process like subliminal long term optimization or natural-like processes. And important issue in this study is the relation between geometry and force fields because there is an interest in solve geometrical problems using forces. Studying the geometric properties that this method gives to the model we can point out which kind of uses is could have. It is also important to look for similarities between geometric shapes and forces to associate both in concepts that could be easily understand by users. This study takes place in a moment when digital tools are growing and the relationship between users and machines is changing continuously in the direction of visual programming. So this study is also trying to make a closer relationship between advanced digital methods and architectural needs to update the current practice. Barcelona

    This thesis aims to address the implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) technology in a teaching context by using mobile devices (hand held).Laptops , tablets and mobile devices were used with the two most common operating systems (IOS and Android). Specifics contents and evaluation methodologies have been developed in the field of architecture and building engineering, where this technology which is relatively recent, and mainly based on overlapping information to an object or a real environment, offers potential advantages in the training processes of future professionals in this field. With this purpose, the following issues have been addressed: . Those theoretical foundations considered relevant for the understanding and operation of the technology. . The introduction of new teaching methods through mobile devices , based on AR technology in educational contexts. Involving students in the creation of virtual content using various existing Augmented Reality applications and an application own developed. . The evaluation of the degree of satisfaction, efficiency and effectiveness of the courses. All these concepts linked to usability. . The improvement of students' academic performance. The essay has been structured in two blocks: The first one starts by specifying the pedagogical and educational foundation that has motivated this thesis. lt then goes on to describe the methodology used in the evaluation of the courses. And finally, still in this block, a general framework of technology is established. It explores various theoretical keys that have been considered relevant, ranging from the definition of the AR concept to the current state of systems and software used in various fields . The second block, which constitutes the practical part of this thesis, addresses the implementation of AR technology in learning environments through different case studies. To this end the two most common systems in mobile devices have been used: Optical recognition and GPS based. In regard to the evaluation of the technology there are two consecutive lines: Systems usability assessment, according to ISO 9241 -11 . Thus, from the responses to 127 specific questionnaires, indicators are constructed using multivariate analysis techniques, which illustrate the situation of each student by comparison with the rest. It allowed a useful approach to the study and it helped to obtain more objective conclusions. For the evaluation of academic performance, held in the last two courses , students were divided into experimental and control groups. Assessment was carried out from PRE-TEST and POST-TEST scores. In total, 171 students (55 from the two experimental groups) were evaluated. Due to the reduced samples a statistical procedure was used based on the Sludent's t distribution. Through the p value (statistical significance) returned , we established the likelihood of group's scores being coincident or not before and after workouts. The teaching experiences described and the results extracted from the questionnaires allowed to verify the feasibility of using this technology in the fields mentioned. Either as an alternative tool or complementary to traditional methodologies, and where students get ¡nvolved and participate dynamically in their own learning process. In addition, results reflect a significant improvement in the overall performance of students from experimental courses compared to students from the control groups, who did not use the technology. Finally, this paper puts forward the development of future work, such as future improvements of the application developed and the use of this technology aimed at the rehabilitation and maintenance of buildings.

    In this paper we present the first conclusions of an educational research project which seeks to evaluate graphic and spatial capabilities improvement of undergraduate and master's degree in architecture, construction, urbanism and design students, throughout their academic training period, and by the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The whole project consists of twelve case studies to be carried out in several university centers. At this moment, after the two finished case studies, it has been demonstrated that by combining the use of an attractive technology, to create dynamic photomontage for visual evaluation of virtual models in a real environment, and by the user-machine interaction that involves the AR, students feel more motivated, development and evolution of graphic competences and space skills are increased in shorter learning periods, and their academic performance is highly improved. We have used for this experience mobile phones, laptops, as well as low cost AR applications.

    Incorporation of new technologies in university studies is a consummate factor. However, it is necessary to evaluate the degree of satisfaction, need and interest that the use of these technologies can provide both in the training of the student and their perception regarding the use of the technology. In this paper, we present a new proposal for evaluating the implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) in the architecture degree based on an accurate review of the state of the art regarding educational evaluations and their statistical analyses. The main objective of this paper was to design a test model that reflects the student profiles and their satisfaction and adaptation degree with the specific technology used in different educational frameworks.

