    The demand for higher data rates, capacity and better Quality of Service (QoS) is constantly growing; therefore, there is a pressing need for efficient use of wireless network resources. In this context, the application of Cognitive Radio (CR) principle has emerged as a solution to the problem of spectrum scarcity. In this respect, this paper presents an algorithm that enables multi-band spectrum selection for wireless applications under interference variations in the available spectrum blocks. The algorithm is formulated as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) targeting the maximization of a reward function that captures how suitable each allocated spectrum block is for the data transmission in each radio link depending on the application bit rate requirements.

    This paper presents a testbed platform to demonstrate and validate spectrum opportunity identification and spectrum selection functionalities in Opportunistic Networks (ONs). The hardware component of the testbed is based on reconfigurable devices able to transmit and receive data at different operating frequencies, which are dynamically configured. The software component has been developed to perform the creation and maintenance of ON radio links, including spectrum opportunity identification and selection decision making as well as all the necessary signaling to support the ON operation. Results presented in the paper validate the implementation conducted at the laboratory and illustrate the reconfigurability capabilities of the ON links under different conditions.

    Dynamic Spectrum Access, based on the Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm, is a promising solution to improve the currently inefficient spectrum utilization. In this respect, this paper deals with the spectrum selection problem when a number of radio links has to be established in a CR network. A novel strategy based on a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is proposed combining partial observations of the interference state together with a statistical characterization of the interference dynamics. In this context, the use of an efficient observation strategy is a key element to account for the trade-off between achieved performance and measurement requirements. For that purpose, the aim of the paper is to propose and evaluate different observation policies for the POMDP-based spectrum selection framework. Results show that the proposed framework is able to achieve very similar performance than a strategy operating under full knowledge of the interference state requiring much less associated signaling.

    The knowledge of the statistical characterization of the primary user activity can make more efficient the spectrum selection techniques, which are a key technology to improve the Cognitive Radio (CR) systems performance. In order to provide this kind of primary user information, Radio Environment Maps (REM) data bases has been proposed. This paper presents a REM-based Real Time Testbed designed to validate and exploit the dynamicity of the REM data base to improve the performances of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) algorithms in the context of cognitive radio. The implemented testbed is a flexible HW/SW tool able to use spectrum measurements in licensed bands and validate the Cognitive Radio performance of the secondary users, without causing any interference on these primary users. In particular, the RRM strategy under study in the testbed envisages the optimization of the spectrum selection policy when secondary users, with different service profiles, access opportunistically a set of channels during the inactivity periods of primary users. The selection is done taking as input the statistical characterization of the primary user activity, which will be stored in the REM data base, and the secondary user service profiles.

    Dynamic Spectrum Access is a key capability of Cognitive Radio (CR) networks to increase the efficiency in the use of the available spectrum resources. In this respect, this paper focuses on the spectrum selection problem when a number of radio links has to be established in a CR network to support applications with different bit rate requirements. A novel strategy based on a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) is proposed, whose target is to maximize a reward function that reflects the suitability of the available spectrum blocks to the application requirements. The proposed strategy combines partial observations of the interference state in the different spectrum blocks together with a statistical characterization of the interference dynamics. Thanks to this feature, the performance comparison of the algorithm against different reference strategies reveals that it achieves a very similar performance than a strategy operating under full knowledge of the real interference state of all the spectrum blocks, while at the same time it has much less requirements in terms of measurement needs and associated signaling.

    In this paper a comparative study of two measurement campaigns carried out in Barcelona, Spain, and Pozna, Poland, to identify spectrum occupancy in different bands, is presented. In both cases the measurement setup was harmonized to obtain comparable results. The problem of efficient noise floor estimation was also considered and a pragmatic approach that takes into account both internal and ambient noise has been proposed. Obtained results show significant amount of unused spectrum, with similar results for both sites when analyzed globally (average spectrum occupancy of 27% in Pozna¿ and 22% in Barcelona). On the contrary, when going to the detailed analysis of some specific bands, more relevant differences are obtained. These differences have been observed mainly in the Terrestrial TRunked RAdio (TETRA) bands that in Poland are also used by Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 450, as well as in the bands of theGlobal System for Mobile communications (GSM) due to the effects of Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) refarming in the 900 MHz band.

    In this work we are interested to investigate how the Geostationary (GEO) satellite can be used to employ efficiently High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology supporting Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) in a scenario in which the terrestrial network is not available. An exhaustive simulation campaign has been carried out with the aim to determinate the Satellite-HSDPA (S-HSDPA) performances in different radio channel conditions. In particular, a Good/Bad Channel model has been taken into account to achieve a specific radio information and to be able to evaluate the maximum date rate that can be obtained by S-HSDPA.

