    A method to characterize small antennas in their actual operating conditions is presented. The proposed procedure is based on the radar cross section (RCS) measurement technique using backscattering modulation. A theoretical description of the measurement setup based on the signal flow graph representation is presented. The experimental validation includes the measurement of one and two port antennas, as well as the measurement of a small integrated antenna. Results show how the effect of the environment on the antenna impedance can be adequately measured with the proposed system.

    Biomedical microwave imaging is a topic of continuous research for its potential in different areas especially in breast cancer detection. In this paper, 3D UWB Magnitude-Combined tomographic algorithm is assessed for this recurrent application, but also for a more challenging one such as brain stroke detection. With the UWB Magnitude-Combined concept, the algorithm can take advantage of both the efficiency of Fourier Diffraction Theorem-based tomographic formulation and the robustness and image quality improvement provided by a multi-frequency combination.

    A novel 3D tomographic algorithm for short range cylindrical geometries using UWB frequency range is presented. The algorithm has been applied to breast tumor detection, nevertheless, its non application-specific character permits the use in other applications. The detection capability of the tomographic algorithm is proved through numerical simulations and experimental measurements of canonical and more realistic bodyattached breast phantoms. For the acquisition of the experimental data, a virtual array-based cylindrical measurement setup has been built. At the current stage of development 3 degrees of freedom are available allowing the scanning of bodies with revolution symmetry.

    Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are finding different applications as platforms to carry observation payloads. The need to establish reliable high data rate channels requires to characterize the radiocommunication channel between the UAV and the ground station. In this communication an experimental set-up and some results for the characterization of a radio channel at 5.8 GHz are presented.

    In this paper, a combined tomographic imaging system comprising the rotation of a multiplexed linear antenna array around the object under test is designed. With this system a cylindrical sampling is obtained, allowing to scan realistic phantoms without important restrictions on its shape. This, combined with the non-application specific 3D ultrawide band (UWB) Hybrid Focusing reconstruction algorithm, allows to use this system in a wide range of applications. The design of a multiplexed array of UWB antennas for medical applications entails significant challenges including a large impedance bandwidth, small size and low coupling between elements, which will be treated in this paper.

    In this paper a new measurement setup to obtain the characteristic channel matrix of a MIMO radio system is presented using a small and non intrusive device able to characterize two antennas and therefore obtaining the characteristic channel matrix of a MIMO radio system of Nx2 antennas without using a receiver for each port. The extension to a system of more than two output elements can be easily achieved increasing the complexity of the switching device. To validate the new methodology presented here a 2x2 MIMO channel matrix has been characterized comparing the singular value distribution obtained with a traditional measurement procedure.

The main contribution of this paper is to focus on the implementation of a two degrees of freedom imaging setup in order to deal with non-symmetric objects and to demonstrate its functionality with realistic breast phantoms.

    In smalls antennas S-parameters measurements are highly influenced by the measurement equipment as well as the environment. In order to avoid this inconvenience, a wireless and non-invasive characterization setup is required. In this paper a novel contact-less measurement setup is developed based on the Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurement method using impedance modulation. A small (2x2cm2) autonomous and selfpowered communication device is presented as a system able to change the load impedance of the antenna under test (AUT) to produce impedance modulation. The device contains a microprocessor, a switch able to change between three different load impedances and a 5V battery.

    In this paper the use of RFID for EM field measurement is studied. A novel RFID antenna with high tuning capabilities is presented and measured, and it is used in combination with several RFID IC to measure the EM field along the H-plane of a horn antenna. A calibration procedure for the non-linear effects in RFID IC is introduced and used to correct the measured fields.

    This paper evaluates the fundamental performance bounds, signal processing and technological complexity associated with the synchronization to radio and X-ray pulsars as well as its impact on the positioning accuracy of an autonomous spacecraft navigation system. Performance analysis of synchronization and location algorithms builds on Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimation which provides, asymptotically, unbiased minimum variance estimates with mean square error strictly approaching the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB).

    Optical beamforming networks (OBFNs) are an interesting alternative for the design of wideband antenna arrays, mainly due to their low losses and weight, their high parallel processing capabilities and their electromagnetic immunity. Nevertheless, for a practical implementation, different technological and architectural tradeoffs need to be assessed. In this paper, the performance of an OBFN system is analytically studied and experimentally demonstrated. The study forms part of the optical beamforming network project, a multigroup research project supported by the European Space Agency (ESA). Differently from bulky free-space geometries, the architecture is based on fiber-optic delay lines for the time delays generation and on a spatial light modulator for the phase shifts generation. Experimental results for an X-band prototype are provided, showing beam steering accuracy, multibeam capability, amplitude distribution weighting and wideband operation.

    In this paper, some results of the MIRAS-SMOS demonstrator campaigns are presented. The follow two campaigns were held: an image validation campaign at IRTA side and a flight demonstrator campaign at Finland. The ultimate objective of the airborne demonstrator is to demonstrate its imaging capabilities by applying improved calibration and inversion algorithms to natural low-contrast targets. © 2007 IEEE.

    An optimized linear multielement antenna (MEA) is presented for selection combining schemes that improves the selection diversity gain and selection diversity capacity in medium and low multipath environments, with respect to the performance achieved with a simple uniform linear array (ULA) using omnidirectional antennas, while it performs equally as well as a ULA in highly scattered environments. An analytical investigation based on the analysis of the correlation coefficients, together with simulations and extensive measurements, have been carried out for different fading multiple-input multiple-output environments ranging from line of sight (LOS) to non-LOS. Two MEAs are compared: a simple ULA with omnidirectional antennas and a MEA combining a ULA and a Butler matrix. The measurement results show that the nature of the proposed MEA is such that it is adaptive to any propagation scenario by simultaneously taking advantage of beamforming gain and signal diversity gain.
