    Transformer size can be significantly reduced by increasing the operating frequency, which may be achieved by means of power electronics converters installed as interfaces to the power frequency systems at both transformer sides. In this work, a model for a bidirectional high-frequency power electronic transformer is presented. Several case studies have been carried out in order to evaluate the behavior of the transformer under different operating conditions and test the impact on the power quality. The results show that the electronic power transformer, also known as solid-state transformer, not only matches the functions of a conventional power transformer, but also provides additional capabilities to mitigate dynamic power quality problems.

    The detailed switch-level models of front-end diode rectifier loads can be readily implemented using a number of transient simulation programs, such as PSCAD/EMTDC, and the toolboxes in Matlab/Simulink. To improve the simulation efficiency for the system-level studies, the so-called dynamic average models have been widely used by researchers and engineers. Recently, several average-value modeling methodologies for the conventional three-phase (six-pulse) front-end rectifier loads have been discussed, and the dynamic performance of several developed models has been demonstrated in discontinuous and continuous modes. In this paper, the effects of topological variations of the ac-side filters on the system performance are investigated. Also, the steady-state and dynamic impedances predicted by the average models under balanced and unbalanced operation are compared. The studies and analyses presented here extend and complement those set forth in the preceding companion publication.

    The solid state transformer is an emerging technology which aims at replacing the conventional lowfrequency power transformer by means of a high-frequency transformer driven by a proper AC/AC power electronics conversion system, at both transformer sides. In comparison with the conventional power transformer, the solid state transformer provides extended and enhanced operating capabilities that can be achieved with an appropriate controller design for the power electronics converters. In this work, the interaction of the solid state transformer with a distribution system is analyzed under different operating conditions. Bidirectional active power flow, full reactive power control, low-voltage side current unbalance management and high-voltage side low-voltage ride-through are achieved with the proposed control approach.

    This paper discusses design and application of the multiagent simulation technology aiming to meet smart grid requirements. The difference between multiagent systems and multiagent simulation in smart grid applications is clarified. The state-of-the-art applications of multiagent simulation in power and energy systems are classified based on the simulation environment. The paper also addresses the interface issues including synchronization and data distribution for multiagent co-simulation. In addition, the emerging research paradigms in smart grid multiagent simulation are identified.

    Low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) requirements demand wind-power plants to remain connected to the network in presence of grid-voltage dips. Most dips present positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. Hence, regulators based on symmetrical components are well suited to control gridconnected converters. A neutral-point-clamped topology has been considered as an active front end of a distributed power-generation system, following the trend of increasing power and voltage levels in wind-power systems. Three different current controllers based on symmetrical components and linear quadratic regulator have been considered. The performance of each controller is evaluated on LVRT requirement fulfillment, grid-current balancing, maximum grid-current value control, and oscillating power flow. Simulation and experimental results show that all three controllers meet LVRT requirements, although different system performance is found for each control approach. Therefore, controller selection depends on the system constraints and the type of preferred performance features.

    This paper presents a new Power Electronic Building Block (PEBB) designed to facilitate the implementation of different power converter topologies. The proposed PEBB consists of two diodes and two transistors and it can be used to implement the most relevant power converter topologies, due to its modularity. The addition of the two diodes is an exclusive feature of the new PEBB, which permits to implement neutral point clamped (NPC) multilevel converters. The application of the PEBB to build a three-level NPC converter and a dc-dc push-pull converter is presented and detailed in the paper, and demonstrate that the presented PEBB can be useful to shorten converter development times.

    The CIGRE WG C4 301 is preparing a guide on line surge arresters (LSA). The goal of that document is to provide practical information on the use of line arresters in order to help electricity utilities to select appropriate solutions. This paper summarizes the major elements of the CIGRE WG document. It starts by listing the main reasons for LSA installation: lightning performance improvement, security of population, switching surge control, line upgrading and compaction, double circuit outage reduction, live line working, extended protection of substation. Then it discusses the respective advantages and disadvantages of line arresters with and without series air gap. Lightning flashover rate is a key aspect for evaluating the lightning performance of overhead lines. The next section summarizes the main steps of a procedure for lightning flashover rate calculation. The paper is completed with the study of the lightning performance of a 225 kV double- circuit. Double-circuit outages on double-circuit overhead lines often lead to critical power interruption problems. The case study presented in this paper compares a solution aimed at reducing the number of outages based on unbalanced insulation with a solution based on the installation of LSAs. Flashover rate calculations were carried out with a software tool based on the EMTP-RV and using a three-dimension electrogeometric model.

