Electrical discharge machining (EDM) provides an effective means of shaping hardmetals. However, it is also known that surface integrity of these materials may be affected by EDM, degrading their tribomechanical characteristics. This work focuses on assessing the use of two different surface modification routes: thermomechanical treatments (shot blasting, polishing and final high temperature annealing) and/or physical vapor deposition of hard coatings, for improving the fracture and fatigue strength of an EDM-shaped fine-grained hardmetal grade. In doing so, an optimal EDM's surface finish variant and a diamond ground and polished one are used. Mechanical behavior is evaluated under four-point bending and fatigue characterization is given in terms of fatigue limit following the staircase method. Experimental results indicate that both approaches markedly decrease the lessening effect of EDM on the mechanical strength of hardmetals, although a complete fracture and fatigue strength retention is only achieved by combining both of them. The improved mechanical behavior is rationalized on the basis of the beneficial changes induced by surface modification on the effective residual stress field at the surface of EDM-shaped hardmetals, as assessed by a linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis combined with fractographic examination.

The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, UPC-BARCELONATECH (http://www.upc.edu), is a technical university that teaches engineering, architecture and optometry degrees. RIMA project (http://www.upc.edu/rima) has been created as a meeting point for Communities of Practice (C&P) at UPC-BARCELONATECH in research devoted to teaching and learning methodologies. RIMA project includes Student Portfolio Community of Practice, GTPoE, focused on portfolio design models and templates. The main goal of GTPoE is to help teachers and students in developing portfolios as an authentic and holistic assessment tool in the frame of European Higher Education Area (EHEA) degrees and masters. GTPoE allow teachers and students to show and share works and examples according to Autonomous Learning (AL) level, as well as exchange experiences and results by creating a Decalogue of Good Teaching Practices, to improve students' portfolio performance. This work provides an approximation to research, based on fundamental aspects that a lecturer might consider to include in a student learning portfolio optimised for common activities in engineering and optometry degrees, essentially describing a relation of good practices. Portfolio experience can be easier applied to other subjects once the GTPoE site contains storage of some examples of using the portfolio in subjects in engineering and optometry degrees. This collection will be also very resourceful for other lecturers and students who have to introduce the tool. Generally, portfolio activity assessment is carried out by means of a survey, in which students can identify the strengths and weaknesses to guarantee the continuous improvement of their performance through portfolio development, in a progressive way to integrate academic knowledge and professional skills.

The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC-BarcelonaTech) has a list of generic skills included in its degrees, which are the focus of the Materials Science and Engineering Community of Practice GidMAT, related to RIMA (http://www.upc.edu/rima) project. GidMAT focus on teaching innovation and developing new learning methodologies. A learning methodology for the generic skill Working in teams has been developed, based on a structured rotation of roles within working teams and between teams. Results are compared to the evaluation of the generic skill Autonomous learning. The new methodology provides students with benefits in knowledge and skills acquisition, and the docent with an improved assessment of results at a relative low cost in time dedication. This paper presents an extracurricular program called INSPIRE3 that has been implemented by the ETSEIAT (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeries Industrial i Aeronàutica de Terrassa), a center belonging to the UPC-BarcelonaTech (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya). This program is mainly aimed at facilitating cross-curricular skills and developing abilities among students through collaborative-project based learning. The projection of an attractive external image of engineering degrees offered by ETSEIAT in order to increase the enrollment in such degrees is a secondary goal of this program. Under INSPIRE3, several real, challenging and multidisciplinary engineering projects are currently under development. The main feature of this program is that the subjects of the projects are proposed by the students themselves. In this paper, INSPIRE3 motivation, program management and implementation process are described and a short description of projects under development is also given.

There are many papers that present the problems of educational videos: need of a high number of resources to create them, excess of information in the majority of videos, gaps of information between videos and the rest of materials of the courses, etc. This paper introduces the concept ‘low-cost educational video’, which attempts to solve to a large extent the problems that have been identified in the educational videos. To this end, an empirical research is conducted with 487 students and various lecturers and professors in three undergraduate degrees: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management (in face-to-face as well as semi-distance modalities), and Aeronautical Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain). In order to achieve this goal, we introduce the process and the required resources for the creation and the diffusion of these low-cost educational videos. The results are analysed taking a literature-based questionnaire as a starting point and within the principles of good practice in higher education framework. The main research findings revealed an improved student motivation and an increase of the perceived efficiency in the learning and teaching processes, without substantially raising costs.
