    The first two decades of the 20th century witnessed the introduction and expansion of reinforced concrete as a building material in Spain. Few years passed between the introduction of the first patents in the most industrialized areas of the Iberian Peninsula and the subsequent generalization of the technique through scientific knowledge obtained in universities. This period coincides almost completely with the professional career of Antoni Gaudí, one of the most famous Catalan architects. This study reports that Gaudí had contact with this new material and discusses the transition he made from the traditional construction methods to the use of reinforced concrete in his later works. Placing the starting point in the relationship between Antonio Gaudí and the industrialists who built the first cement factories in Catalonia (especially Eusebi Güell), the research on the patents to which he had access are presented and the characteristics of his works with reinforced structures and materials are described.

    En 1879 nace Eugène Freyssinet, padre reconocido del hormigón pretensado. Cuarenta años antes de su nacimiento, ingenieros americanos ya habían empezado a pretensar perfiles de hierro fundido, para evitar que cuando éstos entrasen en tracción, se quebraran. Ciento setenta años después el hormigón armado pretensado se estudia en centenares de artículos, revistas especializadas y tesis doctorales diversas, mientras que el acero pretensado no ha tenido el mismo desarrollo desde unos cincuenta años atrás. Raras son las ocasiones dónde se llega a justificar que pretensar una estructura metálica es necesario y razonable económicamente. Si nos centramos en estructuras de edificación, aún serán menos estas ocasiones. La presente tesis estudia la historia de las estructuras metálicas pretensadas, la mayoría de edificación, algunas de ellas a fondo, como las recientemente construidas en Catalunya. También se repasan las posibilidades que el pretensado metálico ofrece al consultor de estructuras, completándolo con algunos ejemplos. Se ofrece un análisis pormenorizado de la viga Fink, con especial cuidado en su predimensionado y en el cálculo tanto manual, como matricial. Se incluye un análisis de refuerzo de techos formados por viguetas reforzadas trasnversalmente por una viga que cambia su rigidez según criterio del proyectista. Al final se desarrolla una solución de unión de viga y pilar metálico unidos mediante tendones pretensados, para facilitar el montaje en obra, resolviendo las holguras gracias a la unión mediante nudos semirrígidos.

    Eugène Freyssinet, born in 1879, is the acknowledged father of prestressed concrete. Forty years before his birth, American Engineers had begun to prestress cast iron profiles to prevent them from breaking after entering in tension. One hundred and seventy years after prestressed concrete is studied in hundreds of articles, journals and diverse dissertations, while prestressing of steel has not had the same development since about fifty years ago. Rare are the occasions where the technician is able to justify that prestressing steel structures is necessary and economically reasonable. If we are considering building structures, these occasions to presstress the structure will be even less. This thesis studies the history of prestressed steel structures, some of them in depth, as some of thoses recently built in Catalonia. It also reviews the possibilities that metallic prestressed structures offer to the consultant, including some examples. It provides a detailed analysis of the Fink truss beam, with special care in their pre-dimensioning and calculation both manually as matrix. It includes an analysis of strengthening reinforced slabs, with a beam that changes its stiffness at the discretion of the designer. Eventually it develops a joint solution of a beam and a steel column, connected by prestressed tendons, to make assembly easier, meeting the gaps with the connection by means of semi-rigid joints.

    The Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family has now been under construction for over 125 years. Construction on the façade enclosing the apse has recently been resumed, from elevation + 45,00 to + 64,00 m. Work has also begun on the central hyperboloid. This element springs from an inclined plane, between elevations + 60,00 and + 64,00 m, and extends upward to elevation + 77,00 m at the centre of the apse. The pages that follow provide a comprehensive overview of a number of questions respecting the design, engineering, construction and materials involved, as well the innovations implemented, to respond adequately to this challenging endeavour.

    El Templo de la Sagrada Familia (Barcelona, 1882¿hoy) es, aun inacabado, una de las obras más importantes de Gaudí y uno de los máximos exponentes de la arquitectura modernista catalana. Este artículo hace un recorrido en la evolución de la construcción del Templo, haciendo hincapié en los retos constructivos que han supuesto las formas de Gaudí. A lo largo de la historia los materiales se han adaptado a las necesidades de cada parte a realizar. A finales del s. XIX, Gaudí empezó construyendo principalmente a base de mampostería tradicional, pero dedicó años al estudio del resto del Templo y a los diferentes materiales con los que podía construirse. El texto continúa describiendo cómo los colaboradores de Gaudí siguieron las obras tras su muerte y cómo, en los últimos años, se han introducido en el Templo los últimos avances en los procesos constructivos y en los materiales. Buen ejemplo de ello son los hormigones de prestaciones especiales utilizados en la actualidad y las técnicas de dibujo asistido por ordenador más avanzadas del mercado.