    One of the weaknesses in augmented reality (AR) scenes is that, most of the times, the virtual model lacks realism and is not integrated sufficiently into the scene to be credible. The problem lies in lighting conditions differences from real environment and virtual objects superimposed. This problem takes on special significance indoors, to visualize interior design proposals, because a non-integrated scene may seem unlikely and unattractive. In this paper, we describe a teaching experience conducted in the framework of an interior design specialization course. It was carried out by students from the School of Building Construction of Barcelona in November 2011, at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Students were required to use AR freeware tools for modeling and visualize their own proposals indoor. The challenging task was to make virtual objects blend harmoniously into the real scene, so they should appear as if they were like real. New modeling techniques have been experienced in order to add lighting conditions maps to virtual objects. We used for that radiance and global illumination simulations from the real environment to get real scene lighting information. Experience was useful to determine the consistency of illumination between the virtual objects and the surrounding real objects in the scene, as well as, to evaluate the importance of the use of this technology in interior design proposals and architectural visualization.

    Migration to new visualization techniques is a trend that allows for a better spatial understanding. In order to evaluate the resilience ability of first-year students of Spanish architecture degree, we have compared two learning methodologies: the traditional generation of printed plans, and the generation of interactive 3D models using new systems of publication and interaction. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the new methodology that assumes that the use of friendly technology in the classroom makes it much easier and satisfying for students to follow the subjects, allowing better acquisition of the skills they are learning.

    The participation of the audience in tv quiz shows has traditionally two types of profiles: the contestant and the home viewer. This project has the goal of define the creation a new user profile: the remote contestant, the participant who would interact with a live TV show from different devices as a player. The main factors that would affect the user in case of developing this kind of product concept have been obtained applying user experience exploration techniques centered on users needs and desires. Using a qualitative strategic design method has been possible to achieve well-defined and subtle information regarding the motivations and the desirable game mechanics for this future user profile. Tis study shows the requirement achieving and the prototype evaluation created from the needs and motivations detected from potential users. This paper will present the findings and main conclusions of the study as the experience of the users testing this new model of interaction for TV quiz shows.

    Se presenta un artículo fruto de un proyecto de investigación educativa realizado en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) durante el curso 2010-2011 y 2011-2012. El proyecto se basa en un estudio de caso centrado en la secuencia académica del primer año de los estudios de grado, iniciada por el Curso de Acogida (curso inicial de informática gráfica) y que finaliza con el curso de Dibujo II (curso equivalente a la introducción en Geometría Descriptiva). Con él se propone usar una estrategia pedagógica inversa a la habitual, es decir, que los futuros estudiantes de arquitectura empiecen usando herramientas TIC y tecnologías 3D en lugar del dibujo tradicional. Dado el interés que las mismas despiertan en ellos y por su facilidad de alfabetización digital, los alumnos obtienen resultados sobre su formación gráfica, educación visual, comprensión espacial, rendimiento académico y satisfacción muy superiores a los habituales, a la vez que en periodos de aprendizaje más cortos.

