    This paper presents a novel wind farm control with the purpose to mitigate the flicker emission of doubly fed induction generators. The presented control strategy is implemented in a wind farm connected to a distribution grid with consumers. The control system is composed by two controllers in cascade, the wind farm control and the local wind turbine controller. The wind farm control adapts itself to the consumptions of the distribution network and generates the minimal reactive power which allows smoothing the fast variations of wind power output. In this sense, the wind farm control facilitates the integration of wind farm into weak power grids by exchanging reactive power with network. Moreover, the wind farm controller has to be stable, fast and robust and the wind farm dispatch function has to guarantees that the local wind turbine controller can exchange the reactive power set point with network. This controller has been developed with the simulation tool DigSilent PowerFactory v14.1. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Aunque el término domótica no es absolutamente desconocido son muchos los casos en que, de forma despectiva, se haasociado este término a una tecnología complicada yde lujo, que intenta hacer la vida más fácil en las viviendas y edificiospero que, al final, no funciona.Los fabricantes han dedicado grandes esfuerzos para mejorar sus productos considerando que, hoy en día desde el puntode vista tecnológico, estas tecnologías son maduras. Se ha formado a los instaladores quienes cada vez están másfamiliarizados con las nuevas tecnologías y quienes en un salto generacional ya las dominan, de forma necesaria, pasandode instalar simples elementos electromecánicos en las viviendas (interruptores, enchufes, protecciones, etc.) a programarsistemas electrónicos más complejos, evolución necesaria para adaptarse a un mercado cada vez más competitivo y pordesgracia, menos amplio y castigado por efecto de la crisis en la que estamos actualmente inmersos.Otros esfuerzos menos conocidos y probablemente más importantes que los anteriores han sido los numerosos trabajosrealizados para reglamentar y normalizar esta tecnología con el objetivo último de crear un mercado rentable.Este tipo de de acciones permiten definir correctamente qué se entiende por domótica (y otras acepciones similares) ycómo debe definirse e instalarse para que el usuario disfrute con garantías de esta tecnología. Se han definido susutilidades ya no solamente dirigidas al lujo o lo que hoy llamamos con mayor precisión "confort" sino aquellas que hacenreferencia a la seguridad, las comunicaciones y la gestión energética. ..Este documento pretende mostrar los trabajos que el autor ha realizado/participado y que han servido para definir,normalizar y regular, y que finalmente contribuyen a desarrollar este sector.

    This paper presents a sensorless and stable control method for a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). At first, a model of a five-phase PMSM is presented. After that a stability study has been performed by the analysis of the eigenvalues of the state transition matrix of the linearized PMSM model about an operating point. The results show that the machine speed response is unstable for input frequencies below the machine rated frequency. Finally, an open-loop V/f stabilization algorithm which ensures the stability of the system over a wide range of speed is presented.

    This paper compares different cascaded and multilevel topologies to interface supercapacitors to a dc bus in regenerative braking applications. It is shown that the modular multilevel dc/dc converter (MMC) can benefit from both reduced voltage and increased frequency across the inductor to reduce its weight and volume when using phase shifting modulation. The proposed controlmethod is able to balance supercapacitor voltage while providing precise output current control. The converter topology and control method are validated with simulations and experimental results.

    PEMFCs are the most popular type of Fuel Cells (FCs) and traditionally use hydrogen as the fuel. One FC problem is its relative slow dynamics caused by the time constant of the hydrogen and oxygen supply systems that can be in the range of several seconds. In this sense, supercapacitors (SCs) respond faster than FC to a fast increase or decrease in power demand. Thus, using SCs together with FCs improves FC life and performance by absorbing faster load changes and preventing fuel starvation of the FC. Therefore, it becomes necessary to study structures of power conditioners with their respective control systems that can mitigate the disadvantages mentioned of the FC itself. Several researches have studied the different topologies with their respective control proposals to operate FC and SC. This thesis proposes a digital control scheme to operate a PEMFC module of 1.2 kW and a SC through a DC/DC hybrid converter. A FC has been proposed as a primary source of energy and a SC has been proposed as an auxiliary source of energy. An experimental validation of the system implemented in the laboratory is provided. Several tests have been performed to verify that the system achieves an excellent output voltage (V0) regulation and SC Voltage (VSC) control, under disturbances from FC power (PFC) and output power (P0) as well as other perturbations described in analysis results.

