    Pervasive sensors networks coexist with users offering them services transparently, without the need for users to interact directly. This work defines an architecture that allows the creation of products and services to provide home automation functionalities for a large segment of population. A platform, on a low cost device and high-capacity computing, as basis of a transparent and indistinguishable sensors network has been designed. This includes simple configuration methods and it is capable of accommodating multiple services, from automation of blinds, lighting controls or security, to mechanisms for monitoring a patient health. A medication reminder service and warning, completely transparent to the user, has been the first developed application. This service plays, at the configured time, a reminder through the speakers. The user will close the event, simply performing the action (take the pill), thanks to the information transmitted by a device installed in the medicines drawer. Otherwise, if he forgets, the system will remind it to the user from time to time.

    The ongoing proliferation of new services, applications, and contents is leading the Internet to an architectural crisis owing to its inability to provide efficient solutions to new requirements. Clean-slate architectures for the future Internet offer a new approach to tackle current and future challenges. This proposal introduces a novel clean-slate architecture in which the TCP/IP protocol stack is decoupled in basic functionalities, that is, atomic services (ASs). A negotiation protocol, which enables context-aware service discovery for providing adapted communications, is also specified. Then, we present how ASs can be discovered and composed according to requesters’ requirements. In addition, a media service provisioning use case shows the benefits of our framework. Finally, a proof-of-concept implementation of the framework is described and analyzed. This paper describes the first clean-slate architecture aligned with the work done within the ISO/IEC Future Network working group.

    Las redes de sensores ¿pervasivas¿ permiten convivir con los usuarios ofreciendo servicios de manera transparente y sin la necesidad que los usuarios interactúen de manera directa. Este trabajo define una arquitectura que permite la creación de productos y servicios para ofrecer funcionalidades domóticas a un gran sector de la población. Se ha diseñado una plataforma, sobre un dispositivo de bajo coste y alta capacidad de computación, como base de una red de sensores transparente e indistinguible. La plataforma dispone de métodos de configuración muy simples y es capaz de albergar múltiples servicios; desde automatización de persianas, control de la iluminación, seguridad; hasta mecanismos para la monitorización de la salud de un paciente. La primera aplicación desarrollada es un servicio de recordatorio y aviso de medicación totalmente transparente al usuario. Este servicio reproducirá, en el momento configurado, un recordatorio a través de los altavoces. El usuario, simplemente realizando la acción (tomarse la píldora) finalizará el evento, gracias a la información transmitida por un dispositivo situado en el cajón de los medicamentos. Por otro lado, si se olvidara, se le iría recordando cada cierto tiempo.

    Current Internet has become an essential communication infrastructure, not only for information transfer but also as a key component of social infrastructures, such as e-government, energy/traffic controls, finance, learning, health, etc. Even though the Internet has evolved towards high-bandwidth network architectures offering transparent transport services for fixed and mobile applications, its future depends on how it is going to cope with several concerns on different aspects such as scalability, ubiquity, security, robustness, mobility, heterogeneity, Quality of Service (QoS), re-configurability, context-awareness, manageability, data-centric, economics, etc. This paper exposes the approaches proposed in the Spanish Government funded research project tin2010-20136-c03 to overcome identified drawbacks of the current internet, such as energy efficiency, network ossification, heterogeneity of information and coexistence of optical and wireless networks. In order to do so, two technologies have been identified as potential solutions to face some of these problems: i) Media Independence and ii) Virtualization. On the one hand, Media Independence enables the decoupling of the control plane from the physical technology specificities, by introducing an abstract control API to configure, monitor and command the physical interface. On the other hand, network virtualization strategies allow the partition of electrical and optical network infrastructures into multiple parallel, dedicated virtual networks for a physical infrastructure sharing purpose, and enables the creation of overlay networks spanning multiple technologies and realms, hence being a very useful tool for context-aware service composition.

