    This paper presents a real-time testbed based on reconfigurable devices able to transmit and receive data at different operating frequencies, which are dynamically configured. The main objective of this paper is to provide an advanced and realistic framework where the performance of algorithms and policies for spectrum selection in Cognitive Radio (CR) networks can be fully evaluated in a real-time environment. In particular, this paper focuses on a CR belief-based decision making framework particularized for different observation strategies that decide when measurements are carried out to predict the radio environment dynamism. Results show that an accurate selection of an observation strategy is a key element for the trade-off between achieved performance and measurement requirements.

    Dynamic Spectrum Access is a key capability of Cognitive Radio (CR) networks to increase the efficiency in the use of the available spectrum resources. In this respect, this paper focuses on the spectrum selection problem when a number of radio links has to be established in a CR network to support applications with different bit rate requirements. A novel strategy based on a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is proposed, whose target is to maximize a reward function that reflects the suitability of the available spectrum blocks to the application requirements. The proposed strategy combines partial observations of the interference state in the different spectrum blocks together with a statistical characterization of the interference dynamics. Thanks to this feature, the performance comparison of the algorithm against different reference strategies reveals that it achieves a very similar performance than a strategy operating under full knowledge of the real interference state of all the spectrum blocks, while at the same time it has much less requirements in terms of measurement needs and associated signaling.

    The knowledge of the statistical characterization of the primary user activity can make more efficient the spectrum selection techniques, which are a key technology to improve the Cognitive Radio (CR) systems performance. In order to provide this kind of primary user information, Radio Environment Maps (REM) data bases has been proposed. This paper presents a REM-based Real Time Testbed designed to validate and exploit the dynamicity of the REM data base to improve the performances of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) algorithms in the context of cognitive radio. The implemented testbed is a flexible HW/SW tool able to use spectrum measurements in licensed bands and validate the Cognitive Radio performance of the secondary users, without causing any interference on these primary users. In particular, the RRM strategy under study in the testbed envisages the optimization of the spectrum selection policy when secondary users, with different service profiles, access opportunistically a set of channels during the inactivity periods of primary users. The selection is done taking as input the statistical characterization of the primary user activity, which will be stored in the REM data base, and the secondary user service profiles.

    In this paper a comparative study of two measurement campaigns carried out in Barcelona, Spain, and Pozna, Poland, to identify spectrum occupancy in different bands, is presented. In both cases the measurement setup was harmonized to obtain comparable results. The problem of efficient noise floor estimation was also considered and a pragmatic approach that takes into account both internal and ambient noise has been proposed. Obtained results show significant amount of unused spectrum, with similar results for both sites when analyzed globally (average spectrum occupancy of 27% in Pozna¿ and 22% in Barcelona). On the contrary, when going to the detailed analysis of some specific bands, more relevant differences are obtained. These differences have been observed mainly in the Terrestrial TRunked RAdio (TETRA) bands that in Poland are also used by Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 450, as well as in the bands of theGlobal System for Mobile communications (GSM) due to the effects of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) refarming in the 900 MHz band.

    This paper presents a testbed platform to demonstrate and validate spectrum opportunity identification and spectrum selection functionalities in Opportunistic Networks (ONs). The hardware component of the testbed is based on reconfigurable devices able to transmit and receive data at different operating frequencies, which are dynamically configured. The software component has been developed to perform the creation and maintenance of ON radio links, including spectrum opportunity identification and selection decision making as well as all the necessary signaling to support the ON operation. Results presented in the paper validate the implementation conducted at the laboratory and illustrate the reconfigurability capabilities of the ON links under different conditions.

A novel strategy based on a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is proposed combining partial observations of the interference state together with a statistical characterization of the interference dynamics. In this context, the use of an efficient observation strategy is a key element to account for the trade-off between achieved performance and measurement requirements. For that purpose, the aim of the paper is to propose and evaluate different observation policies for the POMDP-based spectrum selection framework. Results show that the proposed framework is able to achieve very similar performance than a strategy operating under full knowledge of the interference state requiring much less associated signaling.

