    Today there are many media sharing applications that use diverse metadata formats to describe media resources. This leads to interoperability issues in cataloguing, searching and annotation. This situation poses schema matching algorithms in the eye of the storm of metadata interoperability. In this paper we present two different solutions for multimedia metadata schema matching using variable linkage algorithms. These methods consist in directly comparing the data values stored in the different metadata variables, allowing to overcome the inherent limitations of schema-level matching approaches. We show the feasibility of these methods through some experiments with real metadata information extracted from the image hosting websites Deviantart, Flickr and Picasa.

    MPEG-M is a suite of ISO/IEC standards (ISO/IEC 23006) that has been developed under the auspices of Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). MPEG-M, also known as Multimedia Service Platform Technologies (MSPT), facilitates a collection of multimedia middleware APIs and elementary services as well as service aggregation so that service providers can offer users a plethora of innovative services by extending current IPTV technology toward the seamless integration of personal content creation and distribution, e-commerce, social networks and Internet distribution of digital media.

    El objetivo principal del trabajo presentado en esta tesis es el de describir la definición de mecanismos de interoperabilidad entre lenguajes de expresión de derechos y lenguajes de políticas. Empezando con la interoperabilidad entre lenguajes, se quiere ir un paso más allá y definir cómo servicios para la gestión de contenidos multimedia pueden interoperar por medio de arquitecturas estándares orientadas a servicios.Para conseguir este objetivo, varios estándares e iniciativas existentes se van a analizar y ser tenidas en cuenta. Respecto a los lenguajes de expresión de derechos y de políticas, se han considerado estándares tales como MPEG-21 Rights Expression Language (REL), Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) y eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML). Respecto a los servicios para la gestión del contenido multimedia, se han considerado la plataforma Multimedia Information Protection And Management System (MIPAMS), una implementación de una arquitectura basada en estándares, y el estándar Multimedia Service Platform Technologies (MSPT), también conocido como el estándar MPEG-M. La contribución de esta tesis se divide en dos partes, una dedicada a la interoperabilidad entre lenguajes y la otra dedicada a la interoperabilidad entre services, ambas dirigidas a la gestión de contenido multimedia. Se describen a continuación.La primera parte de la contribución describe cómo MPEG-21 REL, ODRL y XACML pueden interoperar, definiendo los mecanismos para traducir expresiones de lenguaje a lenguaje. Los mapeos proporcionan distintos niveles de granularidad, empezando por un mapeo basado en una solución programática basada en diagramas realizados con lenguajes de modelado de alto nivel como pueden ser Unified Modelling Language (UML) y Entity-Relationship (ER). El siguiente nivel de mapeo incluye mapeos específicos entre MPEG-21 REL y XACML y ODRL y XACML. Finalmente, se plantea una solución más general con el uso de un bróker. Parte de este trabajo se ha realizado en el contexto de la Red de Excelencia VISNET-II y del Proyecto Integrado AXMEDIS. Los resultados obtenidos avalan la validez de los métodos de interoperabilidad descritos.La segunda parte de la contribución describe cómo definir standards based building blocks (SB3) para proporcionar interoperabilidad entre servicios para la gestión del contenido multimedia. Esta definición se basa en el análisis de casos de uso existente para la gestión de contenido, desde los que necesitan menos seguridad sobre el contenido gestionado hasta los que requiere una gestión completa de los derechos digitales (DRM, digital rights management), incluyendo técnicas de control de acceso y cifrado, para soportar gestión segura del contenido. En esta sección también se presenta el trabajo realizado en los proyectos de investigación AXMEDIS, Musiteca y Culturalive. Además, se describe el trabajo de estandarización realizado en MPEG-M, especialmente en Elementary Services y Service Aggregation. Para demostrar el uso de ambas tecnologías se presenta una aplicación móvil que integra MPEG-M y MIPAMS.Además, se presentan las conclusiones y las líneas de trabajo futuro en la sección correspondiente, junto con las publicaciones asociadas a esta tesis, que se describen en el documento. En resumen, el trabajo presentado puede seguir diversas líneas de investigación. Por un lado, es necesario estudiar las nuevas versiones de los lenguajes de expresión de derechos y políticas aparecidos recientemente. Además, también habrá que tener en cuenta el lenguaje de expresión de contratos, MPEG-21 CEL, estandarizado recientemente, con el objetivo de evaluar la interoperabilidad con los lenguajes de expresión de derechos y políticas. Por otro lado, se deben seguir distintas iniciativas de estandarización para completar el mapa de SB3¿s, considerando estándares MPEG y otros no sólo relacionados con multimedia sino también con otros escenarios de aplicación como e-salud y e-gobierno.

