    In order to provide another way of reducing the stock of used tyres and polyvinyl chloride waste, a new material is developed and studied. Formulation includes a matrix constituted by a compound of recycled polyvinyl chloride with plasticized polyvinyl chloride and a reinforcement of ground tyre rubber. Acoustic and mechanical properties of different compositions of polyvinyl chloride/ground tyre rubber were tested in order to determine their suitability for applications fulfilling industry requirements. Sound absorption has been analyzed, showing interesting results at frequencies higher than 2500¿Hz. The obtained values are found to be depending on the thickness of the sample, the content of the ground tyre rubber and the existence of gaps, pores and voids either between layers or in the interphase between the matrix and reinforcement. From the study of the mechanical properties, we may observe that the ground tyre rubber act as filler, improving stiffness of polyvinyl chloride/ground tyre rubber composites with an increase of Young Modulus. The tensile strength, elongation at break and toughness decrease slowly. The decrease of these mechanical properties is observed to be lower than in the case of composites made by using high-density polyethylene as a matrix.

    The primary advantages of electrospun membranes include the ability to obtain very thin fibers that are on the order of magnitude of several nanometers with a considerable superficial area and the possibility for these membranes to be manipulated and processed for many different applications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and quantify the transport mechanisms that control the release of drugs from polymer-based sandwich membranes produced using the electrospinning processes. These electrospun membranes were composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) because it is one of the most promising biodegradable polymers due to its mechanical properties, thermoplastic processability and biological properties, such as its biocompatibility and biodegradability. The transport mechanism that controls the drug delivery was evaluated via the release kinetics of a bioactive agent in physiological serum, which was used as a corporal fluid simulation. To describe the delivery process, mathematical models, such as the Power Law, the classical Higuchi equation and an approach to Fick's Second Law were used. Using the applied mathematical models, it is possible to conclude that control over the release of the drug is significantly dependent on the thickness of the membrane rather than the concentration of the drug.

    Mathematical drug release modelling of biodegradable polymeric systems by microencapsulation technology in textiles has not progressed much yet, because it is generally too complex. The release of a therapeutic agent from a formulation applied to the skin surface and its transport to the systemic circulation has a multistep process. The transdermal drug released is a feasible administration route for powerful, low-molecular weight therapeutic agents, which has to be accurate in their control of drug distribution. Moreover, many drugs are difficult to handle because they must be delivered slowly over a prolonged period to have a beneficial effect. In the present work, several examples of practical applications of mathematical models, developed through experimental drug release data, are given. For those involved in the design and development of biodegradable drug delivery systems, it will be useful to choose the generic mathematical model for several specific drug release problems. This transport model is based on the appropriate solution to Fick's second law of diffusion and can be used to explain drug release kinetics into this complex biological membrane (skin). Microspheres containing active principles were prepared using a solvent evaporation procedure with poly(vinyl alcohol) as surfactant in the external aqueous phase. Several biodegradable microspheres of biocompatible polymers, taken as delivery systems for active agent, have been studied. Polymers were PLGA (Poly(lactide-co-glycolide)) and PCL (poly(e-caprolactone)). The active compounds chosen were cosmetics and drugs, such as gallic acid, caffeine and ibuprofen. The microspheres obtained were characterized by the measure of encapsulation efficiency. The surface morphology and chemical structure of the micro particles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Nanosizer was used for particle size distribution. The application of the microspheres in the fabrics was carried out using Pad-Dry technique, since it is a simple and efficient technology and its working conditions are harmless to the system. The drug release system was analyzed, through samples of the treated fibre (cotton, polyamide, acrylic and polyester) in order to study the drug delivery behaviour in different media, deionized water and physiological saline (T=37ºC). The skin penetration profile by in vitro technique for different active principles was determined using pigskin. The release experiments are performed resorting to the Franz Diffusion cells apparatus (Lara-Spiral, Courtenon, France) consisting of two thermostatic chambers, the upper donor and the lower receptor chamber, divided by a skin biopsy. The main objective of this study is to create smart textiles which allow a controlled drug release for any active compound/substance. Such objective will allow the control of the textiles drug release in such a way that the active compound is released in the right quantity, at the right time and at the right place. The present study has shown that the main objective has been successfully achieved. According to that, microencapsulation applied on fabrics can be considered as a good controlled release system. As a result, the project reached to a general kinetic model using smart textiles as a mass transport system through the skin.

