    Este estudio considera el fruto del arbusto tara como fuente sostenible de agentes curtientes y propone alternativas a las sales minerales y extractos vegetales para uso comercial. Específicamente, en la parte I del estudio diversos procesos de modificación física y química se han desarrollado con el fin de obtener una tara modificada con un mayor porcentaje de taninos que permita mejorar su capacidad de curtido. Varios procesos de extracción acuosa a diferentes temperaturas se han desarrollado y optimizado con el fin de disminuir la astringencia y facilitar la penetración de las moléculas de tanino a través de la estructura de cuero.

    Current Spanish and European legislation intends to reduce the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) used in industrial processes. The presence of volatile organic compounds in the leather industry arises from the chemicals used in the various stages of the leather manufacturing process. An environmental goal of tanners is to reduce or eliminate VOCs, though not by lowering the quality of their leather products. Since the existing literature contained very little information about the presence of VOCs in leather, the first contribution of this thesis involves analytical methodology, specifically qualitative characterization, which is essential to identify the tanning processes where VOCs are introduced.The HS-SPME-GC-MS method is an innovation in leather analysis introduced by this thesis. The solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a sample preparation technique used for the extraction of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds that is becoming widely accepted as the technique of choice for many applications and that can be smoothly connected to gas chromatography. The main advantages of this technique are speed, sensitivity, and the fact that it requires no sample handling or solvent extraction. Other advantages include the fact that the concentration and the extraction are reached simultaneously and that it enables on-site extraction of the analyte, even without a prior destruction of the sample. This technique is thus very innovative for application to the analysis of leather samples.The work developed in this thesis includes significant contributions, which are detailed below:Development of a new HS-SPME-GC-MS method with internal standard deuterate to detect and identify volatile organic compounds emitted by leather. This method enables a simpler and faster determination of the qualitative and semi-quantitative composition of the organic compounds in the samples.This shows that the concentration of VOCs in the leather is not stable and tends to decrease over time due to volatility losses. Proper health and safety conditions in the workplace minimize these harmful effects on workers'health.Development of a method for determining dimethylfumarate (DMFU) in leather and footwear through HS-SPME-GC-MS, since there was previously no official method for the detection of this substance. Due to health problems in Europe caused by the presence of dimethylfumarate in consumer goods such as shoes or sofas, the National Institute of Consumption prohibited the sale of any product containing dimethylfumarate that might come into contact with skin.Formulations of finishings were compared using aqueous products with a lower amount of solvent composition. The VOCs emissions from the finished article, the fastness tests on leather, and the total emission of the chemicals against the production of a given company were also evaluated.It was investigated the correlation between the tanning process and the volatile organic compounds obtained in the analysis of leather to explore the source of the problem.This study shows that with the proper application of leather manufacturing chemicals, and reliance on substances with less solvent composition, VOC emissions are significantly reduced. In addition, the amount of volatiles reaching the end consumer, which is currently already very low, can still be further limited.