    The owned spectrum allocation policy, in use since the early days of modern radio communications, has been proven to effectively control interference among radio communication systems. However, the overwhelming proliferation of new operators, innovative services and wireless technologies during the last years has resulted, under this static regulatory regime, in the depletion of spectrum bands with commercially attractive radio propagation characteristics. An important number of spectrum measurements, however, have shown that spectrum is mostly underutilized, thus indicating that the virtual spectrum scarcity problem actually results from static and inflexible spectrum management policies rather than the physical scarcity of radio resources. This situation has motivated the emergence of Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) methods based on the Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm, which has gained popularity as a promising solution to conciliate the existing conflicts between spectrum demand growth and spectrum underutilization. The basic underlying idea of DSA/CR is to allow unlicensed (secondary) users to access in an opportunistic and non-interfering manner some licensed bands temporarily unoccupied by the licensed (primary) users. Due to the opportunistic nature of this principle, the behavior and performance of a DSA/CR network depends on the spectrum occupancy patterns of the primary system. A realistic and accurate modeling of such patterns becomes therefore essential and extremely useful in the domain of DSA/CR research. The potential applicability of spectrum usage models ranges from analytical studies to the design and dimensioning of secondary networks as well as the development of innovative simulation tools and more efficient DSA/CR techniques. Spectrum occupancy modeling in the context of DSA/CR constitutes a rather unexplored research area. This dissertation addresses the problem of modeling spectrum usage in the context of DSA/CR by contributing a comprehensive and holistic set of realistic models capable to accurately capture and reproduce the statistical properties of spectrum usage in real radio communication systems in the time, frequency and space dimensions. The first part of this dissertation addresses the development of a unified methodological framework for spectrum measurements in the context of DSA/CR and presents the results of an extensive spectrum measurement campaign performed over a wide variety of locations and scenarios in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain, to identify potential bands of interest for future DSA/CR deployments. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study of these characteristics performed under the scope of the Spanish spectrum regulation and one of the earliest studies in Europe. The second part deals with various specific aspects related to the processing of measurements to extract spectrum occupancy patterns, which is largely similar to the problem of spectrum sensing in DSA/CR. The performance of energy detection, the most widely employed spectrum sensing technique in DSA/CR, is first assessed empirically. The outcome of this study motivates the development of a more accurate theoretical-empirical performance model as well as an improved energy detection scheme capable to outperform the conventional method while preserving a similar level of complexity, computational cost and application. The findings of these studies are finally applied in the third part of the dissertation to the development of innovative spectrum usage models for the time (in discrete- and continuous-time versions), frequency and space domains. The proposed models can been combined and integrated into a unified modeling approach where the time, frequency and space dimensions of spectrum usage can simultaneously be reproduced, thus providing a complete and holistic characterization of spectrum usage in real systems for the analysis, design and simulation of the future DSA/CR networks.

    The goal of this research work is to investigate how efficient High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) can be in supporting Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) in scenarios in which the terrestrial coverage is not available. Specifically, we propose to implement an effective Radio Resources Management (RRM) policy into the HAP Radio Network Controller (H-RNC), whose main aim is to increase the overall system capacity. The proposed technique achieves its goal by dynamically selecting the most efficient multicast transport channel in terms of power consumption, chosen amongst Dedicated Channel (DCH), Forward Access Channel (FACH), and High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH). Advantages deriving from the joint use of channels belonging to different categories are exploited. Results achieved when using the proposed RRM are quite manifest and witnesses to the necessity of providing such a feature when deploying integrated HAP/Terrestrial platforms supporting MBMS services.

    This deliverable (DR9.2) describes the radio resource management, joint radio resource management and advanced spectrum management strategies developed in each of the tasks of WPR.9 during the second year of study. The proposed algorithms together with the results of evaluation in scenarios identified in the deliverable DR9.1 are presented. A special attention is given to JRRM in heterogeneous networks, OFDMA spectrum management and measurements, and game-theoretical optimization of cognitive networks.

    Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS), introduced in Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), have the aim to allow transmissions from a single source entity to multiple destinations. From the radio perspective, MBMS foresees both pointto- point (PtP) and point-to-multipoint (PtM) transmission mode, supported by Dedicated, Common, and Shared channels. The High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), analyzed in this paper, can guarantee a higher data rate through the introduction of High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH), thus improving the performance of MBMS transmissions. The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of the User Equipment (UE) speed on the maximum number of users that the HS-DSCH can support for MBMS applications. In particular, two different mobility profiles are taken into account (Pedestrian and Vehicular) and the obtained results are validated by considering different transmission power levels, cell coverage sizes and bit rates.

    Teaching on wireless telecommunication networks faces a number of challenges, such as the fact that contents are dynamic in nature, the resulting framework is complex and heterogeneous, design principles can largely vary from one system to another, etc. In order to cope with these challenges, novel and advanced methodologies have to be implemented so that the expectations placed by students and industry are met. In this context, this paper will stress the relevance of exploiting the always-evolving wireless technologies to introduce concepts to students in a non-disruptive way, so that novel concepts associated to newly introduced technologies can be presented on top of previous concepts associated to previously existing technologies. In addition, the integration of theoretical contents and practical experience as key enablers of the learning process will also be stressed.

    This paper is aimed at presenting the real-time High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) emulator that has been developed in the framework of the AROMA project. Real-time emula- tors allow reproducing realistic scenarios to test algorithms, strategies, protocols and applications under realistic condi- tions. Therefore, real-time emulators constitute a powerful tool to evaluate the end-user's Quality of Experience (QoE), which could not be achieved by means of o -line simulations. The presented emulator is integrated in the AROMA real- time testbed, which has been developed to provide a frame- work for demonstrating the bene ts of the common radio re- source management algorithms as well as the proposed end- to-edge Quality of Service (QoS) management techniques developed for all-IP beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless net- works in the context of the AROMA project. This paper presents a qualitative description of the developed tool, em- phasizing some interesting implementation details that may result helpful in the development of similar emulation plat- forms. Some illustrative results, showing the capabilities of the developed tool, are also presented and analyzed.