    En esta comunicación se resumen los resultados del proyecto europeo REBEL elaborado por 5 universidades europeas. REBEL es un proyecto de e-learning en el que se ha creado una plataforma de aprendizaje colaborativo en la que las materias, agrupadas en módulos, se comparten y revisan por todos los participantes de cada módulo. La temática está dedicada a la gestión responsable, a la idea de “Green Corporative” y más ampliamente, a la promoción de la sostenibilidad. La colaboración entre las universidades participantes se basa en la producción conjunta de contenidos. El sistema de producción debe asegurar, el desarrollo futuro de materiales tras la finalización del proyecto. Se trata de ofrecer una plataforma de creación de una comunidad que permita el intercambio de ideas, de producción de materiales que perdure y crezca entre entes interesados en las temáticas del proyecto.

    Vivim en un món de color. Tot té un color. El fet que tinguem receptors tan específics per a l’estímul del color ens confirma la importància que té per als éssers humans. Responem al color, de manera activa o passiva, en totes les nostres accions. El nostre creixement, la pressió sanguínia, la temperatura corporal, els models del son, etc., es veuen afectats per les ones de llum. El color no afecta només el cos, sinó també les emocions, els estats d’ànim i les facultats mentals. Tots utilitzem el color d’una manera personal. Creem un ambient cromàtic instintiu quan elegim roba d’un determinat color o certs colors per a casa nostra o per al nostre jardí. L’impacte del color sobre les persones és múltiple, encara que la majoria de les reaccions que provoca són inconscients. Gràcies a la comprensió de les sensacions del color, les emocions que se’ls associen i els seus efectes psicològics i fisiològics es poden seleccionar els tons apropiats per a la indumentària, la decoració, l’entorn de treball, etcètera. Per a cada cultura el llenguatge del color té un significat particular, concret i identificatiu. L’ull humà és sensible a la llum reflectida pels materials. Aquesta informació proporcionada pels receptors oculars és percebuda com a color pel cervell. Finalment, el color indueix sensacions o emocions associades que normalment tenen una expressió semàntica, com per exemple color alegre, trist, elegant, etc. Aquest fenomen s’ha denominat emoció associada al color. Amb el coneixement científic d’aquestes emocions associades al color, els dissenyadors de nous productes podran seleccionar-ne un per transmetre certes sensacions i intencions en els seus dissenys. Convencionalment, la selecció del color en el disseny de productes es basa en la preferència subjectiva dels dissenyadors. La forma tradicional de comunicació entre els dissenyadors i els tintorers i estampadors és una descripció oral abstracta i normalment confusa. Els científics i tècnics del color tenen com a camp d’estudi la percepció de la llum i del color des d’un punt de vista físic, mentre que els psicòlegs investiguen el color des de la percepció i les sensacions i emocions que produeix. La relació entre els paràmetres físics del color i l’emoció que produeix és molt important, però no és gens coneguda i ha estat molt poc estudiada aplicant una metodologia científica. El propòsit d’aquesta tesi és examinar i avaluar quantitativament els efectes psicològics del color, mitjançant la valoració visual de mostres de tèxtils de diferents colors; és a dir, l’estudi de les emocions associades al color en els éssers humans i la seva quantificació utilitzant les especificacions normalitzades CIE per al color. La valoració de les emocions associades al color s’ha de fer utilitzant escales semàntiques diferencials, en aquest cas parells de paraules oposades que defineixen emocions associades al color. L’emoció associada al color, a causa precisament de la seva naturalesa psicològica, pot estar influenciada per molts factors, com per exemple la cultura, l’idioma, el clima, el sexe, l’edat, etc. Per minimitzar les influències de la nacionalitat, la cultura o la tradició, els models matemàtics que representen la correlació entre les emocions associades al color i els valors colorimètrics s’han de deduir de les valoracions visuals obtingudes per observadors de cultures diferents, cercant si existeix un sol model general o bé si per a cada cultura o per a cada idioma n’hi ha un d’específic. Aquest estudi se centra en observadors de parla hispànica. L’expressió de les paraules espanyoles per a la caracterització de l’emoció associada al color s’ha d’ordenar en els espais de color de Munsell i del CIELab. El fet de quantificar les emocions associades al color mitjançant valors numèrics del sistema colorimètric CIE millorarà significativament la comunicació entre dissenyadors, tintorers, estampadors, consumidors, etc…

    Colour has played an important role in human life. In fact, colour can influence human emotions or feelings. Colour can be defined by semantic words describing the characteristics of colours and human’s emotional responses on it (colour emotion index). The relationship between colour and emotion is very complex. This thesis investigates the relationship between colour emotion and its physical properties. Relations between physical and perceptual colour parameters are very important and quantification of colour emotion can be used mainly in industry, fashion and environmental design (architecture, decoration and so on). This thesis investigates the relationship between a physical point of view of colorimetric characteristics in CIELab colour space and a psychological and emotional perception of this colour. Samples were evaluated on the basis of seven emotion variables by observers from four different geographical groups (Spain, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand) in the psychophysical experiment, resulting in a Color Emotion Index (CEI) and Colour Emotion Formulae (CEF). The analysis shows that CEI was mainly related to Chroma, Lightness and Hue, and it was concluded that Chroma and Lightness (especially Chroma) were the most important factors on colour emotion, while the influences of Hue and cultural background were limited. So, the almost coincidence between numerical results (correlation coefficients and factor analysis) of the four multicultural studies, suggest that it may be possible to define a Colour Emotion Space (CES) with a limited number of factors or parameters. In that way it would be able to predict human’s emotional response on colours with instrumental tools. Knowing the quantitative equations through statistical analysis for estimating the relationship between colour and emotions it would be able to develop a computer system that, using the defined equations, should it be possible to define emotional coloured products in industry.