    El objetivo principal es evaluar como las nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación se incorporan en los procesos educativos, añadiendo motivación, agilidad y movilidad. Primero en un estudio de viabilidad en una materia de Arquitectura, donde se han definido las metodologías y recursos necesarios, para luego en un estudio de caso con estudiantes de Ingeniería de la Edificación de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, ensayar la mejora del rendimiento académico y las competencias informáticas en un entorno urbano usando el modelado virtual, la realidad aumentada y el mobile learning. En este segundo ensayo se ha definido un grupo experimental de estudiantes y los parámetros a evaluar por medio de cuestionarios, tales como el grado de satisfacción y la facilidad de uso de la tecnología empleada. Las conclusiones demuestran que estas tecnologías, con una tasa de usabilidad muy alta, incrementan el rendimiento académico, la rapidez y agilidad en la adquisición de conocimiento y amplían las competencias gráficas. Our primary goal is to evaluate how the new Information Technology and Communication are incorporated into the educational processes, adding motivation, flexibility and mobility. We've first carried out an architectural feasibility study, where we have defined methodologies and resources, and then we've performed a case of study with students from Building Engineering of the Barcelona Tech University, where we've tested the academic performance and computer competences improvement in an urban environment. We've used for that virtual modeling, augmented reality and mobile learning technologies. In this second case, we have defined an experimental group of students and the parameters to be evaluated. Questionnaires were used to assess the degree of satisfaction and the ease of use of the technology. Our findings show that these technology, with a high usability rate, increase academic performance, and the speed and agility in the acquisition of knowledge, expanding student's graphical skills.

    Presentamos una investigación original que ha reconstruido por primera vez con medios digitales el templo desaparecido de San Jacinto en Caracas, (1595-1821), ejemplo cumbre de arquitectura religiosa venezolana y de la relación entre Canarias y Venezuela, destacando en él su cubierta de madera mudéjar, tecnología que perduró hasta el siglo XIX en contraposición al resto de Iberoamérica, usando para ello diversas tecnologías multimedia. En base a fuentes bibliográficas, excavaciones arqueológicas, planimetría urbanística, pinturas, fotografías de los templos y retablos contemporáneos y aplicando nuestra experiencia en la restauración de este patrimonio religioso, hemos definido un modelo tipológico y generado una metodología de bajo coste, aplicable a la docencia para la toma de datos, la simulación visual y difusión por medios informáticos. Estas estrategias propias de las TICs, atractivas para nuestros estudiantes y aplicadas por ellos a otros templos desaparecidos, posibilitará que aprendan a comprender, reconstruir y a valorar esta arquitectura.

    The visualization of an architectural project has always been associated with physical models, two-dimensional impressions, and panels and in recent years, on computer screens visualization, usually with a high resolution or large in size. However, technological developments have produced new devices, such as handheld PCs, pocket PCs, and Smartphones that have increasingly larger screens and sophisticated technical characteristics. The emergence of these devices has created a new workflow that enables on-site management and decision making through the viewing of information on those devices. In this paper, we will study the basic features of the architectural image to provide a better user experience for browsing these types of images on mobile devices¿ limited and heterogeneous screen sizes by comparing the results with traditional and immersive environments.

    El objetivo de este artículo es implementar una metodología para la recuperación del patrimonio arquitectónico religioso de Venezuela, ejemplificada en un estudio de caso: la reconstrucción virtual de la iglesia dominica de San Jacinto, localizada en el cuadrilátero histórico de Caracas. La metodología de trabajo consta de cuatro etapas: dos investigativas (histórica y arqueológica), una etapa gráfica y una divulgativa con el uso de los códigos QR, para su consulta sobre el lugar mediante teléfonos móviles. Como hipótesis de partida se plantea que, dada la poca documentación existente, es preciso complementar el estudio y el levantamiento de iglesias canarias y venezolanas con sus retablos estrechamente ligados y, basado en ello, tipificar y reproducir virtualmente el modelo de iglesia colonial venezolana, en aras de acercar su conocimiento a la población y contribuir en el trabajo de la comunidad científica.

    Esta tesis investiga sobre el proceso de transformación de la forma arquitectónica, analizando una técnica específica denominada morphing. La técnica del morphing se utiliza en los gráficos por ordenador para la transformación de la forma entre dos o más objetos dados. Desde un punto de vista técnico, se revisan y actualizan las metodologías y aplicaciones existentes, sus características específicas y sus incidencias sobre la arquitectura. Desde un punto de vista práctico, se utilizan una serie de modelos de las casas Usonianas de Frank Lloyd Wright, con el fin de experimentar la técnica y ver qué utilidades se pueden obtener a partir de su lógica de diseño. Como resultado de este análisis se obtiene una metodología genérica para el procedimiento de un morphing arquitectónico.

