    In the present work influence of different parameters of the rough honing process on surface roughness and material removal rate were studied. Specifically, second order mathematical models are presented for mean average roughness Ra (µm), maximum peak-to-valley roughness Rt (µm) and material removal rate Qm (cm min-1), obtained by means of regression analysis. For doing this a central composite design was defined, with a full two-level five variables design of experiments, 5 centre points and 10 face-centred points. Steel cylinders were employed. Abrasive chosen was cubic boron nitride. Considered factors were grain size, density of abrasive, tangential speed of cylinders, linear speed of honing head and pressure of abrasive stones on internal surface of cylinders. From the models most influential factors on process quality as well as on productivity were determined. Within the range studied, roughness depends mainly on grain size, pressure and density of abrasive. Material removal rate depends on grain size and pressure, followed by tangential speed. Optimization by means of the desirability function technique allowed determining most appropriate conditions to minimize roughness (surface quality) and/or maximize material removal rate (productivity).© 2013 Elsevier Inc.     In a previous paper, artificial neural networks were employed for modelling average roughness Ra in rough honing processes as a function of process variables, namely grain size, density, linear speed, tangential speed and pressure, by means of the direct problem. In addition, neural network model was compared to statistical models for modelling roughness. In the present paper the inverse problem was studied and analyzed by means of neural networks, in which given a certain average roughness Ra value, the model predicts process variables to be employed. This is not possible with statistical models. Two different approaches were considered: use of a single network or use of five networks.

Stones are made by the sintering process of abrasive grains, a metallic bond, and a humectant that favors covering of each abrasive grain by the bond. Incorrect mixing of abrasive grains with the bond and humectant can result in stones with nonuniform abrasive grain distribution. As the abrasive stone wears out, grain distribution will vary and modify efficiency of the honing operation. Tin is the metal having the lowest melting point among metals in the bond. By means of a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, tin segregation was discarded, which could have led to abrasive grain segregation. Later, mixing tests of the different components of the stones were performed at different mixing times

    A numerical model was developed to predict the roughness profile along a line in the feed direction, in contour milling operations with cylindrical milling tools. From the model, average roughness Ra and maximum peak-to-valley roughness Rt were calculated for families of tools defined by 100,000 random combinations of radius values. Radii were selected by means of the Monte Carlo Method. Each family is defined by an average radius and a standard deviation of radius, assuming normal behavior. Histograms, roughness variation intervals, medians and modes, were calculated at different feeds. The model was validated through experimental tests. Effect of standard deviation of radius, number of teeth and tool diameter were studied. Although radius values were randomly selected according to a normal law, roughness values did not follow a normal distribution. At low standard deviations, intervals of roughness values, medians and modes vary only slightly with feed, except at very low feeds where intervals are narrow. On the contrary, at higher standard deviations, median, mode and width of roughness intervals rise as feed increases. Use of a lower number of teeth and higher tool diameter leads to narrower intervals and asymmetrical roughness frequency distributions even at high feeds, with modes near upper reference values.

    A partir de dades experimentals obtingudes en una màquina d'assaigs construïda a l'efecte,l'objectiu d'aquesta tesi és modelitzar el procés de brunyit dels interiors de cilindres d'acer(procés de honing), utilitzant les xarxes neuronals artificials.Es seleccionen les cinc variables de procés que es consideren més rellevants i es defineix elPerceptró Multicapa amb l'algoritme d'aprenentatge backpropagation i el sistema de validaciócross-validation, com a xarxa neuronal base.En una primera fase es dissenya un model neuronal, de forma què a partir de les dades de procésseleccionades, dóna el paràmetre de rugositat superficial "Ra" que hi correspondria.En una segona fase es modelitza el problema invers. A partir del valor de la rugositat superficial"Ra" que es desitja, el model neuronal explicita els valors de les variables de procés que lafarien possible.Finalment, es dissenya un model iteratiu, utilitzant les xarxes seleccionades en les fasesanteriors, per millorar la modelització inversa.

