    Water scarcity has become an issue worldwide due to various such as rapid population growth and booming industrialization. With growing demand of water resources, the traditional methods of wastewater treatment should be improved to supply a better quality of effluents. The stringent environmental standards imposed by many countries in response to the increase of water consumption are also an important challenge to be faced in the wastewater treatment. Since many years, industrials working in the field of the wet textile processing have implemented different treatments for the wastewater purification. The simplest way to improve the effluents quality is the application of a physic-chemical treatment which can achieve the full color removal, although the organic matter removal is insufficient to accomplish the current regulations. The biological treatment with activated sludge provides a high efficiency of organic matter removal, whereas water decoloration is in general insufficient. In this case, a tertiary treatment to remove color is required. In the recent years, there has been an increasing tendency towards the application of membrane treatments for the removal of organic pollutants in wastewater. In particular, the combination of membrane technology and activated sludge biological plants is nowadays an attractive option for the textile wastewater treatment which enables the reuse of the treated effluents. This chapter includes an overview of the main technologies for the textile wastewater treatment, from the conventional physic-chemical and biological treatment to the more recent membrane bioreactors. Their efficiency and feasibility are discussed as well as the possibility of reuse

    La climatología semi-árida de Burkina Faso (África occidental) es propensa a variaciones estacionales extremas, encadenando largos periodos de sequía con fuertes lluvias concentradas entre los meses de mayo y octubre. Las deficiencias tanto en el suministro de agua como en su calidad, especialmente en zonas rurales, supone la principal causa de enfermedades causadas por parásitos intestinales, con particular incidencia en la población infantil. Este estudio está localizado en una zona rural al norte del distrito de Yako, donde una de cada tres familias no tiene acceso a agua potable. Se centra en el tratamiento de agua mediante la utilización de semillas de la planta moringa oleífera (introducida en el país por comerciantes siglos atrás) como coagulante natural para la eliminación de la turbidez y de las partículas en suspensión de las aguas superficiales. A este tratamiento le sigue un proceso de desinfección química con cloro generado in situ vía electrólisis utilizando una fuente autónoma de suministro eléctrico. Se propone un sistema sostenible de purificación de agua el cual puede sustituir reactivos químicos por productos naturales mediante el empleo de un proceso eficiente energéticamente y de fácil operación.

    he presence of aromatic amines in effluent from dyeing processes of the textile industry is an added problem to the high coloration typical of this type of effluent. The main objective of the present work was to eliminate these two problems simultaneously by electrochemical treatment using bath solutions containing three azo dyes. For the analysis of amines, a liquid¿liquid extraction method was developed as an easier and faster alternative to the method described in the standards and widely used in analytical laboratories. Four amines (aniline, o-toluidine, 4-chloroaniline and 4-aminobiphenyl) were detected by GC-MS in the residual azo dye baths. A total amine concentration of between 2.5 and 1 ppm was detected, 4-aminobiphenyl being the main compound. Both residual colour and amines were removed by electrochemical treatment carried out at three current densities (3, 24 and 40 mA/cm2). At 24 mA/cm2, more than 90% of colour removal was achieved, and the total amine concentration was reduced to below 0.15 ppm.

    In this work, the feasibility of reusing water and salt from reactive dyebaths after electrochemical decolourization was evaluated. Dyeing series of ten reuses with three reactive dyes (Navy Blue Procion H-EXL, Crimson Procion H-EXL and Yellow Procion H-EXL) were carried out (individually and in a trichromie) and color differences and total organic carbon values were measured to study how the successive reuses affect the quality dyeing. The first reuse produced dyeings with low colour differences with respect to a standard dyeing. In the subsequent reuses, colour differences increased until they reached a constant value at the 4th or 5th reuse, following a similar behavior to the organic matter content. At this point, it is determined the percentage of dye increase that allows for continuous dyeing of acceptable quality for the textile industry. To obtain dyeings with acceptable color differences (DE ⁄ CMC (2:1) 6 1) independent of the number of consecutive reuses, a 30% increase in blue dyestuff and 10% for red dyestuff must be added, whereas in the case of yellow dyeing, it was not necessary to increase the dye amount after subsequent reuses. In each dyeing, this process allowed savings of 70% of water and an average of 60% for salt.

