    The capacitance of the human body to ground is included in the equivalent circuit of some capacitive sensors. It is a recognized source of interference in bioimpedance and biopotentials measurements, and a relevant parameter to model electrostatic discharges (ESD) and to predict the effects of electromagnetic fields on the human body. This paper describes a method to estimate that impedance from 10 kHz to 1 MHz based on a very simple fixture intended for impedance analyzers that can measure only ungrounded impedances. Relevant criteria to design that fixture and parameters that limit its performance are first assessed by measuring known capacitors and later applied to measurements in human subjects.

    There is a growing interest on measuring time intervals between the J peak of the ballistocardiogram (BCG) and several features of other cardiovascular signals such as the ECG in order to obtain cardiovascular function markers. Nevertheless, possible uncertainty factors involved in these measurements have not been identified and analyzed, which is a necessary step to advance towards standardization in this reemerging biomedical engineering field. In this paper we analyze the effect of the low-pass cutoff frequency and phase characteristic of filters, noise and power line interference on J-peak time measurement. We conclude that BCG acquisition systems require a minimum low-pass cutoff frequency of 25 Hz but the phase angle of filters at this frequency introduce more than 6 ms delay that increases with increasing filter order. Further, SNR and power line interference levels respectively below about 25 dB and 30 dB, commonly found in data acquisition systems in this area, may lead to uncertainties in the time position of the J peak of tens of milliseconds, which are comparable to measured time interval changes that may have diagnostic interest.

    Impedance measurements based on voltage pulse injection and current detection are faster and easier to implement than measurements based on sine waves, but transients produced in the current-to-voltage conversion may lead to large deviations in the measurement result. Because those transients depend on the same impedance being measured, solutions based on specific circuit values fail for large measurement ranges. We propose to reduce those transients by controlling the rise time of the pulse being applied to the impedance under test. For a particular implementation of the method, transient amplitude has been reduced to less than 1 % of the full scale voltage, as compared to 40 % overshoot when faster voltage pulses were applied.

    Previous works have shown that tetrapolar bioimpedance measurements are susceptible to stray capacitance between the subjects¿ body and ground. This paper provides a circuit model to analyze that effect, which includes, among other, the non-negligible impedance of electrodes and the finite input impedance of the voltage amplifier when measuring by applying a voltage and measuring the resulting current and the potential difference between two points on the surface of the volume conductor. When assuming common values for the parameters involved in the circuit, the model predicts gain and nonlinearity errors at any frequency, and resonance. In addition to the stray capacitance to ground, the other relevant parameters are the capacitance of the ¿low-current¿ electrode and the input capacitance of the differential voltage amplifier.

Se basa en una báscula electrónica doméstica modificada a la que se ha añadido una barra a modo de doble mango y que permite adquirir simultáneamente las derivaciones I, II y III del electrocardiograma (ECG), el pletismograma de impedancias (IPG) y el balistocardiograma (BCG).     This paper describes the circuits and signal processing techniques that convert an electronic bathroom scale intended for bioimpedance analysis (BIA) into a compact system to acquire the electrocardiogram (ECG), the ballistocardiogram (BCG), and the impedance plethysmogram (IPG) using only plantar measurements. The signal processing methods proposed rely on the higher quality of the IPG as compared to the ECG and BCG and they enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of these two signals, which otherwise could be too poor in noncontrolled environments. The system is suitable for long-term periodic monitoring of cardiovascular function.

    Se presenta un análisis experimental del efecto de las interferencias capacitivas en dos circuitos de interfaz directa entre sensores capacitivos y microcontrolador, uno basado en la transferencia de carga (CT, charge transfer) y otro basado en la carga/descarga de una red RC (RC). Los resultados muestran que la interfaz basada en el método CT es más robusta a la interferencia capacitiva que la interfaz RC.

    Método y aparato para obtener información cardiovascular en los pies.

    En esta Patente de Invención se describen un método y un aparato para obtener varios indicadores del sistema cardiovascular de una persona utilizando exclusivamente mediciones en sus pies, poniéndolos en contacto mecánico con una pluralidad de electrodos dispuestos en una superficie sobre la que se pueda plantar o que pueda tocar con los pies estando sentada. El conjunto de electrodos utilizado permite obtener el electrocardiograma (ECG) entre los dos pies y el pletismograma de impedancia (IPG) en un pie. El IPG refleja el cambio de volumen al llegar la onda de pulso arterial. La amplitud y forma de onda del IPG y el retardo entre la onda R del ECG y algún punto característico del IPG, aportan información sobre el sistema cardiovascular, y en particular sobre la elasticidad de las arterias y sobre la presión arterial.

    Método y aparato para obtener información cardiovascular midiendo entre dos extremidades.

    En esta Patente de Invención se describen un método y un aparato para obtener información del sistema cardiovascular latido a latido y de forma continua, que están basados exclusivamente en mediciones entre dos extremidades y realizadas con un par de electrodos distales en cada una de ellas. La medida se realiza haciendo circular una corriente alterna entre un electrodo de cada extremidad y midiendo la diferencia de potencial entre los otros dos electrodos, uno también en cada extremidad. Esta diferencia de potencial tiene una componente de baja frecuencia que es el electrocardiograma (o ECG) y otra componente que tiene la frecuencia de la corriente alterna inyectada y de la que se extrae el denominado pletismograma de impedancia (IPG, del inglés impedance plethysmogram). La información cardiovascular se determinará midiendo el lapso entre algún elemento característico predefinido del ECG y alguno del IPG.

    Método y aparato para obtener varias derivaciones simultáneas del electrocardiograma.