    The continuously growing utilization of ceramic compounds in the field of medicine, industry and aerospace, among others, imply a high degree of specialization in terms of the material properties and functionalization due to the diversity of the requirements of the ceramic parts. The necessity of lightweight final parts with suitable surface properties oriented to biomedic applications demands innovative ceramic compounds whose machining is, in many cases, considerably difficult due to the fragility or dustiness of the material. In this respect, novel solutions for the materialization of ceramic prototypes following subtractive methodologies become essential. Examples of these novel solutions include the adaptation of subjection systems that permit the machining processes involved without the damage of the part. The present article summarizes the development of a tailored subjection system for the machining of advanced ceramic cups with biomedical applications in the field of prosthetic implantology.

    A numerical model was developed that predicts topography and surface roughness in ball-end milling processes, based on geometric tool¿workpiece intersection. It allows determining surface topography as a function of feed per tooth and revolution, radial depth of cut, axial depth of cut, number of teeth, tool teeth radii, helix angle, eccentricity and phase angle between teeth. It determines profile roughness parameters, as well as areal roughness parameters such as average roughness Sa, maximum peak-to-valley roughness St, volume of summit material V and a proposed new time coefficient Ct. It relates surface roughness to milling time. Moreover, feed per tooth and revolution f and radial depth of cut Rd were calculated that minimise parameters Sa·Ct, St·Ct and V·Ct. Minimum Sa·Ct and St·Ct provide minimum roughness with minimum milling time. Minimum V·Ct means minimum milling time with minimum material removal in manual polishing operation. At low radial depth of cut, roughness is low regardless of feed employed. On the contrary, at high radial depth of cut, roughness depends remarkably on feed: the higher the feed, the higher the roughness. In order to simultaneously minimise roughness and time, high f and low Rd should be used. In that case also volume of summit material is minimised.

    In the manufacturing process of abrasive stones with cubic boron nitride (CBN) as abrasive and metallic binder, some differences were observed regarding abrasive density at different heights of the stones. If abrasive density is too low, honing stones do not cut the material properly. Honing stones are obtained by means of sintering processes. Previously, a humectant material is added to abrasive grains, and then they are mixed with metallic binder. Humectant is used to assure covering of each abrasive grain with binder. In the present work, along the manufacturing process of honing stones, quality of the mixing process of components was assessed by means of two different parameters: covering degree of grains by binder (CD) and homogeneity degree (HD) of the mix before sintering process. Both parameters are calculated by means of weight measurement in the mixing step. Different quantities of humectant and different mixing times were taken into account. A higher quantity of humectant implies a higher covering degree, leading to more homogeneous honing stones. For this reason, highest quantity of humectant is recommended within the range studied. However, a certain mixing time is required to assure homogeneity of the mix prior to sintering.

    In polishing tests, precise determination of polishing time needed is difficult, since representation of surface roughness against polishing time leads to an asymptotic curve. In the present work, results of the polishing tests of previously ground surfaces are presented. Different roughness parameters were considered. Grinding wheels of 100 and 150 Norton grain size respectively were used. Cutting speed was 25 m s-1 and depth of cut was 0.02 mm. Two different feeds were considered: 9 m min-1 and 15 m min-1. A polishing test was performed by means of corundum polishing pads of grain size 2500. Results show that, the higher the initial grain size of the grinding wheel, the higher initial roughness is as expected. Amplitude roughness parameters such as Ra and Rq decrease with polishing time. Regarding material percentage parameters, Rk and Rpk decrease more sharply than amplitude roughness parameters in the first 20 s of the polishing test, and afterwards decrease slightly. Rvk decreases more slowly than amplitude roughness parameters along the polishing test. Keywords: grinding, polishing, roughness parameters