    A detail modelling of railway electrical system with energy storages devices is developed in this thesis in order to analyze most of the implemented railway electrical system. The modelling has been realized from a point of view the design of them as from a point of view of purely energetic efficiency. In this way, after analyzing of the electric railway systems, it has been developed simple element models that have been grouped in four categories: contact line and return circuit, fix elements, mobile elements and energy recovery and storages devices. The complete systems are built from the simple element models linked. The system of equations of the complete system is no linear, and it is solved means of numeric methods. Then, it is shown the structure of Rsim software that has been developed completely as a part of this work, to conclude with two examples of the application of Rsim. The first example belongs an alternative current railway electrification and the second example is a direct current railway electrification. Keywords: DC railway system, AC railway system, railway modeling, energetic efficiency, reverse substations, energy storage devices, unbalance, rail potential, stray currents.   • Multilevel two quadrant DC/DC converter for regenerative braking in mobile applications

    In this paper different cascaded and multilevel topologies are compared for regenerative braking systems using supercapacitors (SC). It shows that the multilevel buck derived topology can beneficiate from both reduced voltage across the inductor and increased frequency to reduce the output inductance, even if there is the need for an input LC filter to reduce harmonic content in the SC. Also, the proposed control scheme is able to control the energy flow between SC and the DC bus, balancing the voltage in the SC banks. Experimental results verify the performance of the proposed converter and its control algorism.

    In this article, a high-accuracy all-digital resolverto- digital converter is presented. The two basic components of a conventional tracking R/D converter, the phase detector and the loop filter, are software implemented by frequency shifting techniques and a decoupled Double Synchronous Rotating reference Frame-based PLL (DSRF-PLL). This PLL allows the simultaneous extraction of the angular position and speed of the rotatory resolver, even in the presence of gain and phase errors in the resolver. In order to increase accuracy and to minimize the time lag of the whole system, oversampling methods and downsampling FIR digital filters are introduced. Finally, DSP implementation issues, like the use of techniques to synchronize the resolver output signals with the excitation one, are discussed. Using these combined techniques and a standard DSP with a 12-bit ADC, resolutions of up to 14 bits can be achieved with a computation cost of about 13% of the total (100 MIPs). The paper presents the main techniques, simulation and experimental results.

    Power electronics plays a key role in electrical renewable energy generation in photovoltaics, fuel cells but also in wind energy. This paper presents a new educational tool designed do motor control that can be also used in wind energy and PV. The platform uses a DC motor to emulate the wind turbine and a permanent magnet synchronous generator, in the case of the wind energy, and a single converter connected to the grid for PV.

    Urban DC railway substations are growing in size due increasing capacity demand. Several challenges associated with the increase of power demand can be met using power electronics. The proposed system is based on DC-autotransformers and active rectifiers working similarly to those in 3-wire AC railway electrification system. Conventional simulation software (Idom-REPS-DC) has been adapted to the system. A real subway line and the same line with the proposed 3-Wire DC working in the same conditions are simulated. The global performance of the system and the preliminary sizing of the converters involved are evaluated.

