    This contribution describes in detail the Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC) obtained from an observational set at 24 m depth in the Catalan inner-shelf (North-western Mediterranean Sea) analysing the dominant processes affecting sediment dynamics during storm events. A clear correlation between SSC, energetic waves, and along-shelf currents events has been found. Peaks in river discharge associated to rainy events are also correlated with SSC measurements. Measured conditions highlight the different sediment dynamic situations present during short-term events such as "wet" and "dry" storms with similar wave height. SSC observed during "dry" conditions are correlated with wave action. On the other hand, SSC peaks during "wet" conditions are primarily caused by wave action, along-shelf current, and river discharge. Observed sediment fluxes during storms are larger in spring than during fall. Although the observations present similar characteristics to other inner-shelf regions in the NW Mediterranean Sea, the results reveal a non-negligible influence of the along-shelf current in sediment dynamics. The results presented here contribute to advance in the understanding of sediment dynamics in wave-dominated regions such as the Catalan shelf.

    In this paper an evaluation of the morphodynamic response of different relatively common lightweight materials in small-scale physical models is presented. Results must serve to provide an overview of the various aspects likely to sensibly influence on sediments morphological response in small-scale tests and to determine the possible suitability of the low-density particles investigated for coastal modelling. Different granular materials, covering densities between 1150 kg/m(3) and 2650 kg/m(3) and median diameters from 0.07 mm to 1.5 mm have been selected to reproduce the experiments carried out in 1987 in the Grossen Wellen Kanal (Hannover, Germany). Tests have been performed at the Technical University of Bari (Bari, Italy) at scale 1:100 and at the Technical University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain) at scales ranging from 1:15 to 1:50, using irregular wave conditions and geometries based on Froude scaling. An analysis of the erosion and deposition volumes, the shoreline evolution and the beach profile slope has been done. Results show different mobility rates and beach profile morphodynamics depending on particles intrinsic characteristics, demonstrating that for lightweight materials not only settling velocity is paramount to determine particles suitability and morphodynamic response. Finally, a comparison between the morphological evolutions of the models and the prototype moving along the beach profile cross-section is presented.

    A study of three breaching episodes of the Trabucador barrier beach (Spanish Mediterranean coast) is presented. The analysis is done from a modeling perspective using XBEACH and SWAN. The morphodynamic model (XBEACH) has been validated with the available information. The so obtained Brier Skill Score index has been 0.44 which can be considered as acceptable. Results indicate that in all cases breaching was taking place after 8 hours of wave action (storm) or less. Besides, four main parameters control the final morphodynamic response of the barrier: the storm intensity, the water level and the initial emerged topography and the storm duration. Major breaching occurs when swell waves are in coincidence with high water levels whereas if they are uncoupled the barrier tends to be breached by a diversity of smaller channels.

    Una parte muy importante de las playas de arena de España pueden ser consideradas como playas urbanas y por tanto se encuentran limitadas en su parte continental por todo tipo de infraestructuras (paseos marítimos, calles, comercios, carreteras, vías de tren, etc.). En la mayoría de ocasiones esta ocupación del dominio natural no ha tenido en cuenta su alta variabilidad y dinamismo por lo que resultan especialmente vulnerables al impacto de temporales. Conocer con antelación cual será la respuesta de un tramo de costa frente a unas determinadas condiciones hidrodinámicas es altamente interesante puesto que permitiría escoger de antemano la mejor estrategia de defensa minimizando en lo posible los impactos. El principal objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar la viabilidad de un sistema de predicción morfodinámico, PRE‐MOS (Pre ‐ Morphodynamic Operational System), como herramienta de alarma temprana y gestión de la costa. Para ello se pretende reproducir la respuesta morfodinámica de dos playas de la litoral noroccidental mediterráneo español frente al impacto del temporal de Diciembre de 2008, que arrasó esta parte de la costa causando graves daños en paseos marítimos y otras infraestructuras. PREMOS se estructura en tres grandes módulos: (1) una unidad meteorológica representada por las predicciones de viento realizadas de forma rutinaria por el Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya mediante los modelos MM5 y WRF (Dudhia, 1993) para el mediterráneo noroccidental y que sirven como condición de partida a (2) la unidad de generación y propagación del oleaje, (SWAN, Booj et al. 1996) en donde se reproducen los procesos del oleaje que finalmente son utilizados en (3) un modelo de evolución morfodinámico (XBEACH, Roelvink et al. 2009) en donde se analiza la respuesta de la costa frente a estas acciones de oleaje. SWAN es un modelo de tercera generación de oleaje que ha sido previamente validado para distintos temporales para la costa mediterránea española (Alomar et al., 2009) mientras que el modelo XBEACH ha sido utilizado para evaluar los procesos de rebase y rotura en un tramo de costa del delta del Ebro (mediterráneo noroccidental) por García et al. (2011). El artículo describirá en detalle los resultados obtenidos en dos playas de la costa Catalana, realizando un análisis crítico sobre las sensibilidad del sistema frente a condiciones de partida (batimetría y condiciones de oleaje) distintas con el fin de determinar la utilidad de este tipo de aproximaciones para la gestión de costas.

    Sandy beaches in fetch-limited environments are protected from large ocean-generated swell waves, and fetch characteristics allow local wind-generated waves and currents to develop and drive the main morphodynamic processes. The morphodynamics of these low-energy beaches present a peculiar behaviour since there is not a dominant forcing mechanism inducing the beach changes. The main objective of this work is to describe and quantify the observed morphodynamic changes at the barred, quasi longshore-uniform beach of the Trabucador Bar at the Ebro Delta (Spain) under low-energy conditions. A nine-day field campaign was carried out within the framework of the European project FANS (Fluxes Across Narrow Shelves. The Ebro Delta Case) supported by the EC MAST-III Research Programme, (Contract No. MAS3-CT95-0037, DG12 – ESCY) and the measurements included a detailed topo-bathymetric surveying at the beginning and at the end of the campaign, video recordings covering the whole domain of the study area, surf zone waves and currents time series obtained at different positions and depths, nearshore pressure and horizontal velocities time series outside the surf zone. The results show that the beach underwent important longshore and cross-shore (the breaching of the submerged bar) morphodynamic changes under low-energy conditions. The observations suggest that the low-energy wave field and the beach profile played a key role in the generation of low frequency oscillations and rip currents that reshaped the whole study zone.

    A sediment transport model has been implemented and calibrated in the Ebro Delta Continental Shelf. Several parameters in the hydrodynamic and sediment transport module have been assessed in order to improve the results of this calibration. Four different non-cohesive and one cohesive classes have been defined and studied. The Ebro Delta shelf sediment dynamics have been analysed, highlighting the role of the currents, waves and freshwater input.
