"Inhabited intervals" is a research about the transition space in collective housing, specifically about the intermediate space located on the way from home to the street. After the work done by Team 10 between the fifties and the seventies about the "threshold's concept" and the "in-between space" in order to improve the collective housing as well as our cities, it seems that the "inhabited intervals" have been forgotten. The big increase in house prices has reduced these spaces to the minimum and slowly they have become a marginal and peripheral element of current architectural projects, being transformed in the wasteland of our housing. This is how this research was born: as a claim for this space and as a research to discover what has remained of Team 10's legacy by analyzing how these spaces are nowadays projected and occupied. This thesis pretends to classify some locations - built between 1990 and 2007- by presenting them as a catalogue or open taxonomy that will allow us to figure out the rules that transform an undefined space into a lively and busy one. To do so, we have visited these spaces in order to discover how they were lived by their inhabitants. The work that we present today is the result of the research of the data and the experiences obtained during these trips. The main characters of this work are not the authors of the projects neither the projects but the inhabitants and their daily moments lived in the "in-between space". Therefore, this is a research on the daily architecture and its inhabitants, on how they occupy and live these intervals. At the same time, the thesis wants to check if these spaces are able to improve our homes and even our cities by expanding and mixing the living that takes place in the house and in the street. About the methodology, we have used ethnographers and anthropologists working systems applied to define a particular social behaviour. Therefore this thesis is the result of combining a field work - that uses a qualitative and phenomenological method based in the experience and observation of the space and the interviews to its inhabitants - with the data obtained from comparing the situations found (the real ones) with the ones projected on the paper (the desired ones). Therefore, the reader will find an introduction of the object being studied as well as its history followed by the description and analysis of the different inhabited intervals types to end up concluding that a new way of enjoying the inhabited intervals is possible. Through the sketch and the explanation of the data obtained in the field work that analyzes the drawing of a particular moment in the space, we obtain valuable information on how this space is lived even though we can only rely on the different objects found and on the experiences explained by its inhabitants. This study leads us to a new vision: the lived space against the imagined or empty one and allows us to have a new perspective and to obtain new conclusions. This is how we discover some of the keys to stimulate the creation of the inhabited intervals and how this thesis invites us to imagine a new way of living in community that still does not exist.

This research intensifies a inclusive gaze on the architectural program and their combinations. The program as a material that is able to produce a more active and connected architecture. To ask more about the effects than the supports, with the same attitude as in the cinema we asked about the movie and not about the screen. Design the events and the moments. The acts and their relations. The program as a matter that manages the architecture like connector between our actions and ambitions and the world we inhabit. The program to overcome the stable and absorb the worrisome. To overcome the object and integrate the unlikely. Programmatic interdependence's between stable spatial structures linked with the blurred boundaries of human activities. The juxtapositions as a connection material that synchronize the contemporary man dynamics with its existing context. Build stories and moments. Working with the apparent invisibility of uses. With the transparency of life and the intangibility of relationships. This research intended to stop talking for a moment's space to discuss about the program. Or talk about space from another perspective, from the angle of the actions. Not from any human actions but the actions that occur in the architectural supports. Approaching the spaces through events. The look on the informal program interdependencies evidence sets, by reflecting on the differences between the physical limits of spatial structures and boundaries -much more diffuse and fluid- from human activities. The juxtapositions with their interdependencies, emphasize the value of the effectiveness of the actions of those above formal order configurations, generating appropriate relationships that weave a complex net of truly contemporary urban dynamics. Combinations and programmatic juxtapositions stimulate simultaneously all relational capacity of the project. A relationship that bind to the contemporary world of information constantly overlapping. The malleability of the program optimizes the relationship of human actions with the physical matter of the project. This research aims to ultimately give the program the prestige that belongs as project material. And detecting the potential of incorporating this material, evidencing the ability of this relational and effectiveness of the interaction between events and spaces. Ultimately, to continue supporting the events in a juxtaposition world.

Research and experience ¿Urban catalysts. Against indifference¿ is a piece of work about public space that has been developed through research and experience. It¿s an exploration with the intention of discovering how the urban spaces of relation of all times have been built throughout the years; a thesis encouraged by the interest of understanding what makes a public space become a place of relation between people. The personal experience of living the transformation of Barcelona, thanks to the result of the inoculated renovation of the public space, has lead me to recognize the importance of the empty space in the city. This is a work that tries to infiltrate in the recreational dimension of the cities, trying to figure out their unwritten and hidden laws. It¿s an open research motivated by the personal verification of the renovation of my own city and not limited to the study of Barcelona but willing to understand what the origin of the cities¿ public spaces is. Transitory intensity ¿Urban catalysts. Against indifference¿ is an atlas of public urban situations; a research that, in a moment where cities and landscapes are being gobbled up by this indifferent and generic urbanism, I would like to reveal the value of intensity as a reference to build identity spots; a non-exclusive study that tracks down the uncertain boundaries of urban intensity, that understands that in many occasions the intensity becomes apparent too in a transitory way. ¿Skin is the deepest.¿ P Valery This thesis doesn¿t propose a futile discussion between formal or informal attitude, a dilemma between confronted architectural options, but tries to discover the capacity of transformation of what the anthropologist M. Delgado calls, in his book The public anim, ¿aesthetics of the event¿. ¿Therefore, urban anthropology should be presented more like the anthropology that defines the urbanity as a way of life: made of dissolutions and simultaneities, made of cold and minimalist negotiations, made of weak and scarce bonds connected to each other to the infinite, but in whom the short circuits are always present. This urban anthropology would be mostly similar to public spaces anthropology.¿ In this thesis we tried to investigate what is the catalyst of all urban related things, the aesthetics of the event. We did a meticulous and hyper-realistic study that wants to recognize and grant the actual transformation value of what is capable of activating the public space. Small scale We tried to bring urbanism closer to the smaller scale; to focus our attention on apparently insignificant situations, to discover the power of catalyzing the public space of the lighthearted actions, both the projected ones and the spontaneous and ordinary ones. Hyper-realistic drawing The key to understand the true urban importance of apparently irrelevant elements and actions to convert the public spaces of the cities has been to measure and to draw them. We have been able to discover the transcendence of these evasive situations through the attempt of representing and fulfilling them in an almost obsessive, precise and hyper-realistic way. We have tried to make a research about the non-muscled part of architecture and public space, a similar attempt, to R. Sennett proposes in his book Flesh and stone: ¿When L. Mumford wrote The city in History, he recounted four thousand years of urban history by tracing the evolution of the wall, the house, the street, the central square ¿basic forms out of which cities have been made. My learning is lesser, my sights are narrower, and I have written this history in a different way, by making studies of individual cities and specific moments- moments when the outbreak of a war or a revolution, the inauguration of a building, the announcement of a medical discovery, or the publication of a book marked a significant point in the relation between people¿s experience of their own bodies and the spaces in which they lived.