    This thesis investigates the transformation of architectural form, analyzing a specific technique called morphing. Morphing is a technique used in computer graphics to transform a form between two or more given objects. From a technical point of view, the existing techniques are reviewed and updated, as well as their specific characteristics and impact on architecture. From a practical point of view, some models of Usonian houses of Frank Lloyd Wright are used to experience the technique and see which utilities are available from his design logic. As a result of this analysis a generic methodology for the process of architectural morphing is obtained.

    The visualization of architectural design has always been associated with physical models, exhibition panels and displays on computer screens, usually in a large format. However, technological developments in the past decades have produced new devices such as handheld PCs, pocket PCs, and Smartphones that have increasingly larger screens and more sophisticated technical characteristics. The emergence of these devices has made both the non expert and advanced user a consumer of such devices. This evolution has created a new workflow that enables on-site management and decision making through the viewing of information on those devices. In this paper, we will study the basic features of the architectural image to provide a better user experience for browsing these types of images on mobile devices¿ limited and heterogeneous screen sizes by comparing the results with traditional and immersive environments.

    We present this paper as the result of an educational research project at the School of Architecture of Barcelona, in which we demonstrate, by means of a study case focused on the Host Course, HC, that using a reverse strategy, opposed to the traditional pedagogical strategy, in which future architecture students start to use first ICT tools and 3D technologies instead of the traditional drawing, their graphic training, visual education, understanding of the space, academic performance and satisfaction as users of computer applications, are superior, with shorter periods for learning.

    The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of digital modeling as dentification instrument of a formal grammar. The identification is developed through the analysis of some furniture, in which it is used a formal grammar identification as a means to find out and generate a project language. This language construction is based on the grammar that generates forms which correspond to the same language, through the recursive application of a set of rules. Thus, the paper tries to identify a specific grammar for the furniture through its digital modeling.

    The development of technology has always influenced the visualization experience. Both static and mobile devices are a general tendency to maximize the size and screen resolution in line with the intrinsic ability of technology to generate high-resolution images and create an immersive scene. Problems arises when the size or screen resolution is reduced or the amount of information to show increases. The architecture framework is a clear example where the visualization and evaluation of the information is more critical. In this paper we performed a user study' focused on evaluating the features of the digital images related with architectural framework viewed on mobile screen in order to improve the adaptation of different type of images to different type of users.

    La metodología propuesta en esta investigación educativa es la de estudio de casos, desarrollada en cuatro grupos de alumnos de diferentes países, los cuales han debido abordar proyectos similares usando herramientas de diseño asistido en combinación con las técnicas tradicionales de realización de maquetas. De la evaluación de los resultados, se deducen: la facilidad y adaptabilidad de esta metodología a todos los alumnos y países, ya sean nativos digitales o no; las virtudes de integración del medio digital y prototipos rápidos de papel que evitan la linealidad inducida por los procesos exclusivamente digitales y la incorporación de nuevos modos de abordaje para la generación y control geométrico de formas y espacios complejos.

    In this paper we present the first conclusions of an educational research project which seeks to evaluate, throughout the academic training period, and by the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology, the graphic and spatial capabilities of undergraduate and master¿s degree in architecture, construction, urbanism and design students. The project consists of twelve case studies to be carried out in several university centers. Currently, after the first case study has been finalised, it has been demonstrated that by combining the use of an attractive technology, to create dynamic photomontage for visual evaluation of virtual models in a real environment, and by the user-machine interaction that involves AR, students feel more motivated and the development and evolution of their graphic competences and space skills increased in shorter learning periods, improving their academic performance. For this experiment we have used mobile phones, laptops, as well as low cost AR applications.