    This paper presents a testbed platform to demonstrate and validate spectrum opportunity identification and spectrum selection functionalities in Opportunistic Networks (ONs). The software component has been developed to perform the creation and maintenance of ON radio links, including spectrum opportunity identification and selection decision making as well as all the necessary signaling to support the ON operation. Therefore, the presented platform provides a powerful tool for testing different algorithms in real operational radio environments under various interference conditions, thus enabling to gain deeper insight into the performance of algorithmic solutions, beyond the purely theoretical analyses based on models and/or simulations. Results presented in the paper validate the implementation conducted at the laboratory and illustrate the reconfigurability capabilities of the ON links under different conditions.

    In this work we are interested to investigate how the Geostationary (GEO) satellite can be used to employ efficiently High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology supporting Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) in a scenario in which the terrestrial network is not available. An exhaustive simulation campaign has been carried out with the aim to determinate the Satellite-HSDPA (S-HSDPA) performances in different radio channel conditions. In particular, a Good/Bad Channel model has been taken into account to achieve a specific radio information and to be able to evaluate the maximum date rate that can be obtained by S-HSDPA.

    The goal of this research work is to investigate how efficient High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) can be in supporting Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) in scenarios in which the terrestrial coverage is not available. Specifically, we propose to implement an effective Radio Resources Management (RRM) policy into the HAP Radio Network Controller (H-RNC), whose main aim is to increase the overall system capacity. The proposed technique achieves its goal by dynamically selecting the most efficient multicast transport channel in terms of power consumption, chosen amongst Dedicated Channel (DCH), Forward Access Channel (FACH), and High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH). Advantages deriving from the joint use of channels belonging to different categories are exploited. Results achieved when using the proposed RRM are quite manifest and witnesses to the necessity of providing such a feature when deploying integrated HAP/Terrestrial platforms supporting MBMS services.

    Teaching on wireless telecommunication networks faces a number of challenges, such as the fact that contents are dynamic in nature, the resulting framework is complex and heterogeneous, design principles can largely vary from one system to another, etc. In order to cope with these challenges, novel and advanced methodologies have to be implemented so that the expectations placed by students and industry are met. In this context, this paper will stress the relevance of exploiting the always-evolving wireless technologies to introduce concepts to students in a non-disruptive way, so that novel concepts associated to newly introduced technologies can be presented on top of previous concepts associated to previously existing technologies. In addition, the integration of theoretical contents and practical experience as key enablers of the learning process will also be stressed.

    Teaching on wireless telecommunication networks faces a number of challenges, such as the fact that contents are dynamic in nature, the resulting framework is complex and heterogeneous, design principles can largely vary from one system to another, etc. In order to cope with these challenges, novel and advanced methodologies have to be implemented so that the expectations placed by students and industry are met. In this context, this paper will stress the relevance of exploiting the always-evolving wireless technologies to introduce concepts to students in a non-disruptive way, so that novel concepts associated to newly introduced technologies can be presented on top of previous concepts associated to previously existing technologies. In addition, the integration of theoretical contents and practical experience as key enablers of the learning process will also be stressed.

    Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS), introduced in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), have the aim to allow transmissions from a single source entity to multiple destinations. From the radio perspective, MBMS foresees both pointto- point (PtP) and point-to-multipoint (PtM) transmission mode, supported by Dedicated, Common, and Shared channels. The High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), analyzed in this paper, can guarantee a higher data rate through the introduction of High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH), thus improving the performance of MBMS transmissions. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of the User Equipment (UE) speed on the maximum number of users that the HS-DSCH can support for MBMS applications. In particular, two different mobility profiles are taken into account (Pedestrian and Vehicular) and the obtained results are validated by considering different transmission power levels, cell coverage sizes and bit rates.