    La legislació europea i espanyola vigent pretén que les empreses redueixin la quantitat de compostos orgànics volàtils que usen en els seus processos industrials. L’origen dels compostos orgànics volàtils en la industria de la pell es troba en les substàncies químiques utilitzades en les diferents etapes del procés de fabricació del cuir. Un dels objectius dels adobers és intentar eliminar o reduir el seu ús i obtenir pells de la mateixa qualitat respectuoses amb el medi ambient. Com que la literatura contenia molt poca informació sobre la presència de COVs a la pell, el primer que ha aportat aquesta tesi és metodologia analítica, sobretot per la caracterització qualitativa, que és essencial per identificar als processos d’adoberia on s’introdueixen els COVs. El mètode HS-SPME-GC-MS és una innovació en el món de l’adoberia introduïda en aquesta tesi. La microextracció en fase sòlida (SPME) és una tècnica de preparació de mostra que s’utilitza per l’extracció de compostos orgànics volàtils i semi volàtils, que està guanyant molta acceptació com a tècnica de preferència per a moltes aplicacions i es pot acoblar perfectament a la cromatografia de gasos. És una tècnica que té com avantatges principals; la rapidesa, sensibilitat, no requereix manipulació de mostra, sense ús de dissolvent, aconsegueix l’extracció i concentració de forma simultània i permet l’extracció de l’analit “in situ”, sense inclús prèvia destrucció de la mostra. Amb tot això es considera molt innovador aplicar la tècnica per l’anàlisi de mostres de pell. Entre els treballs realitzats en aquesta tesi destaquen: S’ha desenvolupat un nou mètode HS-SPME-CG-MS amb patró intern deuterat per detectar i identificar els compostos orgànics volàtils que emeten els articles de pell. Aquest mètode permet determinar d’una manera més simple i ràpida la composició qualitativa i semi quantitativa de les substàncies orgàniques volàtils presents en les mostres. S’ha comprovat que la concentració de COVs a les pells no és estable i tendeix a la disminució amb el temps degut a les pèrdues per volatilització. Unes condicions adequades de seguretat i higiene en l’àmbit laboral en les empreses del sector adober minimitzen els efectes nocius sobre la salut dels treballadors. S’ha desenvolupat un mètode per determinar dimetilfumarat (DMFU) en pell i calçat mitjançant HS-SPME-CG-MS, ja que no hi havia fins el moment cap mètode oficial per la determinació d’aquesta substància. Arrel d’una problemàtica de salut sorgida a Europa provocada per la presència de dimetilfumarat en articles de consum com sabates o sofàs, l’Institut Nacional de Consum, va prohibir la comercialització de qualsevol article que pel seu ús estigués en contacte amb la pell i que contingués dimetilfumarat. S’han comparat formulacions majoritàriament d’acabats que utilitzen productes aquosos amb menys quantitat de solvent en la seva composició. S’han valorat les emissions de COVs de l’article acabat, els assajos de solideses de les pells i l’emissió a l’atmosfera dels productes utilitzats en funció de la productivitat de l’empresa. S’ha investigat la correlació entre el procés d’adobament de la pell i els compostos orgànics volàtils obtinguts en l’anàlisi d’aquestes que permet incidir en l’origen del problema. Com a síntesi de les conclusions del treball es pot afirmar que amb una aplicació adequada dels productes i l’ús de substàncies amb menys solvent a la seva composició, s’aconsegueix reduir considerablement l’emissió de COVs del l’article fabricat i també la quantitat de volàtils que arriben al consumidor final, que actualment ja és molt reduïda però encara es podria limitar més.

  • Determination of dimethylfumarate in leather and footwear by solid-phase micro extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

    In the last two years, Europe has experienced a rise in skin allery and dermatitis due to goods and Asian provenance that have been treacted with dimethylfumarate (DMFU). Accordingly,laboratories in the leather and foodwear sectors have been obliged to develop analytical methods to determine the presence of this substance given de absence of an official method. The ban on DMFU as laid down in Decision 2009/251 of the European Union establishes a maximun concentration of DMFU in products of 0.1 mg/Kg. A simple nom-destructive rapid method based on manual headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) and gas cromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)is proposed to detect DMFU in leather and footwear. Thereafter, the samples which DMFU is detected are analysed by solid-liquid extraction (SLE) with acetone after which DMFU is quantitatively determined by GC-MS. The quantitative method in validated in terms of linearity, precision, sensivity and recovery; demostrating its reliability. Quantification of this performed used naphthalene-D8 as internal standard. The detection limits are 0.005 mg/Kg and 0.03 mg/Kg for the HS-SPME-GC-MS and SLE-GC-MS methods, respectively. Given that these limits are bellow the maximun limit of 0.1 mg/Kg imposed by the European Union, the proposed methods are suitable for determining DMFU content in real samples.
