    Breakdown and corona extra-and ultra-high voltage tests are expensive, timeconsuming and require large and extremely costly high-voltage halls, of which there are very few worldwide. Some of these limiting requirements may be minimized by using test cages and by applying reduced-scale tests. In this work the feasibility of performing breakdown reduced-scale tests combined with the use of test cages is analyzed. For this purpose a three-dimensional finite elements based methodology is introduced to determine the geometric dimensions of the test cage in order to adjust the test voltage according to the allowable output voltage of a conventional high-voltage laboratory. To validate the findings of this work, breakdown tests of a full-scale 500 kVRMS substation connector and a 1:3 reduced-scale model using test cages are conducted in a highvoltage laboratory, which maximum allowable output voltage is of 125 kVRMS. Results from this work show that by using appropriately designed test cages and scaled versions of the test samples the results may be scaled with high accuracy.

    The adequate characterization of the magnetization behavior of high-temperature superconductors is essential to improve the performance of superconducting devices such as motors and electrical generators. Currently, commercial finite element programs allow to analyze the response of YBCO superconducting materials, the currents induced, temperature variations, and even the mechanical stress during the magnetization process. Using a commercial finite element program, we analyze the response to a ZFC magnetization process of a YBCO pellet, which forms part of the superconducting rotor of an HTS electric motor by using pulsed magnetizing field. In this work, we report on the distribution of trapped field, critical currents, and thermal evolution in a 2D axisymmetric configuration.

    Outdoor substations placed in coastal areas are affected by saline environments. In the technical literature it is found extensive information regarding insulations problems in presence of saline environments [1]. The accumulation of salts and other contaminants promotes the onset of partial discharges on the devices subjected to very high voltages. Insulators are also affected by this phenomenon. While rainfall has a cleaning effect on the insulator surface, humidity enhances the corrosion effect and degrades the performance of insulation [2], favouring onset conditions for partial discharge. Corrosion due to saline environments or dirt increases the roughness of the insulator surface, thus facilitating the appearance of partial discharges [3]. It is well known that the air pollution has a great impact on metals corrosion. Chloride ions are common in coastal environments, because seawater acts as a source of air mineralization. Deposition of chloride ions on metal surfaces intensifies metallic corrosion, thus degrading the conductor surface [4]. In this work the behaviour of a 765 kVRMS AC (line-to-line voltage) outdoor substation connector is analyzed when operating under both dry conditions and under wet saline environments by means of three-dimensional finite elements simulations (3D-FEM). FEM simulations show that the electric field strength in the connector surroundings does not exceed the electric breakdown strength for air under clean and dry atmospheric conditions when energized at its rated voltage, 765 kVRMS AC (line-to-line). These results are corroborated by means of experimental measurements carried out in a high-voltage laboratory. Both, the laboratory tests and the 3D-FEM simulations performed in this study concluded that the corona onset voltage is approximately 980 kVRMS AC (line-to-line voltage). Additionally, 3D-FEM simulations allow detecting the connector weakest points regarding to electrical stress. Hence, this software allows redesigning the connector geometry to optimize its performance, thus minimizing the corona occurrence risk and their associated unwanted effects. Additionally, FEM simulations performed under a saline atmosphere were carried out by including a thin conductive saline moisture layer acting as a wetting film on the connector surface.     The object of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of railway interoperability and safety in Europe in the period 1991-2011. This pretends to assess what has been the legislative process at EU level in the last 20 years. This analysis looks for to determine whether it has been established the strong enough bases to achieve fully interoperable Trans-European Railway Network in a reasonable time, with uniform security features. The second aspect is to determine those points that should be corrected and improved, or simply addressed, to accelerate the integration process. A common feature of the rail networks in the European countries is their strong national focus in regard to Railway traffic rules and technical standards. This leads to specific products often developed and implemented by the national industry. This has raised a strong dependence of the rail networks on the local suppliers. Furthermore in most cases this carry out an incompatibility of these networks with the networks of neighbouring countries. To illustrate this situation it is only necessary to remember the different gauges in national networks (1,668 mm in the Iberian Peninsula, 1,520 in Russia, Finland, Baltic republics, 1,435 mm in the other European countries) to which must be added the numerous narrow gauges regional and urban networks. Another good example is the different supply voltages: 1,500 V dc, 3,000 V dc, 25 kV 50 Hz, 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz, which should add the 625 V dc, 750 V dc, 1,200 V cc, used in trams and regional rail systems. In the field of railway signalling, more than six different and incompatible systems exit. As we show in this document there are hundreds of other parameters that are different from one network to another: the height of the overhead line, the height of the platforms, the gauges an so on and so forth. The lack of interoperability, affects decisively to the creation of a European single market in rail transport for both: goods and passengers, which prevents private (or public) rail undertakings to give trans-national services and create a single market. The thesis focuses on the study of the directives relate to the interoperability and railway safety, and the technical specifications for interoperability (TSI). It leaves for future analysis the detailed studies European standards being developed for the technical harmonization of each subsystem parts. According to the author when the concept of interoperability was lunched in 1996, probably it was thought that the technical harmonization would be much easier. However, when it was analyzed in depth it was found a large number of discrepancies between the technical characteristics of each network raised. These parameters such as width and height of the pantographs, the stresses of the overhead contact wires, the length of the neutral zones, the height of platforms, the different kinematic and dynamic gauges and a long list of different parameters, made it impossible, in practice, the movement of trains across borders in a generalized manner in a short term. Finally it was recognized the fact that, for achieving real harmonized lines, it would be necessary to invest a huge amount of money not justify by the cost-benefit analyzes. The Thesis concludes that is necessary to put in force more strong Technical Specifications of Interoperability that leave less degree of freedom to the Member states: determining a single objective parameter value, trying to reduce the permanent specific cases and solving and reducing the list of open points.

