  • Ground Penetrating Radar Applications in Seismic Zonation: Assessment and Evaluation

    El principal objetivo de esta tesis es la evaluación del radar de subsuelo (GPR) como estudio complementario y de soporte de análisis de zonación sísmica. La evaluación comprende tres aspectos principales: (a) el análisis de los suelos de geología superficial para determinar la eficacia de la metodología para obtener características importantes en la definición de nanozonas sísmicas mediante la aplicación de la metodología en Barcelona, (b) la prospección de diferentes estructuras en edificios con el objetivo de analizar la información que puede ser obtenida con esta metodología, útil para modelar el comportamiento sísmico y (c) el análisis y desarrollo de nuevas metodologías de procesado de datos aplicados a los casos anteriores.Los ensayos de laboratorio fueron diseñados y desarrollados con arena y grava, usando diferentes configuraciones para simular estructuras de suelos de geología superficial (esencialmente paleocanales y cursos de agua subterráneos). Los datos de radar se analizaron a través de software comerciales y algoritmos desarrollados en esta tesis. La simulación numérica se comparó con los resultados de laboratorio.Una parte consistió en una prospección en Barcelona. El objetivo fue obtener información precisa sobre los paleocanales y los cursos de agua subterráneos. El análisis se desarrolló con el fin de reforzar los estudios de nanozonación de la ciudad. Los datos de radar se contrastaron con datos de sísmica pasiva y sondeos. Los resultados permitieron identificar las características en los radargramas que son asociadas a la existencia de estas estructuras superficiales, y también a la existencia de agua en el cauce subterráneo. Los hechos más importantes observados en este análisis fueron: (a) los importantes cambios en la amplitud debida a dispersión como consecuencia de la energía emitida en zonas afectadas por cursos subterráneos y (b) los cambios en la frecuencia central de la señal debido a cambios en el contenido de agua en el suelo. Se desarrolló y testeó un nuevo algoritmo para identificar estos cambios.Se contrastó con estudios de campo usando antenas de baja frecuencia. Estos estudios adicionales permitieron definir la capacidad para delimitar las principales capas y materiales. La simulación numérica permitió definir la trayectoria de las ondas.Finalmente se analizó la prospección en edificios. Se evaluó la detección de elementos internos y la creación de imágenes tridimensionales de estructuras curvas. se realizaron ensayos de laboratorio en mampostería, utilizando los resultados para evaluar un edificio modernista en Barcelona. Los datos de radar se procesaron en coordenadas cilíndricas y los resultados se compararon e integraron con otras técnicas no destructivas. Se ha completado el estudio con la evaluación de edificios situados en otras ciudades (Valdivia y Barcelona).Los principales resultados y conclusiones son:1) Identificación de la amplitud de backscattering asociada a la existencia de estructuras geológicas superficiales. Hasta el día de hoy, el backscattering aleatorio era considerado como ruido. En esta tesis se identificó como un importante indicador útil en estudios de zonación sísmica.2) Generación de imágenes 3D de estructuras curvas que ofrecen datos importantes y precisos sobre sus elementos internos y sus posibles daños. La resolución de estas imágenes también fue analizada. Los resultados son realmente significativos para la obtención de modelos más precisos del comportamiento estructural de los edificios.3) Desarrollo de algoritmos para cuantificar la energía de backscattering. Estos algoritmoscomplementan la metodología prospectiva que puede ser aplicada en estudios de zonación sísmica y en otros contextos.

    Columns are one of the most usual supporting structures in cultural heritage buildings. This work presents the study of different columns using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) combined with seismic tomography. These columns belong to a Gothic Cathedral and to a Modernista Building. In the first case, columns are constructed with regular ashlars. GPR provide images that could define the internal ashlar distribution and shape, and the possible existence of inner cracks. However, the images must be supported with additional information from a seismic survey that could provide evidences about the stone quality. In the second case, columns are built with irregular and fragmented clay bricks, and mortar. The internal irregular and complex structure causes complicate 2D images. However, 3D images provide valuable information about the condition of the internal tube and indicate the existence of irregular elements. Results present high correlation with seismic data. In conclusion, results provide information and 3D images defining damaged areas and inner structures. Also, comparing the different methods with the structural knowledge, it is possible to define potential and limits of nondestructive testing applied to these elements.

    Coastal geology in Barcelona City is formed by Quaternary sediments overlying Tertiary strata. The Quaternary plane is crossed by paleochannels and streams, all of them under the city structures and constructions. Boreholes demonstrate differences in the grain size distribution of the materials from the different geological structures. In this work, Ground-penetrating radar was proved as a tool to obtain quick information about these changes. The results from more than 20 km of GPR profiles in Barcelona city, seems to indicate that, depending on the relationship between the wavelength and grain size, GPR signal scattering increases significantly. Therefore, the analysis of the noise in GPR signals supplies information to determine the possible existence of geological changes in the quaternary deposits. Several tests and measures in well-known emplacements, as well as models and simulations, were used to determine the ability of this method in the study of the Barcelona plain shallow geology. Correlation between paleochannels and infilled streams and higher scattering noise is observed in this study. The analysis of the scattering effect on the amplitude of the radar data could help to locate paleochannels and subterranean infilled streams, being a valuable tool to improve the knowledge of the city subsoil.