    En este artículo se realiza un estudio de viabilidad económica para revalorizar terrenos de cultivo en pueblos de montañas de la zona del valle de Aran lo que representa una alternativa a la gran distribución alimentaria. Dicha alternativa revaloriza el producto local y crea empleo de forma directa en la zona. Además ofrece una rentabilidad mayor de la actual a los agricultores, así como un producto de mayor calidad al consumidor, más fresco y más barato. Una de las consecuencias de esta propuesta es que contribuye a reducir el impacto medioambiental al promocionar el consumo local, evitando al máximo el transporte de los productos. Además hemos demostrado que es posible realizar un negocio local, aumentando la rentabilidad de los agricultores, reduciendo el precio de los alimentos para el consumidor y aumentando la calidad del producto.

    Electrochemical techniques offer many advantages for the treatment of industrial effluents. These processes are clean, operate at room temperature, and in most cases, do not need the addition of reagents (as in the case of reactive dyeing effluents). In particular, the electrochemical treatment of textile effluents is an efficient method to remove colour. In this work, diverse synthetic effluents containing reactive dyes were treated in an electrochemical cell with Ti/PtO x electrodes. The efficiency of the process to remove colour and the use of an additional UV irradiation were evaluated. Once the conditions were established in synthetic effluents, they were applied on two types of exhausted reactive dye baths collected from a cotton mill. Instead of the effluent discharge, another possibility is to reuse the decoloured effluents for a new dyeing process. In this sense, diverse experiments were carried out and conditions for the effluents reuse were established. The reuse of dyeing effluents implies an important reduction of the salt and water consumption as well as a reduction of the salinity of the discharged effluents.

    Burkina Faso (Western Africa) is one of the poorest countries of the world. Its semi-arid climatology is prone to extreme variations depending on the season, chaining long drought periods with heavy rainfalls concentrated in May and October. The lacks in the supply and quality water, especially in rural areas, mean the main cause of illness for intestinal parasites, with especial incidence in the infantile population. The study is located in the rural area of Yako, where one of every three families not has access to potable water sources. It is focused on the purification water treatment by the use of seeds of the plant Moringa Oleifera as natural coagulant to eliminate the turbidity and suspended particles of superficial waters. This treatment is followed by a disinfection process with chlorine produced by electrolysis with a small source of power supply. A sustainable system of water purification is suggested which replaces the use of chemical reagents by natural products, in a energetically self-sufficient process of easy operation. // Burkina Faso (África Occidental) es uno de los países más pobres del planeta. Su climatología semi-árida es propensa a variaciones extremas dependiendo de la estación, encadenando largos periodos de sequía con fuertes precipitaciones concentradas en los meses de mayo y octubre. Las carencias en el abastecimiento y calidad del agua, principalmente en zonas rurales, suponen la principal causa de enfermedades por parásitos intestinales, con especial incidencia en la población infantil. El estudio está localizado en la zona rural de Yako, donde una de cada tres familias no tiene acceso a fuentes de agua potable, y se centra en el tratamiento de potabilización de agua embalsada mediante el uso de semillas de la planta Moringa Oleifera como coagulante natural para eliminar la turbidez y las materias en suspensión de aguas superficiales. Este tratamiento va acompañado por un proceso de desinfección con cloro producido por electrólisis con una pequeña fuente de alimentación eléctrica Así, se propone un sistema de potabilización sostenible que sustituye la utilización de reactivos químicos por productos naturales, en un proceso autosuficiente energéticamente y de fácil operación.