    El propósito de esta tesis es analizar el desarrollo de la interoperabilidad y seguridad ferroviaria en Europa en el periodo comprendido entre 1991-2011. La intención es evaluar cuál ha sido el proceso legislativo a nivel de la UE durante los últimos 20 años. Este análisis tratará de determinar si ha sido establecido desde una base suficientemente sólida para obtener una Red Ferroviaria Trans-Europea dentro de un periodo razonable, con uniformidad de instalaciones de seguridad. El segundo aspecto sería determinar aquellos puntos que deben ser corregidos o mejorados, o sencillamente re-examinados para acelerar el proceso de integración. Un aspecto común a las redes ferroviarias de los países europeos es su fuerte énfasis nacional en lo que respecta a normas de circulación ferroviaria y reglamentación técnica. Esta realidad conduce a la creación e implementación de productos específicos por parte de la industrial nacional. Esto ha llevado a una fuerte dependencia de las redes ferroviarias de suministradores locales. Asimismo, en la mayoría de los casos, esto lleva a la incompatibilidad de estas redes con las redes de países vecinos. Para ilustrar esta situación, solamente es necesario recordar los distintos anchos de vía en redes nacionales (1.668 mm en la península ibérica, 1.520 en Rusia, Finlandia y las repúblicas del Báltico, 1.435 mm en otros países europeos) al que habría que añadir las numerosas redes de vías de ancho estrecho regionales y urbanas. Otro buen ejemplo serían los distintos suministros de tensión: 1.500 V dc, 3.000 V dc, 25 kV 50 Hz, 15 kV 2/3 Hz, al que habría que añadir las de 625 V dc, 750 V dc, 1.200 V cc, utilizados en tranvías y redes de trenes regionales. En el ámbito de la señalización ferroviaria, existen más de seis sistemas distintos e incompatibles. Tal y como demostramos en este documento, hay cientos de parámetros distintos que difieren de una red a otra: la altura de la línea suspendida, la altura de andenes, los anchos, etc, etc. La falta de interoperabilidad afecta decisivamente a la creación de un mercado común europeo de transporte ferroviario para tanto mercancías como pasajeros, lo cual impide que empresas privadas (o públicas) ferroviarias puedan ofrecer servicios transnacionales y crear un solo mercado. Esta tesis se enfoca en el estudio de la reglamentación relacionada con la interoperabilidad y seguridad ferroviaria, y las especificaciones técnicas para la interoperabilidad (TSI). Deja para análisis futuros el estudio detallado de los estándares europeos bajo desarrollo para la armonización técnica de cada parte de subsistema. Según el autor, cuando el concepto de la interoperabilidad fue lanzada en 1996, probablemente se pensara que la armonización técnica sería mucho más sencilla. Sin embargo, al analizarlo en detalle se descubrió que aparecían un amplio número de discrepancias entras las características de cada red. Estos parámetros, como el ancho y alto de los pantógrafos, las tensiones de los hilos de contacto suspendidos, la longitud de zonas neutras, el alto de andenes, las diferentes propiedades cinemáticas y el ancho dinámico y una amplia lista de distintos parámetros hacían imposible en la práctica la circulación de trenes más allá de sus fronteras de forma generalizada a corto plazo. Por fin se reconoció el hecho de que para conseguir líneas verdaderamente armonizadas sería necesario invertir una enorme cantidad de dinero que no era justificable en los análisis de coste-beneficio. La tesis concluye que es necesario poner en vigencia especificaciones técnicas de interoperabilidad más fuertes que dejen menos libertad a los países miembros: determinar un solo valor de parámetro objetivo, y tratar de reducir los casos específicos permanentes y resolver y reducir el número de puntos abiertos.

