    We designed and developed a vision-based computer interface which works with head movements. The system was implemented in a centre for users with cerebral palsy and they used it in contexts related with recreation or with education. During this process, it was observed that the continued use of the interface with a set of training tasks may act as a physical and cognitive rehabilitation tool and complement users¿ rehabilitation therapy. We comment on five case studies of users who have worked with the interface for five months and whose qualitative outcomes, observed by the therapists who accompanied them, were positive; specifically there was improvement in work posture, head control, increased endurance, decreased involuntary movements and improved spatial orientation. The case studies also showed the need to supervise the users¿ work in order to achieve these aims, along with the importance of motivation and active, voluntary participation of users in the rehabilitation process.

    This paper reflects the state of art in the field of human factors for unmanned aerial vehicles. It describes the GEDIS-UAV guide, which is a modification of the GEDIS guide. It also shows the evaluation of the Sky-eye project graphical user interface as an example of the methodology. The analysis and evaluation method reflected in this paper may be used to improve the graphical user interface of any unmanned aerial vehicle.

Este artículo presenta de forma reflexiva una primera valoración de las metodologías de enseñanza y aprendizaje que se han llevado a cabo. Así mismo, se exponen los aspectos innovadores con los que se ha querido aportar una diferenciación y singularidad respecto a otros centros que imparten la misma titulación. El enfoque sistemático que aquí se presenta se enlaza con la misión y valores del plan estratégico de nuestro centro en el que se profundiza en aspectos de innovación docente y emprendedurismo.

    La Escuela Politécnica Superior de Ingeniería de Vilanova i la Geltrú ha realizado ya tres planes estratégicos desde 1997. En la actualidad estamos desarrollando el cuarto plan con un enfoque renovado para hacerlo más ágil, concentrándonos en unos pocos retos estratégicos. Hemos contado con la orientación del Gabinete de Planificación, Evaluación y Calidad de la universidad, para realizar el diseño del plan de la mejor forma posible. En este artículo mostraremos el proceso que estamos siguiendo en la definición y puesta en marcha del plan estratégico 2013-2016 de nuestro Campus. Expondremos como se ha definido el proceso de forma participativa, que etapas se han seguido para analizar correctamente la situación de partida, como hemos definido hacia donde deseamos dirigirnos y cómo hacerlo con éxito, con objetivos compartidos por la comunidad para hacer frente con mayor garantía a los retos y dificultades actuales.

    The association between human computer interaction methods within traditional design methods is presented in this paper. The engineering degree of industrial design and product development is composed by subjects and an international mobility program that facilitates this relationship. For this reason the role playing model is used with the aim to work with multidisciplinary teams. This paper shows study cases of interactive systems: design, prototype devices (vibrating bracelet) and evaluation of small interfaces (Tablet PC) and the assessment of this teaching experience.

    In this paper we present a graphical user interface (GUI) for home automation which includes an avatar interface as a help-system. The work aims at analysing the user-home automation system interaction to model the user control over the system and the level of assistance required. We have developed high-fi prototypes to test the avatar-based help system with incremental functionalities embedded in the home GUI. Preliminary results suggest the acceptance of the system and its use in share control systems in smart and assistive home scenarios.

    In this paper we present an Information Technologies (IT) based questionnaire tool in order to support evaluation activities related to industrial automation. We assess the questionnaire tool by giving special attention to teaching activities at different universities and industrial cooperation, all of them within the industrial automation field. In an initial assessment, the use of an evaluation questionnaire tool within an academic platform allows members from different universities to collaborate and to share knowledge. By means of an example, the Barcelona Tech University in Spain provides support for teaching activities in automation to the ESPE University in Quito, Ecuador. A second case study example is presented in order to show how to detect sources of complexity in human supervisory control room tasks in wastewater treatment plants. The first results show that the interface is effective, easy to use and understand and can help engineering students in a training program to play the role of control room operators and the elicitation of sources of complexity can be useful to improve the interaction between humans and safety-critical systems in the industrial domain.

    The main goal of this chapter is to propose a guideline for human-robot systems focused on ergonomic haptic interaction. With this aim, this model presents several main parts: a set of heuristic indicators in order to identify the attributes of the haptic interaction, the relationship between indicators, the human task and the haptic interface requirements and finally an experimental task procedure and a qualitative performance evaluation metrics in the use of haptic interfaces. The final goal of this work is the study of possible applications of haptics in regular laboratory conditions, in order to improve the analysis, design and evaluation of human task over haptic interfaces in telerobotic applications.

    In human-automation interaction it is necessary to define methods and tools to assess the human-system interface complexity. In a first assessment, the use of an evaluation questionnaire aiming at detecting complexity sources in the human supervisory control room tasks in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is presented in this paper. The first results show that the elicitation of complexity sources can be useful to improve the interaction between humans and safety-critical systems in the industrial domain.

