    The thesis focuses on the columns in Mies, as architectural element through which we can explain all his work. The development of a chronological table that organizes the work of Mies according to the shape of the column reveals us the existence of three distinct periods, each of which corresponds to the development of a different column. FIRST PERIOD: This period corresponds to the study of the star column of small riveting profiles, where a parallelism between the work of Mies, the Alfred Grenander¿s, architect of Siemens, and Peter Behrens¿, architect of AEG, is set up. Mies builds the same construction system of small riveting profiles published in different manuals of that time, adding small construction variations to achieve his architectural concerns. For example, he proposes an alternative to the usual gusset plates to solve the joints between the column and the beam, reducing them to a point therefore getting the absolutely flat roof of the German Pavilion. SECOND PERIOD: This period corresponds to the study of the grey column, which Mies uses at the United States, where he met the architecture of great welded steel  profiles used by Albert Kahn, the Henry Ford's architect. The application of the assembly line in manufacturing automobiles requires Kahn and Ford to innovate in the structures of large size and to spread the same structural order in all the buildings of the same industrial complex. The first buildings of Mies at the IIT are almost identical to those of Albert Kahn, with small variations, starting  a process that will end with the Crown Hall. THIRD PERIOD: This period corresponds to the study of the star column built with double-T profiles and the incorporation of the waffle slab structure in the work of Mies, which he develops from its relationship with Konrad Wachsmann, professor at IIT and architect of the US Air Force. Wachsmann develops three-dimensional structures in order to build large hangars for aircrafts, which can be assembled and disassembled by unskilled people in a very short time. Moreover, they don't generate any waste material. Mies will simplify constructively this structure, finally reaching the National Gallery. CONCLUSIONS. THE EFFECTS OF SCALE IN ARCHITECTURE: An overview of the technological context allows us to explore the link between Mies and those architects who lead the construction with steel structure in different industries and who are linked to the research and technological development institutions as relevant as the Werkbund, the Bauhaus and the IIT, in which Mies has taken a leading role in places of highest responsibility. The reconstruction of this technological context throughout the three periods allows us to draw a path of the development of the steel structures, which increasingly takes on new challenges of scale. Furthermore, shows us how Mies incorporates these advances in their work, and applies them to all scales in all three pillars. ARCHITECTURAL MANIFESTO: The comparative study of transitional projects reveals how Mies proposes some collage in every one of the three periods, as an architectural manifesto, which links the concept of neo-plastic space with every new structure. This is an invariant aspect in his work from the concrete house project in 1923 and the brick house project in 1924. TOWARDS THE CLARIFICATION OF THE STRUCTURE: The comparative study of the column allows us to realize its capacity to express the structure. The step from a column to another is part of a process in the work of Mies to the clarification of the structure. Thus it is becoming cleaner and he can leave it more and more visible. It is a constructive refinement process, and it is part of the same work line initiated by Viollet-le-Duc on the constructive shape that best expresses the steel structure, the one which responds to the material logic and the constrution processes.

    Arquitectura y estructura han ido siempre íntimamente ligadas, pero con la aparición del acero y el hormigón surgieron nuevas necesidades formales o estéticas. El Estilo Internacional se inclinó por separar la retícula estructural de los cerramientos. En cambio, la Escuela de Chicago forjó las bases de una arquitectura optimizada y racional. Frank Lloyd Wright, entre estas dos situaciones, optó por seguir las pautas naturales de los materiales, de forma “orgánica”, recuperando la integración entre los diferentes componentes de la arquitectura. Dentro del recorrido sobre el papel de la estructura en la historia de la arquitectura, parece apropiado detener el análisis en la obra de Frank Lloyd Wright y su particular utilización de la estructura. El Guggenheim Museum es el edificio que recoge muchas de las constantes, por lo que merece la pena estudiarlo analizándolo a través de su estructura. En este sentido, la figura de Jaroslav J. Polivka resulta de particular interés debido a la colaboración mantenida con Wright. De esta relación surgen en ocasiones las claves, no sólo de las soluciones concretas de la estructura, sino de los condicionantes finales dentro del conjunto arquitectónico

    Architecture and structure have always been closely related, but the advent of the steel and reinforced concrete created new needs in the formal aspects. The International Style opted to separate the structural framework from the walls. On the other hand, the Chicago School forged the basis of a rational and optimized architecture. Between these two situations, Frank Lloyd Wright chose the approach of following the natural patterns of materials, in ¿organic¿ manner, recovering the interaction between the different elements of the architecture. Into the range about the role of the structure in the history of architecture, it seems appropriate to stop the analysis in the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and his particular use of structure. The Guggenheim Museum is the building that reflects many of the constants, so it is worth analyzing its structure. In this sense, the figure of Jaroslav J. Polivka has a particular interest because of his collaboration with Wright. From this relationship sometimes arise the keys, not just the specific solutions for the structure, but the final conditions within the architectural form.     En 1879 nace Eugène Freyssinet, padre reconocido del hormigón pretensado. Cuarenta años antes de su nacimiento, ingenieros americanos ya habían empezado a pretensar perfiles de hierro fundido, para evitar que cuando éstos entrasen en tracción, se quebraran. Ciento setenta años después el hormigón armado pretensado se estudia en centenares de artículos, revistas especializadas y tesis doctorales diversas, mientras que el acero pretensado no ha tenido el mismo desarrollo desde unos cincuenta años atrás. Raras son las ocasiones dónde se llega a justificar que pretensar una estructura metálica es necesario y razonable económicamente. Si nos centramos en estructuras de edificación, aún serán menos estas ocasiones. La presente tesis estudia la historia de las estructuras metálicas pretensadas, la mayoría de edificación, algunas de ellas a fondo, como las recientemente construidas en Catalunya. También se repasan las posibilidades que el pretensado metálico ofrece al consultor de estructuras, completándolo con algunos ejemplos. Se ofrece un análisis pormenorizado de la viga Fink, con especial cuidado en su predimensionado y en el cálculo tanto manual, como matricial. Se incluye un análisis de refuerzo de techos formados por viguetas reforzadas trasnversalmente por una viga que cambia su rigidez según criterio del proyectista. Al final se desarrolla una solución de unión de viga y pilar metálico unidos mediante tendones pretensados, para facilitar el montaje en obra, resolviendo las holguras gracias a la unión mediante nudos semirrígidos.

    Eugène Freyssinet, born in 1879, is the acknowledged father of prestressed concrete. Forty years before his birth, American Engineers had begun to prestress cast iron profiles to prevent them from breaking after entering in tension. One hundred and seventy years after prestressed concrete is studied in hundreds of articles, journals and diverse dissertations, while prestressing of steel has not had the same development since about fifty years ago. Rare are the occasions where the technician is able to justify that prestressing steel structures is necessary and economically reasonable. If we are considering building structures, these occasions to presstress the structure will be even less. This thesis studies the history of prestressed steel structures, some of them in depth, as some of thoses recently built in Catalonia. It also reviews the possibilities that metallic prestressed structures offer to the consultant, including some examples. It provides a detailed analysis of the Fink truss beam, with special care in their pre-dimensioning and calculation both manually as matrix. It includes an analysis of strengthening reinforced slabs, with a beam that changes its stiffness at the discretion of the designer. Eventually it develops a joint solution of a beam and a steel column, connected by prestressed tendons, to make assembly easier, meeting the gaps with the connection by means of semi-rigid joints.