    El present treball, culmina un període de recerca que va començar amb l’observació i mesura dels rendiments dels primers vehicles elèctrics del mercat contemporani i de les tècniques d’optimització energètica aeroespacial. Aquesta tesi recull i recopila les conclusions de tesis i projectes de final de carrera dirigides pel Dr. Ricard Bosch, esdevenint un graó més de la cadena cap al vehicle elèctric que ell mateix persegueix des de fa 30 anys.. L’estudi se centra al territori català per limitacions de desplaçaments i de contactes industrials, analitzant les capacitats de formació, les tècniques, les industrials tot i que els mercats potencials són mundials. Durant l’estudi, els experiments realitzats sobre propulsions elèctriques s’han realitzat en plataformes privades pel que se’n manté la confidencialitat del producte final, no necessariament terrestre. Finalment es dibuixen les opcions que donarien continuïtat a la tesi i les oportunitats de negoci més factibles dins del territori català.

    This work culminates a period of research which began with the observation and performance measurement of the first modern electric vehicles together with the aerospace energy optimization techniques. The thesis collects and compiles the findings of theses and final projects directed by Dr. Ricard Bosch, becoming one more step in his evolution chain towards the electric vehicle. The study focuses on the Catalan territory, due to travelling expenses and industry contacts, analyzing its skills, training, techniques, industry and the potential global markets. During the study, experiments were performed on electric propulsion platforms for private companies so the confidentiality of the final product is kept, and are not necessarily ground vehicles. Finally, this document outline the options that would give continuity to the thesis and the most feasible business opportunities within the Catalan territory.

    The magnetization of superconducting pellets is a worth point in the development of trapped flux superconducting motors. Experimental and simulated data have been reported extensively according to the framework of one or several pulses of a homogeneous magnetizing field applied to a pellet or a set of pellets. In case of cylindrical rotors of low power motors with radial excitation, however, the use of the copper coils to produce the starting magnetization of the pellets produces a highly inhomogeneous magnetic field which cannot be reduced to a 2D standard model. In this work we present an analysis of the magnetization of the superconducting cylindrical rotor of a small motor by using a commercial FEM program, being the rotor magnetized by the working copper coils of the motor. The aim of the study is a report of the magnetization obtained and theheat generated in the HTSC pellets.