    La arquitectura colonial venezolana y su patrimonio religioso, concebido de las necesidades y posibilidades y en el cual se desarrollaba un fenómeno re-interpretativo de las diferentes tendencias que sucedían en el resto de América, corre peligro de extinción. Nuestro objetivo es, a través de esta tesis, implementar una metodología para su valoración, recuperación y restauración, a través del conocimiento de su marco histórico y de las influencias recibidas, de un estudio previo de seis iglesias canarias y venezolanas y del desarrollo de nuestro caso de estudio con la Reconstrucción Virtual de la Iglesia de San Jacinto de la Orden de los Dominicos en el cuadrilátero histórico de la ciudad de Caracas. Las hipótesis de partida y la metodología se caracterizan por el análisis directo con el edificio y el espacio eclesiástico a la vez que intentan compensar la falta de documentación bibliografía de estos edificios. Las hipótesis fueron formuladas desde una manera de hacer común específica de Venezuela, y continuando con la línea de investigación de Graziano Gasparini para proteger y documentar el patrimonio religioso. La metodología consta de cuatro etapas: La primera es de aproximación al lugar de trabajo con un marco teórico, seguido de un levantamiento a partir de datos fotográficos y métricos de los retablos, plantas y secciones de seis iglesias canarias y venezolanas usadas como marco de referencia, para obtener de este análisis los patrones formales y el modelo definitivo de iglesia colonial utilizado en Venezuela, dando por válidos los vínculos documentados entre ambos tipos de edificios. La tercera etapa fue la del conocimiento a través de la documentación bibliográfica: arqueológica, histórica y urbanística de nuestro caso de estudio donde se situaba la iglesia de San Jacinto y del propio templo en sí. La cuarta fase fue la de modelización virtual, en base a todo ello pudimos conformar la maqueta 3D para la reconstrucción de la iglesia. Además hemos introducido en esta metodología una quinta fase de carácter divulgativo del material producido utilizando para ello la tecnología de los códigos QR que permiten acceder a contenidos multimedia desde teléfonos móviles con conexión a Internet. A través de ello se ha tipificado el modelo de iglesia colonial venezolana; una iglesia que tiene una planta basilical de tres naves, a diferentes alturas separadas por seis pilares/pilastras, más gruesas que en Canarias, de orden toscano, que soportan arcos de medio punto y arcos torales. La techumbre, a una sola agua en las naves laterales, a dos aguas en la nave central y a cuatro en la capilla mayor; todas ellas construidas a base de pares y nudillos de estilo mudéjar

    Venezuelan colonial architecture and its religious heritage, conceived from the needs and possibilities in which a re-interpretative phenomenon was developing from different trends occurring in the rest of America is in danger of extinction. Our goal, through this thesis is to implement a methodology for assessment, recovery and restoration, through the knowledge of their historical context and the influences of a previous study of six churches in the Canary Islands and Venezuela and the development of our case study with the virtual reconstruction of the Church of San Jacinto in the Dominican Order in the ring of the historic city of Caracas. The assumptions and methodology are characterized by direct analysis of the ecclesiastic building and space while trying to compensate for the lack of bibliographic documentation of these buildings. The hypotheses were formulated from a Venezuelan point of view, and continuing with Graziano Gasparini’s research to protect and document the religious heritage. The methodology consists of four stages: The first is to approach the workplace with a theoretical framework, followed by a collection of photographic and metrics data of the altarpieces, plants and sections of six Canary and Venezuelan churches, in order to obtain from this analysis the formal patterns and the final model used in Venezuela colonial church, assuming all documented links between the two types of buildings are valid. The third stage was the knowledge acquired through the bibliographic, archaeological, historical and urban documentation of our case study where stood the church of San Jacinto and the very temple itself. The fourth phase was the virtual modeling. Based on the information collected, we were able to develop a 3D model of the reconstruction of the church. We have also introduced in this methodology a fifth phase of an informative nature of the material produced using the QR codes technology that allow access to multimedia content from mobile phones with internet connection. Through this, we have defined the model of Venezuelan colonial church. A church with a basilica plan with three naves, located at different heights and separated by six columns / pilasters, thicker than in the Canary Islands, from Tuscan order, supporting arches and half point arches. The roof, single water in the aisles, two waters in the central nave and four in the main chapel, all built from pair and knuckles Mudejar style.