    This communication presents a collaborative experience between four Spanish centers: the School of Engineering (ETSE) and the Sports Services Area (SAF) both from the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) jointly with two centers of the Technical University ofCatalonia, the Technical school from ViJanova i la GeJtru (EPSEVG) and the Technical school in Terrassa (ETSEIAT). The idea behind this colaboration is to explore the possibility of role playing in engineering ed ucation and project development for engineering students. The basic principie of such projects is the identification ofthe corresponding roles associated wi th the differen t parts that can be found OD current social/industrial activity. In this paper the role playing model is presented: the first part, the role ofthe partners, and the second part the students' role developing applied projects in human-automation systems.

    Human-Machine-Interfaces are with no doubt one of the constitutive parts of an automation system. However, it is not till recently that they have received appropriate attention. It is because of a major concern about aspects related to maintenance, safety, achieve operator awareness, etc has been gained. Even there are in the market software solutions that allow for the design of efficient and complex interaction systems, it is not widespread the use of a rational design of the overall interface system, especially for large scale systems where the monitoring and supervision systems may include hundreds of interfacing screens. It is on this respect hat this communication provides an example of such development also by showing how to include the automation level operational modes into the interfacing system. Another important aspect is how the human operator can enter the control loop in different ways, and such interaction needs to be considered as an integral part of the automation procedure as well as the communication of the automation device.In this paper the application of design and operational modes guidelines in automation are presented inside an educational flexible manufacturing system case study.

    The university is currently living a great amount of changes of conceptual and methodological nature, on the basis of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This new scenario promotes new learning and teaching methodologies with particular requirements. In a global sense it can be stated that a major consequence of this new approach is the increase on the amount of feedback required between the actors involved during the learning process (e.g. lecturer and students). In this article we present an experience where the organization of the lecture activities (teaching, evaluation, assessment, etc) are organized along a timeline that obeys to the purpose of increasing the feedback the student receives. Even it is well known that continuous evaluation may constitute a positive framework that van enhance student performance, it is shown here that if all the activities are designed as a whole the student’s self-feedback is increased and the final performance improved. As a particular case of this experience, the teaching of the Signals and Systems subject within the Computer Science Engineering degree is taken as a framework and improvements shown with data with respect to previous years.

    In tasks requiring human supervision in an industrial control room there are applied generic disciplines like automatic control and engineering systems. From the point of view of the human computer interaction applied to these disciplines it is necessary to add usability engineering and cognitive ergonomics. This integrated framework is an example of human-centred design on automation systems. The main goal of this work is the application of a cognitive ergonomic guideline for supervisory control in order to improve the efficiency of a sugar mill interface design.

    Today’s society is undergoing constant changes and this is reflected in the way the working world is structured. There is an increasing need of qualified professionals having to face changes and prove effective competencies dealing with the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In this sense, the 21st Century university should offer students the suitable learning tools to become successful professionals. With this goal in mind the Tunning Project aims at implementing active methodologies by enhancing content learning and competencies acquisition. In this paper, we include a comparative study of the efficiency of new learning methodologies across subjects, degrees and academic cycles and focus on the role of the ICTs in the learning process. Our objective is to assess the suitability of these new methodologies for technical subjects. Finally, we present a survey on professors’ willingness to implement active methodologies.

    This article presents the application of PBL (Project Based Learning) methodology in a subject called Projects within the degree of Industrial Organization (ETSEIATUPC) and includes a detailed feedback from students in terms of their “experiences and feelings” about such implementation. It is, therefore, a real project carried out by students in which they themselves assume responsibilities and, hence, perform an active role in their own learning process always following the guidelines set by the professor, who designs specific activities or recreates scenarios accordingly.

    En tareas de supervisión humana de sala de control industrial se aplican de forma genérica disciplinas como la seguridad y la ergonomía física para el diseño de la sala de control. Desde el punto de vista de la interacción persona-ordenador, a estas disciplinas hay que añadir la ingeniería de la usabilidad y la ergonomía cognitiva ya que aportan pautas para el diseño centrado en el usuario. Este artículo presenta una guía ergonómica de diseño para la mejora de la calidad de una interfaz de supervisión industrial.     This paper presents a generalization of the Internal Model Control (IMC) approach to feedforward control action generation. As is well known, one of the distinctive features of the IMC formulation is the possibility to distinguish between the nominal and uncertain situations. However the consideration of the presence of uncertainty for the feedforward part of the controller is not as simple as that for the feedback one. In this sense, what is proposed in this paper provides a more systematic way of addressing a robust feedforward design. In addition, being one of the major drawbacks of the Internal Model Control to have to deal with stable systems, the generalization presented here allows for unstable plants as well as unstable disturbance models.

    En los actuales sistemas de control distribuido el operario en la sala de control se integra dentro de un grupo de trabajo especializado en la tarea de supervisión. Los ámbitos de aplicación en sala de control son muy diversos: control de tráfico aéreo, control de transporte metropolitano o ferroviario, control de plantas nucleares o el control de plantas industriales (Noyes, Bransby 2001). Expertos como Sheridan y Parasuraman, que llevan años trabajando en el paradigma de la supervisión humana sobre sistemas automatizados, acuñan un nuevo término relacionado con la interacción entre personas y subsistemas automatizados (Human-Automation Interaction) (Sheridan., Parasuraman, 2006).