    La trompa d'aigua o trompa dels Pirineus és el giny hidropneumàtic pel qual s'introduïa aire al forn en el procediment català d'obtenció directa del ferro a partir dels seus minerals, o de la Farga Catalana. En aquest treball es recopilen, analitzen i valoren totes les referències bibliogràfiques sobre la trompa d'aigua a què s'ha pogut accedir, des de les més antigues del s. XVI, fins a les més modernes.Més anllà de les variants geogràfiques, es distingeixen diferents tipus de trompes segons el mecanismo que usen per mesclar l'aire i l'aigua a la capçalera dels arbres. Amb el pas del temps es van anar introduint algunes innovacions que en van millorar el rendiment, com la posada en càrrega de l'escanyall o la immersió de la caixa dels vents.Es presenten altres aplicacions del mateix principi funcional, com la trompa de buit, el compressor hidràulic d'aire, la bomba d'elevació d'aigua per emulsió amb aire, i altres aplicacions del flux bifàsic.S'ha construït un model pilot de trompa d'aigua a escala 1:3 en el laboratori del Departament d'Enginyeria Elèctrica (DEE) de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) i se n'ha modelitzat el funcionament. Segons mostra aquest anàlisi teòric, els artesans de les trompes de la farga catalana van aconseguir un aprofitament òptim d'aquest giny. Sense donar una explicació científica als fenòmens que s'hi produeixen, es va arribar a un domini suficient de les trompes per competir durant alguns segles amb la combinació de la roda hidràulica i les les manxes. Aquesta màquina té la simplicitat i i versatilitat adequades per adaptar-se al procés de la farga catalana, i aconseguir a la vegada que el procés s'adapti a la trompa.No va ser fins a finals del s. XIX que es va aconseguir augmentar el rendiment d'aquest tipus de màquines fins als límits que fixa la mecànica de fluids, amb el desenvolupament i construcció de compressors hidràulics d'aire de grans dimensions. Amb l'augment de la pressió de l'aire i la recuperació de l'energia de l'aigua de la caixa dels vents, en forma d'energia potencial, s'aconsegueixen rendiments de conversió de l'energia hidràulica a pneumàtica de fins al 85%, valor molt superior al 15% que devien tenir de promig les trompes d'aigua de les fargues. Malgrat els avantatges de tractar-se d'una compressió isotèrmica, apareixen altres fenòmens secundaris com la dissolució de l'aire en l'aigua, que empobreix en oxigen l'aire comprimit.Amb la intenció de recuperar l'energia del doll d'aigua de la trompa, s'ha construït i assajat un prototip de màquina elèctrica especial amb entreferro inundable que podria integrar la turbina o hèlix a l'interior del rotor. Es tracta d'una màquina d'inducció, amb un alt número de pols, de baixes revolucions, bifàsica, de molt baixa tensió i alta corrent per espira, debanat de simple capa i un conductor per ranura i fase. S'utilitza la connexió Scott per connectar-lo a un sistema de tensions trifàsic, i dos bobines toroïdals per a l'adaptació d'impedàncies. Per primer cop en aquest tipus de màquines s'ha superat el 50% de lliscament en els assajos a temperatura ambient.

    The water trompe or trompe of the Pyrenees is the hydro-pneumatic widget which was used to introduce air in the bloomery furnace of the Catalan Forge, it's to say, the catalan method for obtaining iron from his ores. In this document, all the founded bibliographic references to the water trompe have been collected, analyzed and evaluated, from the oldest, dating from XVIth century, to the modern ones.Beyond geographical variations, there are different types of trompes according to the mechanism used to mix air and water at the top of the trees. In process of time, some innovations were introduced that improved performance, as the flooding of the entrance of the trees or the submergence of the windbox.Other applications of the same functional principle are presented, as the vacuum trompe, the hydraulic air compressor, the airlift water pump, and other applications of two-phase flow.A pilot model of the water trompe has been made in a 1:3 scale, at the laboratory of the Department of Electric Engineering (DEE) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), and his operation has been modelled. Theoretical analysis shows that the craftsmen of the Catalan Forge trompes achieved optimal use of this widget. Without giving a scientific explanation for phenomena that occur, it was a sufficient command of the trompes to compete for centuries with the combination of a water wheel and the bellows. This machine is enough simple and versatile to adapt to the Catalan Forge process, and at the same time, to achieve adapt the process to the trompe.It was not until the end of the XIXth century that the performance of such machines was increased to the limits set by fluid mechanics, with the development and construction of large hydraulic air compressors.With the increased air pressure and the recovery of energy from the water outgoing the windbox, in form of potential energythe winds in the form of potential energy, yields of 85% of energy conversion from hydraulic to pneumatic were achieved, a value much higher than the 15% that trompes of forges could have in average. Despite the advantages of dealing with an isothermal compression, there are other secondary phenomena such as air dissolving in water, with the result of reducing oxigen concentration in compressed air respect atmospheric air.With the intention of recovering the energy of the water jet of the trompe, a prototype of a special electric machine has been built and tested. It could integrate the turbine or propeller into the rotor, with a flooded air gap. It's an induction type machine, of a high number of poles, low revolutions, biphasic, very low voltage and high current per turn, with a simple layer winding and only one conductor per slot and phase.Scott connection is used to feed the machine from a three-phase system of voltage. Two toroidal coils are used for impedance adaptation. For the fist time on such type of machines, a sliding of 50% has been axceeded in tests at room temperature.