    El color ha jugado un importante papel en la vida humana. De hecho, el color puede influenciar las emociones y los sentimientos humanos. El color puede describirse mediante términos semánticos (palabras) que describen las características de los colores y las respuestas emocionales del color (Índice de Emoción del Color). La relación entre el color y la emoción que provoca es muy compleja. Esta tesis investiga la relación entre la emoción que provoca el color y sus propiedades físicas. La relación entre los parámetros físicos y de percepción del color es muy importante y el cálculo de la emoción provocada por el color puede utilizarse principalmente en la industria, moda y diseño de ambientes (arquitectura, decoración, etc …). Esta tesis investiga la relación entre las características del color desde un punto de vista físico mediante el espacio de color CIELab y la percepción psicológica y emocional. En el ensayo psicofísico se evaluaron muestras de color, mediante siete pares de emociones, por individuos de cuatro países diferentes (España, Hong Kong, Japón y Tailandia) dando como resultado el Índice de Emoción del Color (CEI) y las fórmulas descriptivas de las emociones generadas por le color (CEF). El análisis muestra que el CEI depende principalmente de los parámetros del croma y de la luminosidad (especialmente el croma), mientras que el tono y la influencia cultural son minoritarias. Así pues, la práctica coincidencia de los resultados numéricos obtenidos (coeficientes de correlación y factores de análisis) para los cuatro estudios multiculturales realizados sugiere que es posible definir un espacio CEI, como respuesta a la emoción producida por el color, con un número limitado de factores o parámetros. De esta forma será posible predecir respuestas emocionales de los colores por medios instrumentales. Si a través de análisis estadísticos sobre la relación entre los colores y las emociones que éstos provocan podemos conocer sus ecuaciones cuantitativas, será posible desarrollar un software con ecuaciones aplicadas a la industria y sus productos desde un punto de vista de las emociones que provocan los colores utilizados.

    This doctoral thesis studies the physical properties of polymeric composite materials, with the addition of ground tire rubber particles (GTR) and the use of any of these compounds for the electrical industry, either as a semiconductor, roofing, piping, insulation and stuffed in the world of electric cables or electric industry in general to provide an outlet for reusable materials from tires and give a new application is interesting for industry and also provide a solution to the serious problem of recycling such waste are as difficult to reuse the tires out of use. The difficulty to eliminate stocks of abandoned tires or store is a serious environmental problem. At present, various methods for recycling used tires, such as mechanical grinding, which separates the vulcanized rubber and steel fibers, using the rubber in many applications such as flooring, insulation, shoes, etc.. The carbon black is an important component in the tires with rates up to 30%, which is used to improve the behavior of these abrasive. This thesis investigates the electrical behavior (conductivity, permittivity, electric module, ...) of different composite materials obtained by mixing different polymers with different percentages of GTR (up to 70%) see their response depending on the amount of GTR, also depending on the frequency and temperature and see the potential feasibility for use in specific applications in the electric field. For this thesis are done different mixtures of materials (polymer insulators) with GTR to study the microstructural properties, thermal, mechanical and dielectric, by performing several tests: test DEA (impedance), test Drive Strain, Young's modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength, hardness, microstructure analysis by electron microscopy and thermal analysis by DSC testing of all compounds that have been made and conclusions drawn as to affect the incorporation tire dust in different proportions of GTR(0-5-10-20-40-50 and 70% ) and with different particle sizes (<200 µm, 200-500 µm,>500 µm). From then analyzes the information obtained from all the research done to extract conclusions, then analyzes the current regulations and how they might use some of the compounds analyzed by the electrical industry, and thus recovered difficult to recycle waste while helping to lower production costs by adding powder tires. In addition, this can mean that quantifies savings in the global market and the Spanish market while environmental factors are weighted, such as the CO2 emissions and the storage of this waste.

