    During the last decades, various material models have been proposed describing stainless steel nonlinear behaviour through different parameters. The differences among these models are analysed herein using experimental data of different stainless steel types. An interactive computer programme, usable for any series of experimental data, is developed and presented: the procedure for the determination of Young's modulus (E-o) is pointed out and the least-square adjustment to optimize the strain-hardening exponents of different material models is described. Different expressions for the calculation of the parameters, proposed by several authors and used in a variety of codes, are analysed and new ones are proposed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.     The behaviour and design of stainless steel plate girders loaded in shear is investigated in this paper. A review of existing methods for the design of stainless steel plate girders, including codified provisions, is first presented. A database of thirty-four experiments carried out on austenitic, duplex and lean duplex stainless steel plate girders is then reported, and used to assess the current shear resistance design equations from Eurocode 3: Part 1.4 and Eurocode 3: Part 1.5 and the recent proposals from the literature. The comparisons clearly indicate that the design provisions of Eurocode 3: Part 1.4 are conservative and that improved results can be achieved by applying Eurocode 3: Part 1.5 and the proposed expressions of Estrada et al. However, yet further improvements are possible and, based on the available structural performance data, revised design expressions for the calculation of the ultimate shear capacity of stainless steel plate girders suitable for incorporation into future revisions of Eurocode 3: Part 1.4 have been proposed and statistically verified. Unlike the current provisions of Eurocode 3: Part 1.4, the design rules proposed herein differentiate between rigid and non-rigid end posts, and, offer enhancements in shear buckling capacity of around 10%.     In this paper, a mechanical model aimed at predicting the ultimate load capacity of transversally stiffened steel plate girders subjected to patch loading is revisited. This mechanical model gives accurate results for homogeneous steel plate girders (identical yield strength for web and flanges) but it is found that for the case of hybrid girders (fyf/fyw), certain correction factors must be added for maintaining the same level of accuracy. The provided correction is inferred empirically from a series of experimentally calibrated numerical results and the resulting formulae are expressed in accordance with the EN1993-1-5 procedure.

    Las vigas armadas esbeltas de inercia variable (no prismáticas) se utilizan frecuentemente en el proyecto de estructuras de acero, tales como puentes metálicos y mixtos de luces medias y grandes y pórticos de naves industriales de gran luz. Varias serían las razones que justificarían el proyecto de estas vigas armadas esbeltas de acero de canto variable. En primer lugar, el alzado longitudinal de los elementos estructurales se adecúa a las leyes de esfuerzos que los solicitan, mejorando su eficiencia estructural. En segundo lugar, ello supone un menor consumo de acero y un ahorro en el coste de la estructura. En tercer lugar, el aspecto estético de la estructura mejora de manera notable, aligerando la estructura y reduciendo el mensaje de pesadez que suelen enviar este tipo de estructuras. Por último, en ocasiones, el proyecto de elementos estructurales no prismáticos viene propiciado por los aspectos formales de la obra. Durante las últimas décadas, la resistencia e inestabilidad de las vigas armadas de canto constante han sido estudiadas profundamente por numerosos investigadores. No ha sido así en el caso de vigas de acero no prismáticas, siendo su comportamiento más complejo. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es realizar un análisis exhaustivo del comportamiento estructural de dichas vigas esbeltas no prismáticas de acero y ofrecer unas reglas de aplicación para su proyecto y cálculo. Tal objetivo se dirige fundamentalmente a evaluar la resistencia a cortante de vigas de canto variable en las que el ángulo de inclinación sea considerable (mayor que 10 grados). Conviene señalar que las reglas recogidas en EN 1993-1-5 (Eurocódigo 3) para afrontar esta situación de proyecto son algo simplistas, y no recogen la casuística más significativa en cuanto a los tipos estructurales a considerar en el proyecto. El cuerpo principal está constituido por cuatro publicaciones. Los temas objeto de estudio en ellas y en la tesis son el esfuerzo cortante crítico elástico de paneles de forma trapezoidal, la influencia de las imperfecciones geométricas y las tensiones residuales, el efecto Resal, la posición de la rigidización y la resistencia última a cortante de vigas armadas esbeltas de acero de canto variable, sin y con rigidizadores longitudinales. Los estudios mencionados se enmarcan perfectamente dentro del objetivo principal de la tesis. La metodología aplicada ha incluido las siguientes fases: el estudio bibliográfico y la investigación inicial, el desarrollo del modelo numérico, la ejecución de dos campañas experimentales, la realización de un amplio estudio paramétrico, el análisis comparativo entre los resultados experimentales, los numéricos y los obtenidos según EN 1993-1-5 y, finalmente, la confección de una propuesta de diseño, robusta y eficiente, para la evaluación de la resistencia última a cortante de vigas armadas esbeltas de acero de canto variable.La investigación realizada contempló la ejecución de dos campañas experimentales. En la primera, se ensayaron vigas no prismáticas con rigidizadores transversales, sometidas a cortante y a interacción flexión-cortante. En la segunda, se ensayaron vigas no prismáticas de canto variable con rigidizadores transversales y con rigidizadores longitudinales, sometidas a cortante.Los resultados obtenidos en los ensayos permitieron verificar el modelo numérico. Dicho modelo fue utilizado entonces para realizar un amplio estudio paramétrico, y conocer así la influencia de las variables más relevantes sobre el comportamiento estructural de estas vigas. Finalmente, se presenta una nueva propuesta de cálculo para cuantificar la resistencia última a cortante de vigas armadas esbeltas de acero de canto variable. La propuesta se basa en el método del ¿campo girado de tensiones¿, único método contemplado en EN 1993-1-5. La propuesta mantiene su simplicidad y fiabilidad, y es válida para parámetros geométricos arbitrarios y para diferentes tipos de vigas no prismáticas.