    The main goal of the work presented in this thesis is to describe the definition of interoperability mechanisms between rights expression languages and policy languages. Starting from languages interoperability, the intention is to go a step further and define how services for multimedia content management can interoperate by means of service-oriented generic and standardised architectures. In order to achieve this goal, several standards and existing initiatives will be analysed and taken into account. Regarding rights expression languages and policy languages, standards like MPEG-21 Rights Expression Language (REL), Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL) and eXtensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML) are considered. Regarding services for content management, the Multimedia Information Protection And Management System (MIPAMS), a standards-based implemented architecture, and the Multimedia Service Platform Technologies (MSPT), also known as MPEG-M standard, are considered. The contribution of this thesis is divided into two parts, one devoted to languages interoperability and the other one devoted to services interoperability, both addressed to multimedia content management. They are briefly described next. The first part of the contribution describes how MPEG-21 REL, ODRL and XACML can interoperate, defining the mapping mechanisms to translate expressions from language to language. The mappings provided have different levels of granularity, starting from a mapping based on a programmatic approach coming from high-level modelling diagrams done using Unified Modelling Language (UML) and Entity-Relationship (ER). The next level of mappings includes specific mappings between MPEG-21 REL and XACML and ODRL and XACML. Finally, a more general solution is proposed by using a broker. Part of this work was done in the context of the VISNET-II Network of Excellence and the AXMEDIS Integrated Project. The findings done prove the validity of the interoperability methods described. The second part of the contribution describes how to describe standards based building blocks to provide interoperable services for multimedia content management. This definition is based on the analysis of existing content management use cases, from the ones involving less security over multimedia content managed to the ones providing full-featured digital rights management (DRM) (including access control and ciphering techniques) to support secure content management. In this section it is also presented the work done in the research projects AXMEDIS, Musiteca and Culturalive. It is also shown the standardisation work done for MPEG-M, particularly on elementary services and service aggregation. To demonstrate the usage of both technologies a mobile application integrating both MPEG-M and MIPAMS is presented. Furthermore, some conclusions and future work is presented in the corresponding section, together with the refereed publications, which are briefly described in the document. In summary, the work presented can follow different research lines. On the one hand, further study on rights expression languages and policy languages is required as new versions of them have recently appeared. It is worth noting the standardisation of a contract expression language, MPEG-21 CEL, which has also to be further analysed in order to evaluate its interoperability with rights and policy languages. On the other hand, standard initiatives must be followed in order to complete the map of SB3's, considering MPEG standards and also other standards not only related to multimedia but also other application scenarios, like e-health or e-government.

    Triggered by the rise of social networks, community-based image sharing platforms are emerging at an increasing rate. Currently, almost every repository offers a different interaction interface and metadata description format. Unfortunately, this prevents unified and efficient access to these repositories. Consequently, data exchange between systems is often cumbersome. In this context, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG1 (more commonly known as JPEG) initiated the JPSearch framework standardization, which aims to foster the interaction with and among image repositories. The standard focuses on three main cornerstones supporting repository synchronization, search and access, and image collection creation and maintenance. This article discusses the main concepts, parts, and achievements of the JPSearch framework and demonstrates its use through a set of substantial case studies.

    Currently, there are several ways of describing and referring to images in RDF. This ambiguity results in a proliferation of vocabularies for image descriptions, complicating the cross-community data integration of information related to digital images. In addition, there are no standardized guidelines on how to integrate RDF data into the image metadata. Therefore, the JPEG standardization committee has recently initiated some activities to streamline the integration of images in the cloud of Linked Data. One effort is the standardization of an ontology for describing digital images. JPEG aims at providing a technology that enables the uniform description of photos and videos with technical, administrative and semantic metadata compliant with the RDF specification and the principles of Linked Data. Secondly, specifications to integrate RDF data into JPEG images are elaborated. Finally, since descriptions often only apply to a certain part of an image, a last effort is to formalize the specification of regions of interest. In this paper, members of the JPEG committee provide a detailed overview of these ongoing activities. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

    For the last 15 years, there have been various research and great advances in the field of content-based search and retrieval of images. In this paper, we present an overview of the JPSearch Standard, which is a recently published set of international standards providing interoperable framework for image search and sharing. The JPSearch standard is composed of six parts, which are Part 1: System framework and components, Part 2: Registration, identification and management of schema and ontology, Part 3: Query format, Part 4: File format for metadata embedded in image data (JPEG and JPEG 2000), Part 5: Data interchange format between image repositories, Part 6: Reference software. The Part 1 provides motivation and overview of the JPSearch framework. The Part 2 supports interoperability among various metadata specifications and social tagging using the specification of core metadata and translation rule description language. The Part 3 provides powerful image query language for interoperability among multiple image databases. The Part 4 specifies a file format based on JPEG and JPEG 2000 file format in which arbitrary number of metadata description of a image can be embedded. The Part 5 supports interoperability in interchanging images with metadata between image repositories. Finally, the Part 6 provides reference and utility softwares based on which the JPSearch compliant systems can be easily developed. In this paper, summaries and usage examples for each part of the JPSearch standard are presented.