    Sometimes it is difficult to choose one or several cutting tools for specific or general uses between the myriad of tools that exist today in the market. It is also necessary to spend lots of time analyzing costs and other important properties between the models that are available. To overcome this, there exist some software applications that might help, but normally with clearly commercial purposes that can distort the best selection. For this reason, trying to adopt a multilateral approach, it is not easy neither quick to gather partial or total information about a single tool searching it directly from the manufacturers website or massive pdf files. The study of the different manufacturer's catalogues reveals lots of common points by presenting the technical information required. The pair materialoperation represents the basis of the data base structure with which the software application presented is developed. Despite the heterogeneity of the catalogues formats, all the properties presented are classified in only three groups: general, geometric and mechanistic properties; the later one depending on the pair materialoperation selected. The data base can contain tool references of different manufacturers for materials and operations and it is totally upgradable by the user. SelecTool is developed to guide the user step by step to specify the search properties. A different range of values of selected properties will modify the results that appear on screen. An important aspect supported is that the user defines the exact hierarchy with which the application searches and shows the results. Finally, the application presented is able to compare graphically the selected tools and generate other type of files for further analysis. © Springer-Verlag London 2013.

    Método para el control de un proceso de bruñido de superficies para generar rugosidades con valles y mesetas planas en particular el "plateau-honing" que comprende: definir tipo de plateau honing deseado, según los parámetros de rugosidad de probabilidad Rvq, Rpq y Rmq; determinar con ellos la curva de probabilidad del proceso honing base más proceso honing de acabado; obtener las correspondientes curvas de Abbott-Firestone estimadas; determinar volumen del material que debe arrancarse a partir de la diferencia de áreas entre ambas curvas de Abbott-Firestone; determinar tiempo de proceso de honing de acabado igualando el volumen de material que debe arrancarse, con el volumen determinado a partir de la tasa de arranque de material; determinar número de pasadas, a partir del tiempo de proceso, de la cinemática de máquina y del recorrido de herramienta. También se determinan los parámetros de los procesos honing de desbaste, honing de semi-acabado y honing de acabado.

    Herein are presented roughness results of honing of steel cylinders with cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive tools. Different honing parameters such as honing stone pressure against the workpiece, tangential speed of the honing head as well as grain size of the abrasive stone were varied in order to determine their influence on the surface roughness of cylinders. Four different strategies were implemented to measure and characterise roughness of inner surfaces of honed steel cylinders. The variability in results obtained with each strategy is compared. The first three strategies consist in measuring roughness at one, three or nine points, respectively, which are uniformly distributed over a circumference located at one of the cylinder ends. The fourth strategy is based on the third one: it entails measuring roughness at nine points, and then subsequently filtering results to eliminate any extreme roughness value lying outside the boundaries set by Chauvenet's criterion. At each point of measurement, roughness is measured in the direction of the cylinder generatrix. It was verified that the larger the number of measurement points, the lower the variability in roughness values obtained. Therefore, it is recommended to make at least nine measurements per cylinder and to filter values to avoid any non-representative, outlier value. The variability in these values was quantified firstly according to relative differences. Secondly, variability was quantified by means of the coefficient of variation which provides smaller values than the relative difference, although less intuitive and less direct.

    In the present paper results about simulation of surface topography in side milling with cylindrical milling tool are presented. Different values for grinding errors of tool radii and for eccentricity were taken into account. In addition, different helix angles were considered. When grinding errors increase, effective radius of some cutting teeth increases. This tends to reduce the number of machining marks per tool revolution. Eccentricity produces a similar effect. Provided that the tool has eccentricity and helix angle, different profiles will be obtained at different workpiece’s heights. If eccentricity is high enough, roughness heterogeneity bands are found at different heights on the workpiece’s surface. In the roughness bands the number of cutting teeth marks per revolution is higher than in other areas. The higher helix angle the narrower width of heterogeneity bands. However, maximum and minimum roughness values along the workpiece’s height are the same, regardless of helix angle.