    Nowadays, video streaming applications are the most bandwidth-hungry applications and this tendency is envisaged to grow exponentially. With the proliferation of multimedia capable devices, multimedia services have to deal with heterogeneous environments where very different types of terminals wish to receive content anywhere and anytime. This situation motivates the appearance of multimedia services that adapt contents to the specific context of users. These services can benefit from the use of different technologies for content delivery (e.g. Peer-to-Peer and Network Coding), media signalling (e.g. SIP and P2P protocols), media representation (e.g. MPEG-7 and MPEG-21) or multimedia scalable and robust codification (e.g. Multiple Description Coding and Scalable Video Coding). However, current Internet architecture is based on a rigid layered model (TCP/IP-based) following the, no longer valid, end-to-end argument, which makes difficult to introduce new functionalities efficiently. To solve this, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) principles seem to fit in the proposal of new architectures for a more flexible Future Internet based on services that can be invoked when and where necessary. The objectives of this PhD. Thesis are exploring and validating different mechanisms for enabling Future Media Internet communications. To achieve this, we apply the SOA paradigm to provide efficient context-aware multimedia communications in the Future Internet. This work proposes solutions to enable the seamless provisioning of multimedia services in the Future Internet by means of context-aware service discovery and composition processes which are integrated in a novel service-oriented clean-slate architecture. One goal is to provide adapted and personalized services, dealing with high dynamic and heterogeneous environments. For this reason, this thesis includes research on novel media coding techniques (Multiple Description Coding, Scalable Video Coding) and distribution techniques (Peer-to-Peer, Network Coding) that can be applied to achieve seamless media communications. Moreover, context-aware service composition will address the requirements of media services (and any service in general), access methods, devices and interactions. This work presents a radical view of the Future Internet, where the necessary functionalities for accomplishing communications, in user devices, in the network and at all levels are considered as services. Services are not fixed but dynamically composed where and when necessary, with respect to user service requirements, network transfer capabilities and surrounding context in the user and the network environments. Composition of basic network-level services calls for a clean-slate approach to the Internet, while composition of higher level (transport and application) services prompts for an evolutionary approach. Nevertheless, composition of communication services manifests itself as a revolutionary way of looking communications and building communication systems. This PhD. Thesis introduces two main architectural innovations clearly beyond current state of the art. Firstly, a Service- Oriented framework able to deal with (existing) functionality at all levels (connectivity, transport, application) by considering the provided service and not the technology behind the functionality. All these service functionalities can be seen as services thanks to suitable service-oriented abstractions that allow including existing functionality/protocols as well as new functionality in a flexible way. Secondly, we present a novel service-oriented clean-slate architecture generalizing Information- Centric Networking (ICN) approaches. This work would propose the first clean-slate architecture completely aligned with the work done within the ISO Future Networks working group

    The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya–Barcelona Tech (UPC), has added a new feature to its ATENEA UPC e-Learning platform based on Moodle. ATENEA UPC Service is UPC’s e-Learning platform which supports the Bachelor and Master studies, both face-to-face and blended. This new feature, called "Activity Stream" or "wall", allows progress in the implementation of methodologies based on social learning and mobile learning within the field of university studies. The Institut de Ciències de la Educació (Education Sciences Institute - ICE) leads the educational aims of the platform, and UPCnet -UPC’s ICT services company- offers the service and carries out the technical evolution projects of the platform (change of versions, development of new features, ...) The ICE, teachers at UPC and UPCnet, through working groups and projects in ATENEA Teaching Innovation LABs, evolve and test the new features of the platform that will later incorporate to UPC’s ATENEA Service. The aim of this presentation is to explain the pedagogical motivation of the initiative, the feature’s design process, the technological development done and the result of the actual experience carried out between February and June 2012 within the framework of the official engineering studies taught at the Escola d'Enginyeria de Telecomunicació i Aeronàutica in Castelldefels (EETAC).

    Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) have been an important research topic for the last years, playing a crucial role within the fast growing sector of mobile communications. At the same time, video applications over mobile devices are becoming widely used by nowadays mobile clients, where the quality in the transmission of such contents will determine the success of these applications in the future. Therefore, it is mandatory to find the best strategies to guarantee a good Quality of Service (QoS) to the end-user. In this work we present a set of novel strategies to improve the performance of video transmission over MANETs. These new strategies are based on distributed admission control protocols which has proved to be helpful at achieving an efficient video transmission system. Experimental results show that, when adopting the new strategies to determine the optimal number of layers to transmit, we can achieve better results compared to other existent approaches in terms of idle time periods, fairness and delay.

To solve this, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) appear with the goal of proposing new architectures based on services that can be invoked when and where necessary. This work introduces how SOA paradigm can be applied to context-aware multimedia communications. In addition, a scoring function for selecting different service implementations is presented and particularized for a case of selecting transcoding functions taking into account different quality assessment metrics.

    Video communication VANETs has many applications, such as emergency video transmission or inter-vehicle entertainment. However, delivering video to high mobile vehicles faces challenges such as packet loss due to intermittent connectivity and channel variations. Thus, designing a reliable approach for video streaming over such harsh scenarios is needed. Hence, we propose a reliable approach based on random practical network coding and source coding. This approach integrates the benefits of network coding with Multiple Description Coding to achieve robust streaming over VANET. Furthermore, we propose a redundancy controller based on fuzzy inference system to adjust the amount of redundant packets based on vehicular traffic density and SNR of the channel. Simulation shows the proposed approach achieves better protection against packet loss, application layer throughput and video quality.

    En la actualidad, el modelo para proporcionar servicios basados en alojar cada aplicación en un servidor físico no es el modelo óptimo, ya que los avances tecnológicos tanto en hardware como en software hacen que se produzca un desaprovechamiento de los recursos ofrecidos. Por este motivo, este trabajo presenta un nuevo modelo basado en un clúster de servidores con sistema de ficheros distribuido en red y virtualización de sistemas operativos que mejora la utilización de los recursos disponibles. Esta nueva arquitectura ofrece una nube privada que simplifica la gestión de los servicios y aporta una disminución del coste de mantenimiento, además de añadir flexibilidad, dinamismo y escalabilidad al sistema.

