    La disponibilidad de agua potable es posible gracias a las infraestructuras construidas que conforman las redes de distribucion. Las compañías de agua son las encargadas de mantener estas redes en buen estado, así como asegurar unas condiciones de calidad y presion en el consumidor final. Estas condiciones se verifican mediante medidas realizadas en los sensores de la red. Si se dispone del modelo de la red de distribución de agua, estas medidas pueden utilizarse tambien para su calibración, así como en metodologías de deteccióon de fugas [3], control de la calidad del agua [2], etc. Estas metodologías se desarrollan en lenguaje Matlab, combinadas con otros entornos que permiten la simulación de redes hidraulicas, como EPANET [4]. Este trabajo presenta una interfaz graáfica que combina ambas herramientas, permitiendo su interconexión y facilitando la aplicación por parte del usuario de funciones ya existentes, a la vez que permite incorporar nuevos módulos personalizados.

    This paper presents a methodology for leakage localization using FIR (Fuzzy Inductive Reasoning). A real water network situated in Barcelona has been subdivided in zones which could contain a leakage. Two sensors measure pressures on two separated points of the network. A faulty fuzzy model for each zone and sensor is generated. Test data have been used for classification of leakages in order to evaluate how this methodology helps in leakage localization. Results are compared with another isolation methodology. All the work has been done using simulations carried out by EPANET connected with Matlab. FIR applications used are programmed in Matlab too.

    This paper presents a study of the e ect of performing di erent control structures on a large scale water network. The aim is to keep network pressures stable and to their minimum in order to increase network efficiency and reduce leakage loss. One and two actuators pressure control is presented, including split range pressure control, all based on PID family. Simulations are performed using a simulation model of a real network (Demand Management Area situated in Barcelona). Resulting pressures of di erent control structures are compared. Subsequently, some leakages are introduced to the network to conclude which pressure control structure minimizes best the water loss. Finally, some discussions of the bene ts of using each control structure are presented.

    El objetivo de este artículo es valorar el efecto del calibrado de las demandas de agua en la detección y aislamiento de fugas en las redes de distribución mediante el uso de modelos de simulación hidráulicos [1]. Se utiliza una metodología de detección de fugas basada en técnicas de detección y aislamiento [2] con matrices de sensibilidad [3]. El éxito de los resultados depende del calibrado del modelo y de la precisión de los sensores, cuya inversión se rentabiliza [4] si los modelos hidráulicos están bien calibrados. La incertidumbre que presentan los modelos está provocada por las demandas. La conclusión del estudio pretende valorar el esfuerzo de realizar un mejor modelado de las demandas de una zona frente a los beneficios que esta acción representa

The proposed methodology has been applied to a District Metered Area (DMA) in the Barcelona network.

    Using the simulation models a methodology was developed for leakage detection and localisation in a water distribution network [4]. Such methodology is based on fault detection and isolation techniques. Sensitivity matrix of pressures to leaks [8] is generated using simulation models [1]. Such models are available in water companies. The methodology showed promising results but two main issues appeared. Calibration in models and precision in sensors was required. Investment in sensors could be afforded [6] as long as models were well calibrated enough. The main uncertainty in models lies on demands. This paper presents a study of the effect of an improvement in demand calibration on isolability of leaks. The aim is to quantify the return of an effort in calibrating in terms of leak detection one of the main issues in water industry [2].

    The structuring of water at soft solid surfaces remains an area of great interest to colloid science as a whole and has many applications in relation to colloid stability, foams, and wetting films as well as being central to membrane separations. Quantitatively calculating the structural components of thin layers of water and the interaction forces of hydrated molecules with the surface of pores through a layer of water having modified structure is one of the most important challenges in the physics of surface phenomenon. In this paper these effects are reviewed and discussed in relation to the confines of a capillary pore. Membrane nanofiltration is extremely complex and is dependent on the micro-hydrodynamics and interfacial events occurring at the membrane surface and within the membrane nanopores. There is significant debate as to the exact nature of these complex phenomena and rejection is typically attributed to a combination of steric and electrical effects. The electrical effects are less well understood and in particular the contribution of dielectric exclusion. A review of the two competing descriptions of dielectric exclusion is presented along with the theories currently used in modelling this phenomena. A series of rejection experiments of 0.01 M salt solutions at the membrane isoelectric point has been performed for the NF270 and NF99HF membranes. The dielectric constants inside the nanopore are calculated and these values were consistent for three of the salts studied, indicating that a simplistic model based on Born theory is accurate enough for engineering calculations and that ion solvation is most likely to be the more appropriate dielectric exclusion mechanism for true nanofiltration membranes.

    Leaks are present to some extent in all water-distribution systems. This paper proposes a leakage localisation method based on the pressure measurements and pressure sensitivity analysis of nodes in a network. The sensitivity analysis using analytical tools is not a trivial job in a real network because the huge non-explicit non-línear systems of equation that describe its dynamics. Simulations of the network in presence and absence of leakage may provide an approximation of this sensitivity. This matrix is binarised using a threshold independent of the node. The binary matrix is assumed as a signature matrix for leakages. However, there is a trade-off between the resolution of the leakage isolation procedure and the number of available pressure sensors. In order to maximise the isolability with a reasonable number of sensors, an optimal sensor placement methodology, based on genetic algorithms, is also proposed. This methodology has been developed for Barcelona Network using Piccolo simulator. The sensor placement and the leakage detection and localization methodologies are applied to district management areas (DMA).

    The division of a network in different sectors is a usual practice in Water Companies. It improves the management of the network in different senses. Sectors have more homogenous characteristics and need specific cares and treatments that is not the same all through the network. Specifically for leakage detection and assessment it is interesting to know the performance of the sector before any leakage detection strategy is applied. In this paper a characterisation methodology for the sectors is presented. This methodology is based on the knowledge provided by the company but has been analysed using clustering techniques. The main objective of the classification was to find out which were three interesting pilot sectors for the leakage detection methodology study. A desicion tablefor the selection have been developed based on these classifications. For the desicion Nevertheless the characterisation itself demonstrated to provide information to the experts about the Network.