    Barcelona, as well as a large number of cities in the Mediterranean basin, has a housing stock composed of a large number of unreinforced brick masonry buildings. Motivated by different factors, the enlargement of the city (Eixample in Catalan) was held from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, a period in which a large number of buildings of this type were built, many of which are still used as dwellings. Although the buildings were built individually, some of them are linked to adjacent buildings by the side walls. This feature leads to the analysis of the buildings as isolated structures and also as an aggregate. Barcelona is located in a seismic region of low to moderate hazard, with macroseismic intensity between the grades VI and VII of the European macroseismic scale EMS'98. Based on the deterministic and probabilistic response spectra for the different types of soils present in Barcelona obtained in the work of Irizarry (2004), the seismic risk of four individual buildings and an aggregate is evaluated. The buildings are modeled and analyzed using the TREMURI program and MATLAB routines under the guidance of RISK-UE project.

    Almost half of the housing buildings of Barcelona were built before 1940. In the Eixample district, approximately the 65% of the buildings fit the main features of a building design based on unreinforced masonry (URM) without any consideration of the seismic action. The buildings of the Eixample district are not isolated, quite the opposite, they are built as a part of a squared aggregate (113,3m per 113,3m) which includes approximately 22 buildings. Since 1960, the major part of the demolished URM buildings has been substituted by reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. As a consequence of this substitution, we expect a change in the seismic vulnerability of the buildings aggregate. In order to evaluate changes in the dynamic behavior of an aggregate, we performed different pushover analysis using the TreMuri software. A comparison of results corresponding to aggregates of URM-buildings and aggregates including RC-buildings is presented.

    The non-destructive study of historical buildings, archaeological sites and other Cultural Heritage structures requires high resolution methodologies and a good knowledge of the potential of the different methods. Laboratory measurements provide valuable information about the ability to detect different targets and to determine structural problems, but these data must be compared to the results obtained in real and complex structures. In this work, we present experimental GPR measurements made in order to determine the spatial resolution under laboratory conditions. These results were compared to the data obtained in different GPR surveys applied to Cultural Heritage. The information obtained in drillings, in visual inspections and in old documentation about the historical buildings and archaeological sites is used to determine the resolution in each case.

    High-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) evaluations of structures are usually carried out using antennas with high nominal centre frequencies (between 1 and 2GHz). A comprehensive characterization of such an antenna would make it possible to determine the capabilities of a system and obtain accurate data interpretations. This paper describes the experimental determination of the radiation pattern of a commercial 1.6 GHz antenna, which forms part of a comprehensive experimental characterization. Radiation patterns are closely related to spatial resolution, so the horizontal and vertical resolutions are evaluated first. The footprint of the antenna is then measured in air using simple devices at different distances. The final result is the approximate spatial radiation pattern of the emitted energy, measured in air. Finally, these measurements are also taken in sand to obtain the radiation pattern and footprint of the antenna in this medium.

    Traditional architectonic heritage elements are fragile and irreplaceable resources, signs of the ancient ways of life and the history of the modern societies, and essential valuable elements of the own landscape of a region. Accurate updated documentation might be the basis for any conservation or restoration intervention over architectonic heritage in order to ensure the conservation in its original appearance and in a collapse risk-free state, with the minimum intervention. This paper shows a multidisciplinary approach to heritage documentation involving close range photogrammetry and ground penetrating radar techniques, as well as the development of finite elements based structural models. Specifically this study is focused on the documentation of a mediaeval bridge concerning the geometric shape, the building material and the current damages and its causes. The usefulness of close range photogrammetry techniques in the accurate 3D modelling, cracks detection and mapping and exterior material characterization is analyzed. Further, a non-destructive test through GPR is employed for the interior material and zones description. For both techniques, the methodology followed for data collection and data processing aimed at minimisation of time consuming and optimisation of results is described in detail. Advantages and limitations of these techniques are displayed and the accuracy of the obtained results is also estimated. Resulting information related to the whole bridge geometry is taken as basis to develop a numerical analysis using the finite elements methods (FEM). Linear finite analysis provides useful information for diagnosis although non-linear methods should be used when the properties and geometry of the internal and external elements are well known. Photogrammetry provides the exact geometry needed to perform the FEM pre-process. Radar data provide approximate information about the different internal zones of the bridge. Finally, the FEM analysis leads to obtain a stress distribution compatible with the detected damages, allowing identifying its possible causes. Close range photogrammetry, ground penetrating radar techniques and the FEM analysis are proposed to perform a complete survey of the stability of the bridge and its accurate geometry.