    Cold-formed stainless steel members are widely used due to their high corrosion resistance and high resistance-to-weight ratio but their susceptibility to buckle implies that instability phenomena such as web crippling, where the web locally buckles due to concentrated transverse forces, must be considered. On the other hand, the emergent ferritic stainless steel has very low nickel content and therefore, they are cheaper and relatively price stable compared to austenitics and duplex. Their promising future has aimed to develop efficient design guidance and as a result, a new unified web crippling resistance expression based on numerical simulations and thereafter validated with experimental results has been proposed.

    This paper presents a new proposal for estimation of critical load for non-prismatic, thin plates simply supported on four edges subjected to shear. The research included wide parametric studies using more than 500 samples. The parameters taken into account were the web thickness, the panel aspect ratio and the inclination angle. The influence of each was analysed separately and then some simplifications were made in order to find coherent expressions to describe the behaviour of the studied panels. The numerical results were then used to validate the solution proposed in EN 1993-1-5. As a result of this comparison, it is concluded that new design formulations are needed for tapered plates with a considerable slope. Based on previous research by the authors concerning four various geometrical typologies of tapered panels, four expressions for the shear buckling coefficient k f are proposed.

    This paper presents an experimental and numerical research on tapered steel plate girders subjected to shear. Experimental tests included four small-scale tapered steel plate girders. Research was focused on both, critical shear load and ultimate shear resistance. Moreover, the post-buckling behaviour of tapered plates was studied. Further, some parametric studies with various geometries of tapered panels were done in order to find the most favourable design situations. The analysed parameters were: the panel aspect ratio, the inclined flange angle, the web and the flange slenderness. Numerical simulations allowed distinguishing four different typologies of tapered plate girders which should be considered separately in design because of their different behaviour. Verification of the simplified procedure for tapered plates proposed in Eurocode EN 1993-1-5 allowed concluding that for some cases the estimation of the ultimate shear resistance is situated on the unsafe side and need to be revised.

    Metallic alloys have a significant role in thin-walled engineering structures due to their unique properties such as corrosion resistance, low density or durability. Their mechanical behaviour is usually nonlinear, and this nonlinearity can be further increased during the work-hardening process. In such cases, designers have to take the proper stress-strain relationship into account to obtain reliable prediction of deformations or internal forces. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to match different kinds of measured data or already existing stress-strain models. It is flexible to accommodate any number of measured or recommended material parameters, and therefore makes design rules independent on testing standards. It is particularly suitable for computer code implementation. The approximate inversion of the multistage model is also included in the presented study.

    Hybrid girders have proven to be an economical alternative to homogeneous girders since they provide a greater flexural capacity. One of the potential applications of hybrid steel plate girders is their usage in bridge construction. One of the potential constructive methods of these bridges is the push launch method, in which patch loads may condition the design. The aim of this paper is to present advanced conclusions of a research work dealing simultaneously with these two fields; the hybrid typology when subjected to the particular case of patch loading. The most remarkable results of the research work are pointed out. On the one hand, it is shown that the influence of the fyf/fyw ratio (namely, the hybrid grade) is negligible for girders with largely spaced transverse stiffeners. On the other hand, it is shown that this influence can be significant if the transverse stiffeners are closely spaced. Suggestions for considering these findings on design codes are provided at the end paper.

    El objetivo principal de la investigación es el de reproducir numéricamente, utilizando el código Abaqus, dos series de ensayos en pilares tubulares circulares rellenos de hormigón encontrados en la literatura. La primera se refiere al conocido ensayo push-out y permite calibrar las condiciones de adherencia entre ambos materiales. La segunda se refiere a ensayos de carga axil estática aplicada en cabeza al conjunto hormigón-acero para diferentes geometrías. Con esta última, se pretende calibrar la formulación de contacto y despegue entre las superficies que permitirá reproducir adecuadamente los posibles fenómenos de inestabilidad. En ambos casos, se considera que el confinamiento del hormigón se reproduce adecuadamente de manera implícita en el modelo tridimensional.