    The aim of this paper is to develop and implement a progressive project to evaluate the current teaching/learning process in our universities. We will also consider the fact that in order to measure and certify the acquisition of cross curricular competencies, such as being able to search for specific information, working in a group, etc., we will have to identify the roles and responsibilities of the teaching professional in the team involved in the courses: Subject Head, Student Body Tutor, Project Co-ordinator and Head of the Centre's teaching plan. We also include a sample of the teaching/learning process divided into four phases: Reflection, Active methodologies plan, Execution and Assessment. Next, we describe the application of this approach inside the current Engineering Degree curriculum in the Vilanova i la Geltrú's Higher School of Engineering (Technical University of Catalonia). We will include examples of the use of PBL (Problem-/ Project-Based Learning) and Cooperative Learning in subjects in the MsC Engineering curricula Automation and Industrial Electronics Engineering in two High Schools at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). Through these experiences we will illustrate the conjoining and coordinating of subjects and how the competencies of our students are measured in order to make academic changes much easier and, therefore, give us more confidence in facing the imminent European Higher Education convergence.

    The purpose of this communication is to show an additional advantage of the well known guide for start and stop modes, GEMMA, that should motivate its use as well as to introduce the consideration of the human operator as an integral part of the automation procedure. The inclusion of the human operator as well as his interplay with the automation device needs some guidelines that can be drawn from joining the GEMMA structured approach and some concepts borrowed from cognitive ergonomic theory and human-computer interaction. Finally, this paper shows some examples of humanmachine interfaces (industrial panel, interface display screen).

    Este trabajo muestra las experiencias en el ámbito del diseño de interfaces con el objetivo de acercar la ergonomía cognitiva y la ingeniería de la usabilidad a la interacción mediante webcam, en sustitución del ratón convencional. El trabajo muestra la valoración de funcionalidades de prototipos, así como la valoración de carga mental realizada mediante el método NASA-TLX, la respuesta de los usuarios mediante un cuestionario de satisfacción, y propuestas para la generación de métricas de usabilidad.

    The instructional feedback model establishes a parallelism among a feedback control automated system and the relationships between the teacher/instructor and the student/learner. In such a model the teacher/instructor is assumed to be the controller or provider of energy to the system to be controlled (the student’s/learner skills and competences on a specific subject). The instructional feedback is a closed loop model that relies on receiving feedback from the students/learners and to generate different actions to modify its learning performance. In this communication the idea of instructional feedback is reviewed and slightly reformulated highlighting the necessity and importance of another feedback loop that has to be closed on the student/learner side as well as providing the means for this. On the conventional instructional feedback model the feedback is received at the teacher/instructor side, whereas it is, on the author’s opinion, at the student side that has to be closed in order to be effective.

    This communication presents a collaborative experience between four Spanish centers: the School of Engineering (ETSE) and the Sports Services Area (SAF) both from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) jointly with two centers of the Technical University of Catalonia, the higher school from Vilanova i la Geltru (EPSEVG) and the higher school in Terrassa (ETSEIAT). The idea behind this collaboration is to explore the possibility of role engineering education and project development for engineering students. The basic principle of such projects is the identification of the corresponding roles associated with the different parts that can be found on current social/industrial activity.

    Día a día aparecen nuevas tecnologías que pueden aplicarse, directa o indirectamente, en la prestación de servicios de tele-asistencia. Las TIC, Tecnologías de la Información i Comunicaciones, no son una excepción. Disponer de herramientas que permitan evaluar el comportamiento de dichas tecnologías, previa su implantación en el entorno de explotación, supone una enorme ventaja. Las redes de transporte de conmutación óptica de ráfagas, OBS, ofrecen una alternativa en el transporte masivo de datos en entornos inteligentes. A continuación se presenta un simulador de redes OBS desarrollado por el grupo de Servicios y Redes de Banda ancha del departamento de Ingeniería Telemática de la Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya.

    El artículo analiza los problemas de accesibilidad que actualmente presentan los artículos científicos en soporte digital. El estudio se centra en los aspectos de facilidad de uso del contenido de los documentos digitales según la forma en que se publiquen, sin entrar en el estudio de los distintos sistemas de recuperación. Se analizan los dos formatos más utilizados para la publicación de artículos científicos en soporte digital: HTML y PDF, estudiando el desempeño lector en relación a la presencia de sumarios o de tablas internas o vinculadas. El estudio se ha realizado con dos colectivos: 30 sujetos ciegos, usuarios de Jaws, contactados gracias a la mediación de la Fundación ONCE, y 30 sujetos no ciegos, profesores del Departamento de Biblioteconomía y Documentación de la Universidad de Barcelona. El estudio muestra que la localización de los datos contenidos en tablas se ve facilitada en documentos HTML por la inclusión de un sumario que vincule con la tabla, así como la inclusión de tablas completas en el cuerpo del documento HTML facilita la actividad lectora por parte de los usuarios ciegos. A nivel metodológico la presente investigación aporta dos novedades relevantes respecto a la literatura existente en los estudios de usabilidad con ciegos: estudia la usabilidad del formato PDF y es un test de usabilidad cuantitativo; este último hecho dificulta su comparación con la mayoría de artículos publicados.