    Aquesta tesi explora i estudia l'estructura, dinàmica i evolució de la xarxa de transmissió d'electricitat des de la perspectiva dels sistemes complexos, essent el seu principal objectiu la definició de nous criteris i eines per ajudar a un disseny més eficient i sostenible de la xarxa de transmissió de potència. Per assolir aquest objectiu, s'han estudiat i analitzat dos conjunts de dades. D'una banda, la xarxa corresponent a la Unió per la Coordinació de Transport d'Electricitat (UCTE), que associa a la majoria dels operadors de xarxes elèctriques nacionals de l'Europa continental amb la finalitat de coordinar la producció i la demanda anual d'uns 2.300 TWh d'energia per 450 milions de clients de 24 països diferents. D'altra banda, l'evolució històrica de la xarxa de transport del Gestionaire du Réseau du Transport d'Electricité (RTE), responsable de l'explotació, manteniment i desenvolupament de la xarxa nacional mésgran d'Europa, la xarxa francesa de transport d'electricitat.Els resultats obtinguts fins al moment mostren diferències estadísticament significatives en l'estructura de les xarxes elèctriques, definint clarament comportaments dinàmics particulars que ens permeten segregar les xarxes europees en dos grups, a saber, fràgil i robust. Les xarxes fràgils es caracteritzen per les topologies més estructurades, mallades i no a l'atzar, mentre que les topològiques de caràcter més robust, contraintuïtivament, tenen estructures molts més aleatòries. Les conseqüències d'aquestes troballes per a la sostenibilitat de les xarxes d'infraestructures són importants en termes de cost i avaluació d'impactes i riscos. Es presenta així mateix un model per a l'evolució temporal i espacial d'una xarxa elèctrica. En aquest sentit, suggerim que la fragilitat topològica global augmenta quan es consideren accions de connectivitat de caire local a fi d'augmentar la fiabilitat de la xarxa a escala regional.Aquests resultats suggereixen la necessitat d'aplicar nous mètodes de disseny de la xarxa elèctrica així com noves eines amb capacitat per incloure aquests nous aspectes topològics en l'avaluació de l'eficiència i la fiabilitat de lamateixa.

    This Thesis explores the structure, dynamics and evolution of the electricity transmission network from a complexsystems perspective, its main objective being the definition of new criteria and tools to help to design a more efficientand sustainable transmission power grid. In doing so, two data sets have been explored and analyzed. On one hand,the Union for the Coordination of Transport of Electricity (UCTE) network, which associates most of the continentalEurope national power grid operators in order to coordinate the production and demand of some annual 2300 TWh ofenergy and 450 million customers from 24 countries. On the other hand, the Gestionaire du Réseau du Transportd'Electricité (RTE) transport network historical evolution, responsible for operating, maintaining and developing thebiggest national network in Europe, the French electricity transmission network.The results obtained so far show statistically significant dissimilarities in the structure of the power grids, clearlydefining and enclosing particular dynamic behaviors that enable us to segregate European networks in two sets,namely fragile and robust. Fragile networks are characterized by meshed topologies and non random structures whilerobust ones share more randomly generated topologies. The consequences of these finding for the sustainability ofinfrastructure networks are significant in terms of cost and risk assessment. A model for the evolution of a power gridnetwork is also presented. We suggest that global topological fragility increases when local connectivity schemes areadapted in order to increase local reliability.These outcomes appeal for new power grid design methods and tools capable to include these new topologicalaspects into efficiency and reliability assessments