A significant push comes from the mobile visual search topic, due to the widespread proliferation of camera enabled mobile devices. The new scenarios are increasing the urgency of novel solutions for challenging problems such as the efficient coding of compact visual descriptors and the interoperability of distributed visual search query interfaces. Currently, almost every visual search service offers a different retrieval interface and image metadata description format, preventing unified and efficient access. In this context, standardization groups such as ISO/IEC SC29/WG11 (MPEG) and ISO/IEC SC29/WG1 (JPEG) have been working to create unified interfaces for image repositories. In one hand, MPEG provides the ISO/IEC 15938-12 (MPEG Query Format, MPQF), which standardizes a query language for multimedia repositories and has also started an activity for standardizing compact descriptors for visual search (CDVS). On the other hand, JPEG is now finishing the ISO/IEC 24800 (JPSearch), which provides solutions to the image metadata interoperability problem. This paper analyzes how these standardization activities can be combined to satisfy the requirements posed by the mobile visual search scenario, which are their limitations and which are the necessary actions to be taken by the standardization committees in order to overcome them.

To show its use, we present several scenarios where we have successfully integrated it, like distribution of content for digital terrestrial television broadcasting and access to personal health information.

    This paper describes an interoperable Digital Rights Management architecture promoted by the MPEG standardization group in its new standard known as MPEG-M or MPEG Extensible Middleware (MXM). The goal of this standard is to promote the packaging and reusability ofMPEG technologies, and for this it specifies a software middleware platform and a complete set of APIs and protocols. These APIs allow uniformly handling digital content and developing generic multimedia applications, through a set of modules communicated with standard protocols. The MXM standard provides the necessary mechanisms to digitally manage the rights over Intellectual Property, the tools to protect the media and the means to grant the rights enforcement, besides a rich set of libraries to reproduce the content.

    The digital content industry is facing significant challenges. One of the most significant challenges is the Intellectual Property protection. This challenge has been addressed technologically by using Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems that on a first stage ensured the appropriate management over digital content. However, rights management systems, as they are today, are completely non-interoperable, creating immense problems to the digital content final users. Perhaps one of the biggest problems is the fact that the same digital content that is governed by different rights management systems cannot be exchanged between different rights governance systems. This paper presents some of the work that has been performed under the framework of the VISNET-II Network of Excellence (NoE) to address some of the rights management systems interoperability problems. The approach followed by the proposed work consists on the usage of service description and service-oriented architectures as a mean to create a common and interoperable environment between the different systems.

    There are several initiatives working in the definition and implementation of distributed architectures that enable the development of distributed multimedia applications on top of them, while offering Digital Rights Management (DRM) features. In this chapter, the main features of the MPEG Extensible Middleware (MXM) (ISO/IEC, http://mxm.wg11.sc29.org, 2010) and the new Advanced IPTV terminal (AIT) (ISO/IEC, ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29/WG11 N11230, 2010), which together will form a future second edition of the MXM standard (renamed to Multimedia Service Platform Technologies) are presented. On the other hand, the DMAG’s (Distributed Multimedia Applications Group (DMAG), http://dmag.ac.upc.edu, 2010) Multimedia Information Protection and Management System (MIPAMS) (Torres et al., Springer, Heidelberg, 2006) is also presented, highlighting the common ground and differences between MIPAMS and the standards. A set of usage scenarios is also proposed to show how MIPAMS enables the development of applications, on top of it, which deal with the needs of content creators, distributors and consumers according to different business models.

    This paper describes several scenarios for the management of digital media, focusing on electronic publishing from mobile environments. The solution proposed in those scenarios is based on MIPAMS (Multimedia Information Protection And Management System), a service-oriented Digital Rights Management (DRM) platform, which enables the creation, registration and distribution of multimedia content in a secure way, respecting intellectual property rights. The particularity of the mobile scenario with respect to others is the limited capability of mobile devices. A specific use case has been identified for the mobile environment and a new system, based on MIPAMS, has been designed for the electronic publishing environment.