    L'actual situació energètica demanda cada cop més d'aplicacions que redueixin el consum energètic. A nivell d'energia elèctrica, i de la conversió d'aquesta a energia mecànica, els nivells d'eficiència energètica són força elevats si es compara amb altres fonts d'energia com poden ser els combustibles fòssils. Però no per això s'ha de deixar de treballar per tal de millorar l'eficiència d'aquests sistemes.Existeixen certes aplicacions de funcionament continu, que una petita millora en el seu rendiment significa, una gran millora en el consum absolut d'energia. Aquestes aplicacions poden ser bombes, ventiladors i compressors per aplicacions de ventilació, calefacció i aire condicionat (HVAC).En aquestes aplicacions, el cavall de tir fins avui dia ha estat el motor d'inducció. El motor d'inducció és relativament senzill de construir, es coneix molt bé el seu funcionament, i no requereix d'un sensor de posició per tal d'implementar un control de baixes prestacions com el necessari per aquestes aplicacions.Però es pot augmentar l'eficiència del sistema usant un motor síncron d'imants permanents. Aquest, pel fet de ser un motor síncron, necessita que les corrents injectades a l'estator estiguin perfectament sincronitzades amb la posició del l'imant del rotor per tal de produir el parell adequat. Per tant, cal desenvolupar nous mètodes de control, de baix cost, per aquests tipus de motor i que no requereixin d'un sensor de posició acoblat al rotor. Aquest tipus de sensors encareixen el cost final del producte i en redueixen la fiabilitat.Com que les aplicacions HVAC no requereixen d'una alta dinàmica del parell, el control $V/f$ es mostra com una estratègia adequada per aquest tipus de motors per aquestes aplicacions. Però pels motor síncrons d'imants permanents, fins i tot usant aquesta estratègia de control necessiten de la sincronització de la posició del rotor i les corrents injectades a l'estator.La primera part d'aquesta tesi versa sobre el modelat i l'anàlisi del motor síncron d'imants permanents, per proposar una alternativa de control sense sensor de posició pel control $V/f$ del motor síncron d'imants permanents.L'anàlisi d'estabilitat permet veure que es pot afegir esmorteïment al sistema modulant la freqüència d'excitació en funció de les pertorbacions de la potència. Finalment, la proposta es verifica mitjançant simulacions i resultats experimentals.La segona part d'aquesta tesi està enfocada als nous reptes en el control dels accionaments elèctrics i convertidors. L'electrònica de potència en si cada cop té més aplicacions. Convertidors de freqüència, filtres i rectificadors actius, fonts d'alimentació, escalfament per inducció, noves formes de transmissió de l'energia, i les energies renovables incorporen algun convertidor estàtic, i depenen d'aquesta per funcionar.Per tant, cal disposar d'eines per a poder experimentar a tots els nivells en aquests nous camps. El treball presentat a la segona part de la tesi és la feina duta a terme per l'autor durant aquest últims anys en el camp de l'experimentació i la docència del control dels accionaments elèctrics i els convertidors.Aquest treball a dut a la construcció d'una plataforma per a l'experimentació del control dels accionaments elèctrics i els convertidors. Aquesta plataforma es mostra com una eina efectiva també dins el nou Espai Europeu d'Educació Superior, ja que fomenta que sigui l'estudiant qui aprengui i també l'ús transversals dels coneixements.