    de la Tesis DoctoralIntroducciónExisten muchas causas por las que se pueden originar sobretensiones en una red de potencia. La clasificación más aceptada distingue tres tipos de sobretensiones: Sobretensiones temporales, sobretensiones de maniobra, y sobretensiones de origen atmosférico. No existe una frontera muy clara entre un tipo y otro de sobretensión; por ejemplo, una sobretensión originada por un cortocircuito es de tipo temporal, pero transitoriamente puede ser calificada como sobretensión de maniobra.En redes de tensión nominal inferior a 400 kV las sobretensiones debidas al rayo son más peligrosas que las debidas a otra causa, mientras que por encima de 400 kV las sobretensiones de maniobra suelen ser las más peligrosas.La importancia de las sobretensiones atmosféricas crece conforme disminuye la tensión nominal de los componentes afectados por el rayo. El valor de las sobretensiones que se pueden producir en una red de distribución originadas por un rayo es tan elevado frente al valor de la tensión nominal de la red que tanto el nivel de aislamiento de los componentes como la selección y coordinación de protecciones se realiza teniendo en cuenta el efecto de las sobretensiones atmosféricas. En general, el nivel de las sobretensiones de origen interno es inferior o muy inferior al nivel de aislamiento de los componentes de una red de distribución, siendo el número de averías originadas por una sobretensión de este tipo mucho más reducido que el originado por sobretensiones atmosféricas directas o inducidas por el rayo.Esta Tesis Doctoral está dedicada exclusivamente a la evaluación de líneas de distribución frente a sobretensiones de origen atmosférico. Este estudio ha sido objeto de gran atención durante los últimos años y existe una abundante literatura centrada exclusivamente en este campo. Sin embargo, todavía existen muchos puntos sobre los que no hay un conocimiento suficientemente preciso; probablemente, los más importantes sean la propia naturaleza del rayo y los principales parámetros que describen su comportamiento.ObjetivoEl objetivo principal de esta Tesis Doctoral es el cálculo de la tasa de contorneamientos por sobretensiones atmosféricas en líneas aéreas de distribución con y sin apantallamiento en función de los parámetros más característicos del rayo y de la línea, así como de la actividad atmosférica de la zona por donde transcurre la línea.Estructura y contenidoEl Capítulo 1 contiene una introducción al trabajo realizado.En el Capítulo 2 se resumen los antecedentes y los objetivos de esta Tesis Doctoral.En el Capítulo 3 se presenta una introducción al proceso de descarga de una nube, y se detallan los parámetros más importantes de un rayo.En el Capítulo 4 se realiza un análisis del comportamiento de líneas aéreas de distribución frente al rayo. El cálculo de sobretensiones se realiza de dos formas diferentes, mediante algoritmo y mediante simulación digital con el programa EMTP/ATP.El Capítulo 5 está dedicado al cálculo de la tasa de contorneamientos en líneas aéreas de distribución debidos a descargas atmosféricas. El cálculo se realiza de manera sistemática, y de manera estadística aplicando el método de Monte Carlo.En el Capítulo 6 se analiza el comportamiento de líneas aéreas de distribución frente al rayo empleando redes neuronales. El cálculo de la tasa de contorneamientos se realiza de manera estadística aplicando el método de Monte Carlo.El Capítulo 7 presenta las conclusiones más importantes de los diferentes estudios realizados.El Capítulo 8 incluye una bibliografía muy completa sobre el tema.

    of the PhDIntroductionOvervoltages in electrical power networks can be originated by several different causes. The most accepted classification differentiates 3 types of overvoltages: Temporary overvoltages, switching overvoltages, and lightning overvoltages. It doesn't exist a very clear edge between them; for example, an overvoltage caused by a short-circuit is usually a temporary overvoltage, but transiently can be qualified as a switching overvoltage.Lightning is the most dangerous overvoltage in a power network with a rated voltage less than 400 kV. However, switching overvoltages are the most important in networks with a value of the rated voltage higher than 400 kV.The importance of lightning overvoltages increases with the decrease of the rated voltage of the affected components. The value of the lightning overvoltages produced in a distribution network is so high in front of the value of the rated voltage of the network than the insulation level of the components and the selection and the co-ordination of protections are carried out by taking into account the effect of lightning overvoltages. In general, the level of the overvoltages due to internal causes is less than the insulation level of the components of a distribution network, being the number of faults caused by this type of overvoltage much more reduced than this caused by external overvoltages (direct or induced by the lightning).This PhD is dedicated exclusively to the evaluation of distribution overhead lines in front of lightning overvoltages. This study has been very important during the last years and there is a lot of information focused in this field. However, there is several points where the knowledge is not enough yet; probably, the most important are the own nature of lightning and the main parameters which describe this behaviour.ObjectivesThe main goal of this PhD is the calculation of the flashover rate of lightning overvoltages for distribution overhead shielded and unshielded lines in function of the most important lightning and line parameters, as well as the atmospheric activity.Structure and contentsIn Chapter 1 is the introduction of the study carried out.In Chapter 2 are summarised the antecedents and the objectives of this PhD.In Chapter 3 an introduction of the discharge process of a cloud is presented, and also the most important lightning parameters are described.In Chapter 4 is carried out an analysis of the lightning performance of distribution lines. The calculation of overvoltages is carried out in a two different ways, by means of algorithm and by means of digital simulation with the EMTP/ATP program.Chapter 5 is dedicated to the calculation of flashover voltages in distribution overhead lines. The calculation is carried out in a systematic way and also in a statistical way by applying the Monte Carlo method.In Chapter 6 the lightning performance of overhead lines is done by means of neural networks. The flashover voltage calculation is carried out in a statistical way by applying the Monte Carlo method.Chapter 7 presents the most important conclusions of the different studies carried out in this work.Chapter 8 includes a very complete bibliography about the studied subject.