    A la present Tesi doctoral s'aborda l'estudi de propietats físiques de materials polimèrics compostos, amb l’addició de partícules neumàtic fora d’ús (NFU o GTR –en anglès-) triturat i l'aprofitament d'algun d'aquests compostos per a la indústria elèctrica, ja sigui com a semiconductor, cobertes, canalitzacions, aïllament i farcits, en el món dels cables elèctrics o la indústria elèctrica en general per donar sortida a materials reutilitzables provinents de pneumàtics fora d'ús i donar una nova aplicació que sigui interessant per a la indústria i alhora donar una solució al greu problema del reciclatge d'aquest tipus de residus de difícil reutilització com son els neumàtics fora d’ús. La dificultat per eliminar els estocs de pneumàtics abandonats o emmagatzemar constitueix un greu problema mediambiental. En l'actualitat, s'utilitzen diversos mètodes per al reciclatge de pneumàtics, com la trituració mecànica, en la qual se separa el cautxú vulcanitzat de l'acer i les fibres, utilitzant aquest cautxú en nombroses aplicacions com paviments, aïllants, calçat, etc. El negre de fum és un component important en els pneumàtics amb percentatges de fins al 30%, que s'utilitza per millorar el comportament abrasiu d'aquests. En aquesta tesi doctoral s'investiga el comportament elèctric (conductivitat, permitivitat, mòdul elèctric, ...) de diferents materials compostos obtinguts mitjançant la barreja de diferents polímers amb diferents percentatges de NFU (fins a un 70%), veure la seva resposta en funció de la quantitat de NFU, en funció també de la freqüència i de la temperatura i veure la possible viabilitat per a ser utilitzats en aplicacions concretes en l'àmbit elèctric. Per a la present tesi doctoral es realitzen diferents mescles de materials (polímers aïllants), amb NFU per estudiar les propietats microestructurals, tèrmiques, mecàniques i dielèctriques, mitjançant la realització de diversos assaigs: assaig DEA (espectroscòpia d'impedàncies), assaig Tracció-Deformació , Mòdul de Young, Allargament a la ruptura, Resistència a la Ruptura, Duresa, Anàlisi de Microestructura mitjançant Microscòpia Electrònica i anàlisi tèrmica mitjançant assaig DSC de tots els compostos que s'han realitzat, i s'extreuen conclusions de com afecta la incorporació de pols de pneumàtic en diferents proporcions (0-5- 10-20-40-50 i 70% de NFU) i amb mides de partícula diferents (<200 μm, 200-500 μm, >500 μm). A partir d'aquí s'analitza la informació obtinguda de tota la investigació realitzada per extreure conclusions, tot seguit s'analitza la normativa vigent actual i de quina manera es podria utilitzar algun dels compostos analitzats per a la indústria elèctrica, i així es valoritza un residu de difícil reciclatge al mateix temps que es contribueix a baixar costos de producció per addició de pols de Pneumàtic Fora d'Ús. A més es quantifica en que pot suposar aquest estalvi a nivell mundial i espanyol a la vegada que es ponderen factors mediambientals, com pot ser l'emissió de CO2 i l'emmagatzematge d'aquest residu.

    In this study, the influence of an electrochemical pre-treatment was evaluated in dyeing wastewater reuse for five reactive dyes for cotton fabrics. The most proper dyeing method was established and the influence of alkali was also studied. Wastewater was treated in an electrochemical cell at 20 Lh_1 and 40 mA/cm2 for between 3 and 15 minutes before being reused. During the electrochemical treatment the evolution of the dye degradation was evaluated by COD measurements. From the results, it can be concluded that 70% of the wastewater can be satisfactorily reused by direct bath reuse with most of the reactive dyes obtaining DE (CMC (2:1)) values below 1 with respect to the reference. Differences of DE (CMC (2:1) can be improved up to 75% by applying an electrochemical pre-treatment. In DE (CMC (2:1)) values, DL* was found to be the most influential parameter. Finally, the influence of the level of dye degradation in the wastewater was observed as non-relevant in the direct reuse of the bath for most of the studied dyes

    In recent years, new technologies have led to the production of biofunctional textiles. These biofunctional textiles contain microscopic capsules of ingredients that break as the fabric rubs the skin, releasing the active agents. Absorption and desorption behaviour of active agents embedded into the different biofunctional textiles should be taken into account when determining the amount of active agents incorporated into these textiles and when following the delivery mechanism as the fabric comes in contact with the skin. In this work, an encapsulated active agent (a sun filter, ethyl hexyl methoxycinnamate [EHMC] into microcapsules or liposomes) was applied by foulard onto different fabrics. The amount of capsules and active agents embedded into the fibres were quantified by (1) weight difference between untreated and treated fabrics, (2) extraction with isopropanol in an ultrasound bath, or (3) extraction with isopropanol/water 50/50 in a soxhlet device. Sun filter detection of the extraction baths was followed by HPLC and by UV spectrophotometry. The results show that the real amount of the EHMC present in different textile substrates depends on the way that the active agent is trapped, the ionic character of the fibres and on the vehicles used.