    New mobile devices (pda’s, tablets) permit the implementation of new business models as they are always connected and provide multimedia capabilities for capturing images, videos, music or even conversations. Together with an architecture for the secure management and distribution of multimedia content called MIPAMS, we propose a mobile business model with the implementation of a mobile application based on iOS (Apple operating system for mobile devices) for publishing added value content captured with a mobile device.

    The research around visual search is gaining relevance due to the evolution in the generation and usage of digital images. A signifi cant push comes from the mobile visual search topic, due to the widespread proliferation of camera enabled mobile devices. The new scenarios are increasing the urgency of novel solutions for challenging problems such as the effi cient coding of compact visual descriptors and the interoperability of distributed visual search query interfaces. Currently, almost every visual search service off ers a different retrieval interface and image metadata description format, preventing unified and effi cient access. In this context, standardization groups such as ISO/IEC SC29/WG11 (MPEG) and ISO/IEC SC29/WG1 (JPEG) have been working to create uni fied interfaces for image repositories. In one hand, MPEG provides the ISO/IEC 15938-12 (MPEG Query Format, MPQF), which standardizes a query language for multimedia repositories and has also started an activity for standardizing compact descriptors for visual search (CDVS). On the other hand, JPEG is now finishing the ISO/IEC 24800 (JPSearch), which provides solutions to the image metadata interoperability problem. This paper analyzes how these standardization activities can be combined to satisfy the requirements posed by the mobile visual search scenario, which are their limitations and which are the necessary actions to be taken by the standardization committees in order to overcome them.

    Context-aware applications are becoming very popular as they are a mean of enriching users' experiences in multimedia scenarios. Nevertheless, the acquisition, representation, and protection of contextual information are still open issues that need to be addressed. These are significant topics of interest mainly due to today's growing concern on user privacy, and are particularly relevant in the context of Social Networks. In this paper, we briefly present our work development within the Visnet-II Network of Excellence (NoE) on context acquisition and protection for context-based content adaptation. We identify the sensitive contextual information used within Social Network application scenario, and then specify a suitable privacy model. Finally, we describe how this model could be implemented through the use of the MPEG-21 Rights Expression Language (REL) Standard.

    The present paper describes the design and usage of an Internet medical image search engine based on the queryby-example paradigm and the multimedia standard ISO-15938-12:2008. The system, which allows combining Content Based Information Retrieval (CBIR) techniques such as “query by image” with traditional XML metadata filtering, is applied to annotate and query Optical Biopsies-OB (in the present case Confocal endomicroscopy-CEM). The OB-CEM are taken by endoscopists, not trained in microscopic morphology which is the domain of the surgical pathology. To gain diagnostic confidence the endoscopists could consult the images to a pathologist or could use the system proposed in the paper. That is, to search for similar images to compare the diagnosis.

    Social Networks, as the main axis of Web 2.0, are creating a number of interesting challenges to the research and standardisation communities. In this paper, we analyse the current and future use of access control policies in Social Networks. Subsequently, two main issues are addressed: the interoperability amongst systems using different policy languages and the lack of elements in the existing policy languages when trying to express Social Networks’ access control. In particular, our approach is based on the use of the XACML standard.

    Digital still images are generated, distributed and stored worldwide at an ever increasing rate. Yet, the large number of available metadata description formats prevents consistent and efficient access to image repositories. Standardized solutions for unifying the access and the retrieval of image repositories are therefore strongly needed. The ISO/IEC SC29 WG1 (more commonly known as JPEG) established the JPSearch project, which aims to standardize interfaces of an abstract image retrieval framework. In this context, the paper introduces our contribution consisting of a reference metadata model, which in combination with the JPEG query format improves interoperable image retrieval for users. Second, a transformation rule declaration language for query reformulation is presented, which contributes to interoperability at the repository side.

    Authors of scholarly objects might fear that there is a potential risk that the original material they publish in online sites or that they submit for evaluation to scientific journals or conferences is used by others as their own material. In such cases, it would not be easy for the original authors to prove authorship of the original contribution. In similar circumstances, it is very difficult to prove the authorship or origin of some materials that are being distributed amongst social networks, private or institutional websites or any other means through the Internet, namely documents, papers, images, data, etc. Those materials can be easily plagiarised (e.g. partially or totally translated) and redistributed without any control and with no means to prove authorship. In this context, we propose an online framework for the registration, search, interchange and trade of scholarly objects, which helps to overcome the potential drawbacks of online distribution and publishing. This framework acts as an intellectual property repository and sales point, where people is able to register content and determine the way they want to trade it, while providing innovative search capabilities based on the MPEG Query Format standard [1]. Creative Commons (CC) [2] limitations are identified and overcome by means of a licensing approach that combines Rights Expression Languages and the MPEG-21 Media Value Chain Ontology [3].
