    Existing methods to detect and measure heavy-hitters (frequent items) are either lightweight but too inaccurate and memory-demanding (e.g. those relying on sampling), or too heavyweight to be deployed at high speeds. In this paper, we present several sampled-based algorithms to the problem and show that they exhibit two critical features. First, despite sampling, our schemes provide accurate results and detection guarantees that are independent of the traffic properties. Second, they are provably shown to require memory that is not only constant regardless of the amount of traffic observed and its composition, but a small factor above the theoretical minimum. Thus, unlike most solutions, ours scale in both space and speed; the use of sampling allowing to trade off performance for cost. As we will see, our algorithms build on similar principles. The first two use a constant sampling probability. Upgrading the second to support a variable sampling rate and to adjust it depending on the traffic intensity and CPU available yields our third scheme; a highly versatile solution that performs quasi-optimally and requires minimal configuration.

    In recent years, the emergence of the cloud computing has increased the need of resources to support cloud-based services. Therefore, the role of the data centers has become essential. Following the growing of services, the power consumption has increased dramatically, while the need for energy savings and CO2 reduction has become a requirement for a sustainable world. The All4Green project fosters collaboration between energy providers (EP), data centers (DC) and customers/end users (EU) in order to provide energy sav-ings and CO2 emissions reduction. In this architecture, the contract binding EPs and DCs includes flexibility terms in order to allow the collaboration in the form of discounts that can be transferred also to DC customers, if they are willing to collaborate.

    This work describes a novel approach for the reduction of energy consumption in data centres (DCs) that will yield benefits both in terms of running costs and its environmental impact. The method is based on the introduction of collaborative interactions and flexibility clauses in contracts between all the DC ecosystem entities. The included entities are all the actors along the energy production¿consumption chain, from the energy provider to the Information Technology customer. The collaborative approach also integrates the interaction between federated DCs. In this paper, we find a detailed description of the architecture that enables interaction between the DC ecosystem parties, which is designed to be progressively deployed, allowing traditional and `greened¿ services to coexist, and without modification of the existing DC automation and framework systems.

    Packet sampling is needed to measure network traffic scalably at high speeds. While many sampled-based measurement techniques have been developed in the recent past, most approaches select packets uniformly, without regard to their size. We discuss that this behavior can negatively impact the performance of tools, and present a sampling scheme that, taking into account packet sizes, overcomes several weaknesses of classic sampling methods. While the idea behind of our approach is conceptually not new, the way we propose to implement it yields a cost-effective solution that is suitable at very high speeds. To see the advantages of the approach, we study the problem of estimating traffic volumes. Our analysis and experimental evaluation with real traffic traces show that sampling considering packet sizes can improve the quality of measurements and make their accuracy less dependant on the properties of the traffic, at a small additional overhead compared to traditional methods.

    Detección y medida en tiempo real de flujos de elementos frecuentes en grandes poblaciones, escalable y sintonizable.

    Un "método" para la detección y medida de elementos frecuentes (que aparecen más veces que un determinado umbral en una población de elementos potencialmente muy grande, como pueden ser "registros" en una base de datos, o "paquetes" en redes de conmutación de paquetes. El método combina muestreo y el uso de funciones resumen (hash). Permite la detección de elementos frecuentes con alta probabilidad, en tiempo real, con tiempo de proceso reducido y determinista y con bajos requerimientos de memoria. En particular, requiere un número de contadores inferior e independiente al número de elementos distintos presentes en la población. Estas características permiten su aplicación en entornos de bases de datos y en redes de alta velocidad donde es interesante detectar y medir grandes flujos de tráfico en tiempo real.