    En esta patente de invención se describen un método y un aparato para obtener simultáneamente varias derivaciones estándar del electrocardiograma (ECG) de una persona plantada sobre una superficie o sentada y con los pies apoyados sobre una superficie, y cuyas manos, en cualquiera de los dos casos, establecen contacto con sendos electrodos. La superficie sobre la que está plantado el paciente o en la que se apoyan sus pies incluye dos zonas conductoras que actúan como electrodos, uno para cada pie. Todos los electrodos están conectados al cuerpo principal del aparato, que para mayor comodidad puede formar una unidad con la superficie con la que están en contacto los pies de la persona de la cual se desea obtener el ECG, o alternativamente dicha superficie y los electrodos de las manos forman una unidad que se puede conectar a un electrocardiógrafo convencional.

    Biopotential measurements with capacitive electrodes do not need any direct contact between electrode and skin, which saves the time devoted to expose and prepare the contact area when measuring with conductive electrodes. However, mechanical vibrations resulting from physiological functions such as respiration and cardiac contraction can change the capacitance of the electrode and affect the recordings. This transformation of mechanical vibrations into undesired electric signals is termed microphonics. We have evaluated microphonics in capacitive ECG recordings obtained from a dressed subject seated on a common chair with electrodes placed on the front side of the backrest of the chair. Depending on the softness of the backrest, the recordings may be clearly affected by the displacement of the thorax back wall due to the respiration and to the heart’s mechanical activity.

    Electronic bathroom scales are an easy-to-use, affordable mean to measure physiological parameters in addition to body weight. They have been proposed to obtain the ballistocardiogram (BCG) and derive from it the heart rate, cardiac output and systolic blood pressure. Therefore, weighing scales may suit intermittent monitoring in e-health and patient screening. Scales intended for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) have also been proposed to estimate the heart rate by amplifying the pulsatile impedance component superimposed on the basal impedance. However, electronic weighing scales cannot easily obtain the BCG from people that have a single leg neither are bioimpedance measurements between both feet recommended for people wearing a pacemaker or other electronic implants, neither for pregnant women. We propose a method to detect the heart rate (HR) from bioimpedance measured in a single foot while standing on an bathroom weighting scale intended for BIA. The electrodes built in the weighing scale are used to apply a 50 kHz voltage between the outer electrode pair and to measure the drop in voltage across the inner electrode pair. The agreement with the HR simultaneously obtained from the ECG is excellent. We have also compared the drop in voltage across the waist and the thorax with that obtained when measuring bioimpedance between both feet to compare the possible risk of the proposed method to that of existing BIA scales.

    Ballistocardiography is a non-invasive technique that yields information about the cardiovascular system that is not available in other external signals such as the electrocardiogram (ECG). In the last years, several research groups have obtained the ballistocardiogram (BCG) by using instrumentation methods simpler than those available in the 1950s and that did not progress because of their complexity as compared to ultrasound and other noninvasive techniques that are in common use nowadays. We describe a novel method for real-time robust heart- (HR) and respiratory- (RR) rate detection from a subject that stands on a common electronic bathroom scale. BCG signals from the scale are wirelessly sent to a PC where algorithms based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) extract the HR and the RR. HR results are compared to those obtained from the ECG. To better assess the RR results, subjects have been asked to synchronize their breathing rate to an on-screen bar-graph set at a constant rate of breaths per minute. This method to obtain the heart and respiratory rates is simple, compact, non-invasive and passive, and can be applied to any person able to stand on an electronic weighing scale, even if wearing shoes.

    Las básculas de baño electrónicas son un medio sencillo y asequible para medir, además del peso corporal, el balistocardiograma (BCG) y a partir de él extraer el ritmo cardíaco, y estimar variaciones en el gasto cardíaco y la presión arterial sistólica. Las básculas para el análisis de bioimpedancia (BIA) también han sido propuestas para obtener el ritmo cardíaco mediante la amplificación de la componente de impedancia pulsante (pletismograma de impedancia, IPG) superpuesta a la impedancia basal. Sin embargo, las básculas electrónicas no pueden obtener fácilmente el BCG de personas incapaces de mantenerse de pie, o el IPG de personas que tienen una sola pierna o usen calcetines. En este trabajo proponemos un método para detectar el ritmo cardíaco (HR) a partir de la bioimpedancia plantar capacitiva adquirida en un solo pie o entre ambos pies de un sujeto en dos situaciones distintas: de pie sobre una báscula de baño comercial y sentado, con los pies apoyados en los electrodos de la báscula.

    Se presenta un sistema para detectar automáticamente cambios hemodinámicos de forma no invasiva y en tiempo real. Se basa en una báscula de baño electrónica con la que se adquiere el balistocardiograma (BCG) y un sistema para adquirir el ECG mediante dos electrodos secos en cada mano. Las medidas realizadas sugieren que el intervalo temporal entre la onda R del ECG y la onda J del BCG puede estar correlacionado con las variaciones de presión sanguínea sistólica (SBP) producidas durante la maniobra de Valsalva. Se ha evaluado cuantitativamente la eficiencia del algoritmo implementado para medir dicho intervalo en tiempo real y se presentan los resultados preliminares de dicha evaluación.

    We present the theoretical analysis and performance results of a direct microcontroller unit (MCU) interface circuit for capacitive sensors based on the charge-transfer method, when stray capacitances are considered. The interface circuit can implement two alternative two-point calibration techniques that reduce the effects of stray capacitance, temperature, and MCU parameters that depend on the power supply voltage. The best measurement deviation achieved from 0degC to 50degC and for power supply voltage from 4.0 to 5 V is below 0.01 full-scale range (FSR) for the two subranges from 10 to 100 pF and from 100 pF to 1 nF and 0.08 FSR for the subrange from 2 to 10 pF.