    The current energetic situation demands for a reduction in consumption. The efficiency levels in electrical energy and in the electromechanical transformation are high compared with other energy sources, like fossil fuels. But that it is not a reason not to work to increase efficiency.There are some continuous running applications where a small amount of efficiency increase means a huge amount of energy saved per year. These applications are pumps, fans and compressors for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), for example.The workhorse for these applications has been for years the induction motor. The induction motor is a well known motor, a cheap motor, and does not require position sensor to implement a low-cost control for this kind of applications. But efficiency can be improved if the induction motor is substituted by a permanent magnet synchronous motor. However, in a permanent magnet synchronous motor, the stator currents have to be synchronized with the rotor permanent magnet in order to produce torque and not to lose synchronization. The need of a rotor position sensor increases cost and reduces reliability. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new control strategies to avoid the use of the rotor position sensor.Because the HVAC applications do not demand for a high performance control, the V/f control strategy is suitable for these drives. However, even using a V/f control strategy for permanent magnet synchronous motor there is a need in synchronization for stator currents with the rotor magnet position.The first part of this thesis deals with modelling and analysis of permanent magnet synchronous motors in order to obtain a sensorless $V/f$ control.The stability analysis shows that adding damping by frequency modulation using input power perturbations stabilize the system. Finally, the method is verified by means of simulations and experimental results.The second part of this thesis deals with the new challenges in drives and power converters.Power electronics is now pervasive in even most applications. Frequency converters, drives, active filters and rectifiers, power supplies, induction heating, new power transmission systems (HVDC) and renewable energy sources include any type of static converter.Hence, it is necessary to develop new tools to experiment and to teach these new applications. The work presented in this second part has been done by the author during these last years in the education and training of drives and power electronics.This work has the result of the construction of a new platform for the experimentation, training and education for drives and power electronics. This unique platform appears as an effective tool also inside the European Higher Education Area, because is a learn-by-doing tool, and uses transverse knowledge from other disciplines.

    Les societats modernes plantegen nous reptes que demanden noves maneres de tractar els projectes d'enginyeria. Els enginyers han d'afrontar aquests reptes i desenvolupar solucions òptimes i eficients pels problemes clàssics i nous. Els diferents avenços produïts en la tecnologia hi poden ajudar, però una nova manera de tractar els problemes enginyerils és també necessària, no considerant únicament les diferent especialitats de l'enginyeria aïlladament. En aquest context, podem parlar de la creació d'una nova filosofia de fer enginyeria: la Mecatrònica. La Mecatrònica s'ha definit com l'aplicació de decisions complexes a l'operació de sistemes físics. La Mecatrònica ha estat també definida com la integració o sinergia de diferents disciplines de l'enginyeria. Aquestes disciplines inclouen l'enginyeria mecànica, l'enginyeria elèctrica, l'enginyeria electrònica, l'enginyeria de control, les comunicacions industrials i l'enginyeria de software. No obstant, la importància del concepte no està únicament en la definició sinó a la filosofia que hi ha al fons. És important de veure, que la Mecatrònica no és només la suma dels resultats de diferents disciplines, sinó la filosofia enginyeril per afrontar els problemes com un de sol, fent servir les eines que subministren les diferents disciplines. La present tesi es divideix en dos parts que tracten problemes de diferent natura. La primera part es titula Regles de disseny i modelat d'actuadors per l'optimització de sistemes mecatrònics i es centra en proporcionar un anàlisis detallat de diferents actuadors utilitzant un procediment general, orientat a millorar el disseny de l'actuador. S'introdueix una nova metodologia per analitzar actuadors lineals electromagnètics i hidràulics modelitzant la seves magnituds mecàniques (força, treball i desplaçament) com a funcions de la geometria i les propietats del material, estudiant l'escalabilitat (en el sentit de produir la mateixa distribució de tensions i deformacions per diferents mides). La motivació de realitzar aquest treball neix de la necessitat d'estructures i sistemes lleugers i de volum reduït, que han de ser integrats en el procediment de disseny el més aviat possible. Per tant, s'estudien les relacions geomètriques, les proporcions i les propietats dels materials que maximitzen les magnituds mecàniques de sortida dels actuadors per un volum i pes limitat, així com l'escabilitat per la seva posterior integració en estructures. Els resultats són validats mitjançant anàlisi dimensional de les expressions obtingudes i comparant els resultats numèrics amb dades d'actuadors industrials. Es considera el comportament estàtic de diferents classes d'actuadors, incloent actuadors hidràulics i electromagnètics lineals. La segona part es titula Identificació i Control d'Actuadors Piezoelèctrics. Els actuadors piezoelèctrics estan demostrant ser una solució fiable per moltes aplicacions, des del microposicionament (màquines eina, dispositius òptics o microscopis moderns) al control actiu d'estructures. La principal motivació de la segona part de la tesis és aprofundir en models per representar el comportament histerètic dels actuadors piezoelèctrics per posteriorment aplicar els models al desenvolupament de controladors pels sistemes histerètics. Es desenvolupa inicialment un estudi general dels actuadors piezoelèctrics per després tractar la seva modelització. Degut a l'elevat comportament no-lineal observat es necessita un model d'histèresis. El model de Bouc-Wen ha estat escollit i s'ha treballat en la identificació dels paràmetres del model i la seva validació. Un cop el sistema ha estat modelat, s'olinebreak ha dissenyat un nou controlador lineal i s'ha implementat en una plataforma experimental utilitzant un DSP (Processador digital de senyal). Encara que les dues parts estan clarament diferenciades, la unitat de la tesis pot ser trobada a les arrels de la Mecatrònica. La tesis tracta la resposta a una sola pregunta: Com podem millorar un sistema mecatrònic? No obstant, la resposta és doble: Dissenyant i modelant actuadors òptims considerant el sistema o estructura complet i controlant el sistema adequadament fent servir els models desenvolupats.

