    The focus of this volume is comprised of the fundamentals, models, and information technologies (IT) methods and tools for disaster prediction and mitigation. A more detailed list of topics includes mathematical and computational modeling of processes leading to or producing disasters, modeling of disaster effects, IT means for disaster mitigation, including data mining tools, knowledge-based and expert systems for use in disaster circumstances, GIS-based systems for disaster prevention and mitigation, and equipment for disaster-prone areas. A specific type or class of disasters (natural or human-made), however will not be part of the main focus of this work. Instead, this book was conceived to offer a comprehensive, integrative view on disasters, seeking to determine what various disasters have in common. Because disaster resilience and mitigation involve humans, societies, and cultures, not only technologies and economic models, special attention was paid in this volume to gain a comprehensive view on these issues, as a foundation of the IT tool design.

    Transdisciplinary Models and Applications investigates a variety of programming languages used in validating and verifying models in order to assist in their eventual implementation. This book will explore different methods of evaluating and formalizing simulation models, enabling computer and industrial engineers, mathematicians, and students working with computer simulations to thoroughly understand the progression from simulation to product, improving the overall effectiveness of modeling systems.

    In this chapter, the authors present a formal model of the Anesthesia Unit and Surgical Wards (UAPQ) of a Chilean hospital. The objective was to document and to understand its operation, to assist hospital management and to facilitate its simula - tion. The model was built with Specification and Description Language (SDL). This methodology was used because it allows the design of a model that represents the system in a graphical, modular, and standard way. Our design contains the follow - ing agents: the system, 11 blocks, and 52 processes. The blocks and the processes describe the clinical and administrative activities. The environment of the UAPQ model contains 3 components: clinical services, emergency units, and support units.

    Firefighting resource management is crucial to contain and extinguish wildfires. Resource optimization in wildfire containment can help to reduce the dangers and risks to both human (firemen and area inhabitants) and natural environment. The use of simulation to predict wildfire evolution combined with optimization techniques can lead to an optimal resource deployment and management to minimize natural and human risks. This article proposes a simulation and optimization architecture; a well-defined data format to represent firefighting resources and an experimental platform to simulate wildfire spread, wildfire containment, resource dispatching and management and resource optimization. The simulation and optimization environment will be tested in the Catalonia region (Spain) in collaboration with Catalan Firefight Department.

    In this paper we explore how we can use Specification and Description Language, to represent simulation models that make an intensive use of geographical information, like environmental simulation models. The purpose is to perform a complete unambiguous, graphical and formal representation of a wildfire simulation model. Specification and Description Language is a modern object oriented language that allows the definition of distributed systems. It has focused on the modeling of reactive, state/event driven systems, and has been standardized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in the Z.100. Thanks to the graphical representation of the simulation model, the interaction between the experts that usually come from different areas is simplified. Also, due to the unambiguous and modular nature of the language, all the details of the model can be validated by personnel that do not necessarily are used with programming languages or simulation infrastructures.

    This paper presents experiences obtained from our involvement in the development of industrial simulation projects. Some important, common questions are covered, such as the need to define model behavior using a conceptual model, the problem of choosing the appropriate tool to code the model, and the validation and verification process required. As we will see, the scope of applicability of simulation is broad and the tools are therefore diverse. A clear understanding of the objectives of the simulation, the client’s aims and the resources at our disposal are key issues that often determine the success of a simulation project.

    The Newspaper Production/Distribution Problem (NDP) involves a perishable good. Newspaper publishers cannot print the news sections of newspapers in advance, as they must be up to date. Additionally, delivery must be completed before morning commuting starts in metropolitan areas. Therefore, delivery delays at the printing plant are not acceptable, as they cause significant disturbances to the distribution chain. In this paper, we analyse the impact of using a second transelevator on the performance of a printing plant's automatic warehouse with the aim to avoid delivery delays to the printing press.

    Este documento resume el trabajo realizado por la Mancomunitat de Municipis de l’Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) para la difusión por Internet de la información cartográfica que generan y la colaboración con la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) para migrar el callejero de los municipios que componen el AMB a formato OpenStreetMap (OSM). La difusión gratuita por Internet de la mayor parte, los más utilizados, de los productos que componen el catálogo de Cartografía de la MMAMB pretende facilitar a todos los interesados el acceso a esta infraestructura tan valiosa. Se ha desarrollado también una exportación de los datos que conforman la “Guia de carrers de l’AMB” a OSM. Los objetivos de esta exportación son: la evaluación de la cesión de datos públicos a OSM; el establecimiento de los protocolos necesarios para usar datos procedentes de OSM; la creación de un portal web usando la tecnología de OSM para que los diferentes municipios puedan realizar la edición distribuida de datos cartográficos de AMB; y el uso de herramientas libres para la renderización de mapas, tanto en tiempo real como diferido.

    iLabRS is a remote laboratory developed in Telecom BCN, the Telecom and Electronics Engineering School of the UPC with the key participation of a Secondary Education Technology teacher. Students and teachers can access to real experiments in the electronics and physics areas using a web browser. The remote experiments have been designed to partially cover the technology curriculum in the last two high school years with a triple goal: (1) to enrich the set of laboratory experiences available in High Schools, (2) to provide a clear example of the possibilities of internet-based technologies and (3) to promote the interaction between University and Secondary Education. Currently, there are 13 different experiments available. A pilot evaluation experience was carried out, in collaboration with 7 High Schools and around 100 students participating. In the experience assessment, the students gave a mark of 3.8/5 and the teachers of 4.4/5.

    In this paper we analyze the impact of using a second transelevator in the performance of a printing plant automatic warehouse. A direct previous attempt to use the second transelevator was not successful since both transelevators were competing for the same physical space, therefore, a simulation study was proposed as a non intrusive way to study and propose a better working configuration.

    During de last years, the transportation industry has involved in important new challenges to cope the changes in production and logistical systems. Just-In-Time procurement and quick and efficient consumer response are some of the reasons why the transportation industry has recognized the need to incorporate new information technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and Internet. These technologies can enhance the capabilities to optimize the transport operations since they provide the necessary information required to perform real-time decision making. This paper presents the laboratory environment that is being developed for the design of real-time decision tools for the transportation industry.