    The Sagrada Família is Gaudi's unfinished work, to which he exclusively dedicated his last years of life. Even though he only got to build a small part of the total, he defined the rest through models and photographs. Gaudi's design for the inside of the Temple was based on a new geometric architecture that made extensive use of ruled surfaces (paraboloids, hyperboloids, ellipsoids), opening a new field which later architects have followed. The following article aims at showing the construction complexity of these structures, especially in relation to the set-up of their formwork. The vaults, which cover the naves at 30, 45, and 60 m heights, will be discussed. This discussion will show how the construction method, and in consequence the formwork, is adapted to the construction needs according to the geometric shape, size, position, material, and repetitions of each vault.

    Despite its unfinished state, the Temple of the Holy Family, or Sagrada Familia, is Antoni Gaudi¿s most widely recognized work and one of the most important milestones in the development of Catalan Modernism at the beginning of the twentieth century. This article aims to analyze the role played by concrete in the three different stages of the construction process and to illustrate the uniqueness of the Sagrada Familia. Reinforced concrete started being used in the building¿s construction in 1918 to resist the tensions produced in the pinnacles of the facade. From that moment on, mass concrete, reinforced concrete, and prefabricated concrete have been used in response to the needs that have arisen. Lately, following in Gaudi¿s innovative spirit, the latest advances in building technologies have been introduced in the Sagrada Familia . An example of this innovation is the use of high-strength concrete since 1998.

    La present tesi neix de les inquietuds que generen els singulars arcs de les obres de Gaudí, a voltes de perfil parabòlic, a voltes catenari, així com de la singular manera de calcular i modelar la forma mitjançant el mètode dels models penjats de cordes i pesos.La tesi s'estructura en tres grans parts. La primera fa un recorregut històric abans de Gaudí des de la geometria grega cercant l'orígen de la corba paràbola i de la resta de corbes còniques i cercant les regles antigues de dimensionar els arcs que recolliren els tractats de construcció, fins arribar al descobriment de la corba catenària, i el naixement de la resistència de materials i l'estàtica gràfica. Aquestes corbes planes, dutes a l'espai i posades en moviment, generaran una sèrie de superfícies, entre elles, les reglades que tan interessaran a Gaudí per les seves aplicacions a la construcció de les seves obres: paraboloides hiperbòlics, hiperboloides d'un full, helicoides, conoides... Ens interessarà de buscar quan Gaudí comença a familiaritzar-se amb la representació d'aquestes superfícies, qüestió absolutament necessària i prèvia a la posterior utilització exhaustiva en els seus projectes.En la segona part abarca el període de Gaudí estudiant i de Gaudí arquitecte. S'analitzen en detall els seus expedients acadèmics, cercant els llibres i publicacions pròpies de cada un dels seus professors així com dels apunts de classes d'altres alumnes o companys de Gaudí que s'hagin conservat fins avui. L'estudi permet fer-se una bona idea del perfil personal de cada un d'aquests professors així com dels continguts docents que impartien, sobretot en aquelles matèries relacionades amb el tema que ens ocupa, la geometria i la mecànica.Aquesta part dóna resposta a un dels interrogants que motivaren l'inici del present estudi, i és la de determinar com i quan Gaudí va formar-se per emprendre el camí en solitari de calcular arcs i voltes amb el singular mètode dels models de cordes i pesos, de la mateixa manera que mostra el moment en què comença a veure superfícies reglades en tractats de descriptiva i realitza complexos exercicis d'ombres on aquestes superfícies hi són implicades.D'altra banda, de l'observació dels càlculs gràfics de Gaudí i dels seus col·laboradors, es desprèn que el mètode que utilitzaven és molt pròxim al mètode que explicava el professor Torras a les classes de Resistència de materials. L'ànalisi i reconstrucció d'uns càlculs gràfics, exemplificadors, dels tres principals col·laboradors de Gaudí serveixen per explicar amb la màxima claretat didàctica el funcionament del mètode, des del cas simple resoluble en el pla fins als casos de composició de funiculars a l'espai. L'exposició "Gaudí: la recerca de la forma" la reconstrucció física, que seguí a la reconstrucció virtual, d'un model inèdit del projecte previ de l'església de la Colònia Güell va servir per experimentar i explicar al gran públic, sempre amb aquesta visió pedagògica del tema, el singular mètode creatiu i de comprovació estructural simultània.La darrera part s'obre cap al futur amb una proposta de recuperar l'esperit del mètode, la intensa connexió entre al fase de disseny i la de càlcul. La viabilitat de la proposta pasa per l'oferiment d'un programa que permeti processos gràfics de càlcul iteratiu amb un dinamisme i interactivitat tal que refaci en un instant tot un plànol que abans necessitava molt d'esforç, quan cada una de les proves implicaven refer a mà tot el procés.