    Fast changing societies come up with new challenges that require new engineering approaches. Engineers have to face such challenges and provide novel and more efficient solutions to classical and new problems. This can be done by using different relevant advances produced in technology. Furthermore, a new way of addressing the engineering problems has to be applied, not considering only isolated engineering specialties. In this frame, we can talk about the creation of a new engineering philosophy: Mechatronics. Mechatronics has been defined as the application of complex decision making to the operation of physical systems. Mechatronics has been also defined as the integration or synergy of different engineering disciplines. Such disciplines may include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Engineering, Industrial Communications and Software Engineering. Nevertheless, the importance of the concept does not lie only in the definition but in the philosophy behind it. It is very important to note that Mechatronics is not only the sum of the results of the different disciplines, but the engineering philosophy to face engineering problems as a whole, employing the tools provided by the different disciplines. The present thesis has been divided in two parts that deal with problems of different nature. The first part is titled Design Rules and Actuator Modeling for the Optimization of Mechatronic Systems and focuses on providing the detailed analysis of different actuators using a general procedure and oriented towards improving the actuator design. It introduces a new methodology to analyze linear electromagnetical and hydraulic actuators by modeling their maximum output mechanical quantities (force, work and stroke) as functions of the geometry and material properties and discusses the scalability (in the sense of producing the same stress and strain distribution for different sizes). The motivation to undertake such a work stems from the need for light and volume reduced structures and systems, which are to be integrated in the design procedure as early as possible. Hence, the geometric relationships, aspect ratios and material properties that maximize the actuator output quantities with a certain limited volume or weight, along with their scalability for the integration in structures are studied. A validation of the results is done by performing dimensional analysis of the expressions obtained and comparing numerical results with industrial actuator data. The static behavior of different classes of actuators is considered. Such actuators include linear hydraulic and electromagnetic actuators. The second part is titled Identification and Control of Piezoelectric Actuators}. Piezoelectric actuators are proving to be a reliable solution for many engineering applications, ranging from micro-positioning (machine tools, optic devices or modern microscopes) to active control of structures. The main motivation of this thesis part is to delve into models to represent the hystereticbehavior of piezoelectric actuators in order to apply them to the conception of controllers for such hysteretic systems. A general study of piezoelectric actuators is performed to later deal with the modeling of such actuators. Due to the high non-linear behavior observed, the problem of identifying and modeling the actuator requires a hysteresis model. The Bouc-Wen model has been chosen and investigations to identify its parameters and to validate the model have been undertaken. Once the system has been identified, a linear controller has been designed and implemented in a real platform, employing a DSP (Digital Signal Processor). Although the two parts are clearly differentiated, the thesis unity can be found in the roots of Mechatronics. The thesis deals with the response to one single question: How can we improve a mechatronic system? However, the answer is twofold: By designing and modeling optimum actuators taking into account the whole system or structure and by controlling the system appropriately using developed models.
