This paper deals with the blocking flow shop problem and proposes new constructive procedures for the total tardiness minimization of jobs. The heuristic has three-phases to build the sequence; the first phase selects the first job to be scheduled, the second phase arranges the remaining jobs and the third phase uses the insertion procedure of NEH to improve the sequence. The proposed procedures evaluate the tardiness associated to the sequence obtained before and after the third phase in order to keep the best of both because the insertion phase can worsen the result. The computational evaluation of these procedures against the benchmark constructive procedures from the literature reveals their good performance.

Long Term Capacity Planning (LTCP) consists of deciding the type and amount of capacity of production systems for multiple periods in a long term planning horizon. It involves decisions related to strategic planning, such as buying or selling of production technology, outsourcing, and making tactical decisions regarding capacity level and configuration. Making these kinds of decisions correctly is highly important for three reasons. Firstly, they usually involve a high investment; secondly, once a decision like this is taken, it cannot be changed easily (i.e. they are highly irreversible); thirdly, they affect the performance of the entire system and the decisions that will be possible at a tactical level. If capacity is suboptimal, there will be lost demand (in the present and possibly in the future); if the system is oversized, there will be unused resources, which may represent an economical loss. Long term decisions are typically solved with non-formalized procedures, such as generating and comparing solutions, which do not guarantee an optimal solution. In addition, the characteristics of the long term capacity planning problem make the problem very difficult to solve, especially in cases in which products have a short life cycle. One of the most relevant characteristics is the uncertainty inherent to strategic problems. In this case, uncertainty affects parameters such as demand, product life cycle, available production technology and the economic parameters involved (e.g. prices, costs, bank interests, etc.). Selection of production technology depends on the products being offered by the company, along with factors such as costs and productivity. When a product is renewed, the production technology may not be capable of producing it; or, if it can, the productivity and/or the quality may be poor. Furthermore, renewing a product will affect its demand (cannibalization), as well as the demand and value of the old products. Hence, it is very important to accurately decide the correct time for product renewal. This thesis aims to design a model for solving a long term capacity planning problem with the following main characteristics: (1) short-life cycle products and their renewal, with demand interactions (complementary and competitive products) considered; (2) different capacity options (such as acquisition, renewal, updating, outsourcing and reducing); and (3) tactical decisions (including integration strategic and tactical decisions).

This paper focuses on the integration of marketing and production decisions regarding aggregate planning in industrial companies. The main contributions to the literature are described briefly and used to present a summary of the state of the art. This review will enable the study of the interrelations between the key variables of marketing decision-making (price and/or promotion) and production decision-making (product quantity, staff size, working hours and inventory level) and thereby contribute to the development of integrated decision models. These contributions are then analysed in relation to mathematical programming models that include marketing and production variables in aggregate planning. Finally, future lines of research are proposed.

We present a methodology to deal with the problem of the Strategic Capacity Planning in universities. The methodology includes the characterization of the problem, a mixed integer lineal programming (MILP) model for a variant of the problem, a discussion on the necessary data and its pre-analysis, the model resolution and an adapted approach to the uncertainties. The methodology can be used not only for planning the staff capacity in a strategic level, but also for assessing the impact of different strategies (policies for human resources, number of offered careers, etc.).

Purpose: This paper introduces a procedure for solving the staffing problem in a service system (i.e., determining the number of servers for each staffing period). Design/methodology: The proposed algorithm combines the use of queueing theory to find an initial solution with the use of simulation to adjust the number of servers to meet previously specified target non-delay probabilities. The basic idea of the simulation phase of the procedure is to successively fix the number of servers from the first staffing period to the last, without backtracking. Findings: Under the assumptions that the number of servers is not upper-bounded and there are no abandonments and, therefore, no retrials, the procedure converges in a finite number of iterations, regardless of the distributions of arrivals and services, and requires a reasonable amount of computing time. Originality / value: The new procedure proposed in this paper is a systematic, robust way to find a good solution to a relevant problem in the field of service management and it is very easy to implement using no more than commonly accessible tools.

This paper introduces the Strategic Capacity Planning problem in knowledge intensive organizations (KIOs) and proposes a classification scheme based on different characteristics such as the organization structure, the workforce characteristics, the capacity requirements, the capacity decisions or the evaluation criteria, among others. The classification, which gives rise to a high number of variants, is the first step towards a general solving methodology design and the developing of ad hoc solving procedures

This paper introduces an original planning model which integrates production, human resources and cash management decisions, taking into account the consequences that decisions in one area may have on other areas and allowing all these areas to be coordinated. The most relevant characteristics of the planning problem are: (1) production capacity is a non-linear function of the size of the staff; (2) firing costs may depend on the worker who is fired; (3) working time is managed under a working time account (WTA) scheme, so positive balances must be paid to workers who leave the company; (4) there is a learning period for hired workers; and (5) cash management is included. A mixed integer linear program is designed to solve the problem. Despite the size and complexity of the model, it can be solved in a reasonable time. A numerical example is included to illustrate its performance.

Gender equality is now a matter that concerns all European countries. Despite the great effort made by governments and the progress of laws, gender discrimination still exists in family, social, cultural, political and economic spheres. Even today, it is rare to find women at the top level in companies. The path to equal opportunities is long and the only way to improve the situation is by means of appropriate equal opportunities plans. An essential part of the process of designing and implementing such action plans involves diagnosing the situation in a company. In this paper, an innovative indicator model is proposed. A review of numerous international private and public equal opportunities plans led to the design of a model to carry out a diagnose to identify all areas that could be corrected or improved by implementing specific measures, leading the company to deliver real equal opportunities policies. The indicator model is designed for the present historical context, though it is flexible enough to be adapted to each age and situation. The indicator model, which is original, will help companies carrying out one of the most important and essential parts of the process of designing and implementing and equal opportunities plan. Moreover, taking the indicator model companies ensure that all the relevant features are covered.

Starting from a comprehensive set of experimental test results of upright cross-sections in compression, this paper is focussed on how the section can be optimally designed to achieve the highest possible failure load in global buckling. The aim is to optimize a cross-section prototype shape with restrictions on its geometry attending to manufacturing feasibility and assembly constraints. The proposed scheme consists of maximizing the design strength with respect to flexural torsional buckling, according to European Standard prEN 15512:2008 [European Standard prEN 15512:2008. Steel static storage systems - Adjustable pallet racking systems - Principles for structural design] / Fédération Européenne de la Manutention [Fédération Européenne de la Manutention (Section X): The design of static steel pallet racking. FEM 10.2.02; August 2000] design recommendations. This is a bicriteria optimization problem which is solved by formulating a nonlinear mathematical program. Optimization is performed prior to the finite element method (FEM) nonlinear analysis of the solution design. The procedure herein presented has two advantages: on the one hand it considerably reduces the number of nonlinear analyses, and on the other it ensures that the best design is achieved.