    The popularity of P2P video streaming is raising the interest of broadcasters, operators and service providers. Concretely, mesh-pull based P2P systems are the most extended ones. Despite these systems address scalability efficiently, they still present limitations that difficult them to offer the same user experience in comparison with traditional TV. These ones are mainly the freeriding effect, long start-up delays and the impact of churn and bandwidth heterogeneity. In this paper we study the performance of Multiple Description Coding (MDC) combined with the use of incentives for redistribution in order to mitigate some of them by means of simulations. Simulation results show that the use of MDC and incentive-based scheduling strategies improve the overall performance of the system. Moreover, an extended version of the P2PTVSim simulator has been developed to support MDC and incentives.

    DVB-IP es el nuevo conjunto de estándares de la ETSI para el desarrollo de servicios de distribución de TV y vídeo bajo demanda sobre redes IP. Aunque la ETSI ha reaprovechado muchos de los protocolos TCP/IP clásicos, también se han desarrollado soluciones novedosas, como por ejemplo DVBSTP (un protocolo de descubrimiento de servicio), AL-FEC (FEC a nivel de aplicación) o BCG (Broadband Content Guide, una guía enriquecida de programación basada en web services), entre otros. El artículo presenta la arquitectura de DVB-IP, así como la implementación de un demostrador de servicios DVB-IP basado en software libre (open source), que demuestra que es factible desplegar este tipo de servicios con un coste mínimo. Finalmente se discuten las posibilidades docentes de un despliegue como el descrito en una titulación de Ingeniería Telemática.

    Los sistemas actuales de videoconferencia IP presentan diferentes problemáticas que entorpecen la comunicación a través de ellos. La mayoría están basados en implementaciones propietarias y conllevan costes elevados de adquisición de los equipos. Además, la calidad de los recursos multimedia transferidos por estos sistemas acostumbra a ser bastante baja, cosa que afecta a la experiencia del usuario y a la percepción de presencia. Finalmente, la mayoría de las soluciones comerciales no incluyen la opción de asegurar las videoconferencias. En este artículo se presenta una solución implementada basada en un servidor de videoconferencias en software de código abierto. Una capa de señalización basada en el protocolo SIP y un plano multimedia, basado en un replicador de paquetes RTP. Esta solución constituye una plataforma que permite disminuir los costes del sistema usando ordenadores personales con clientes SIP en software, permitiendo reducir drásticamente el coste de los equipos. Finalmente, se propone un mecanismo de protección de los flujos multimedia usando Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) y Multimedia Internet Keying (MIKEY) para el intercambio de claves.

    Actualment Internet suposa un nou medi per a la distribució de continguts multimèdia. Tot i així, les xarxes actuals tenen certes mancances per a ser utilitzades amb aquest propòsit. Aquest article presenta el disseny i la implementació d'una nova aplicació de replicació de paquets per a salvar les limitacions imposades per la capa de xarxa. També es presenten els primers tests de rendiment realitzats amb aquesta eina i dues aplicacions satisfactòries on se'n fa ús.

    Aquest treball té com a objectiu analitzar la situació actual de la Internet, per proposar noves alternatives i dibuixar un possible camí cap a la Internet del Futur. Aquesta anàlisi vol ser un punt de partida, un document de reflexió, que posicioni als agents locals i nacionals (entorns de la recerca, innovació i producció, i usuaris) en una situació capdavantera en la construcció del nou model econòmic i social del segle XXI. El treball consta de dos grans apartats, una introducció descriptiva i conceptual del paper que juga la Internet i la seva projecció futura, i una segona part on es desdibuixen en mes profunditat les bases tecnològiques de la possible Internet del futur a partir de la realitat actual.

    En la actualidad, las herramientas colaborativas como la videoconferencia están teniendo un gran desarrollo, motivado principalmente por su capacidad de permitir una comunicación interactiva y facilitar el trabajo conjunto entre usuarios, sin importar que éstos no estén reunidos en el mismo lugar físico. En general, una videoconferencia multipunto o multiconferencia se realiza de forma centralizada utilizando un dispositivo de altas prestaciones llamado MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) y empleando un esquema cliente-servidor. Este esquema es muy usado en ambientes empresariales o de operador. Por otro lado, en Internet, la aparición de aplicaciones Peer-to-Peer (P2P) para distribución de ficheros y contenido multimedia ha permitido un uso distribuido de recursos de red, con lo cual se ha ganado en escalabilidad y versatilidad. Sin embargo, en este ámbito, servicios como una videoconferencia, donde la sensación de interactividad y presencia son puntos claves, el esquema P2P se encuentra en estado embrionario, ya que aún presenta problemas abiertos, relacionados por ejemplo, a la cantidad de participantes en el sistema, al uso de algoritmos ALM que no facilitan la interactividad, a la carencia de mezclado de audio/video, etc. Adicionalmente está la falta de integración con otros servicios de media de valor añadido (IM, VoIP, etc.) que son deseables de tener de forma integrada. Este trabajo presenta un prototipo de un sistema de multiconferencia P2P basado en Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) que intenta resolver algunas de estas cuestiones y sirve como prueba de concepto para desarrollar un esquema flexible para un servicio de multiconferencia, el cual aún no ha sido definido a nivel de estándar P2P-SIP.