    La situación actual de la cadena de suministro agrícola, ha provocado un encarecimiento excesivo de los productos en su recorrido del productor al consumidor. Las condiciones del mercado, y la influencia de las grandes distribuidoras a derivado en que el agricultor es el eslabón con menos poder en esta cadena. El sistema logístico y de producción planteado en este artículo, reúne características, que benefician a todos los implicados (agricultores, consumidores y medio ambiente) en el sistema. Se pretende ofrecer una alternativa al agricultor, que podrá comercializar de forma más directa y sencilla sus productos, obteniendo mayores beneficios que con el actual sistema de distribución. Además se presentará un estudio de viabilidad económica de una plataforma logística de proximidad para el suministro de producto fresco productor- consumidor.

    Biological treatment of a textile effluent after electrochemical oxidation of reactive dyes  Open access

    In this work, a synthetic textile effluent containing a reactive dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 4) was treated in an electrochemical cell with titanium covered by platinum oxide (Ti/PtOx) electrodes to remove color. The discolored effluent was mixed with other textile mill process effluents (scouring, bleaching, washing, etc.), according to the rate of each effluent in the mill, and was submitted to biological treatment (activated sludge plant). Two biological plants were run simultaneously to evaluate the influence of oxidant products generated during the electrochemical treatment. The final chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal in both plants was 65 to 72%. The yield of the activated sludge plants was not affected by the addition of 10% of the discolored dyeing effluent (even when oxidants products were not removed), which indicates that the previous electrochemical treatment do not produce inhibition effects on the biological plant. However, in the case of direct addition of the discolored effluent, the biological treatment plant required a longer adaptation period. In addition, the electrolytic respirometry tests showed that all the biodegradable organic matter was removed, which implies that the yield in organic matter removal was the maximum possible for this type of treatment.

    El estudio que se desarrolla a continuación tiene el objetivo de analizar los sectores y procesos de reciclaje de los residuos generados por un vehículo a lo largo de sus vida útil. Se pretende detectar posibles lagunas existentes en la actualidad y proponer mejoras organizativas según las carencias detectadas. Este estudio se realiza en definitiva, analizando el sector automovilístico y el reciclaje que se lleva a cabo en el mismo, teniendo en cuenta la aplicación de la Directiva Europea 2000/53 en el Estado Español y repasando los procesos de reciclaje de los diferentes componentes de un vehículo. Mediante las carencias detectadas en dichos procesos se propone l amejora de la gestión de los residuos en los talleres con la creación de un SIG (Sistema Integrado de Gestión)

    Las técnicas electroquímicas ofrecen muchas ventajas para el tratamiento de los efluentes industriales. Dichos procesos son limpios, trabajan a temperatura ambiente y en la mayoría de los casos no necesitan de la adición de reactivos (como es el caso de los efluentes de tintura con colorantes reactivos). Concretamente, los tratamientos electroquímicos de efluentes textiles son métodos eficientes para la eliminación de color. Con el tratamiento electroquímico, las moléculas de colorante se oxidan fragmentándose en otras más pequeñas. Los productos incoloros que se producen son tratados en una planta de tratamiento biológico convencional. En este trabajo, se trataron diversos efluentes que contenían colorantes reactivos en una celda electroquímica con electrodos de Ti/óxidos de Pt. Se evaluó la eficacia en la eliminación del color de la técnica combinada con irradiación UV. Además, se observó que los efluentes tratados no producen efectos de inhibición en una planta biológica. Se evaluó también el rendimiento de un tratamiento biológico posterior. Como alternativa al vertido del efluente, otra posibilidad es su reutilización en nuevos procesos de tintura. En este sentido, se llevaron a cabo diversos ensayos y se establecieron las condicones de reutilización. Se observó que los efluentes de lavado se pueden reutilizar fácilmente y que incluso se pueden reutilizar los efluentes de tintura, lo cual implica una importante reducción en el consumo de sales y agua, así como una disminución de la salinidad de los efluentes descargados.

    Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was applied to the analysis of a selected group of non halogenated solvents -all of them classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs)- that may be present in diverse industrial wastewaters. Two different fibres (100-PDMS and 85-PA) were selected as SPME adsorbents. The extracted volatile organic compounds were analysed by high resolution gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS), following the EPA method 624. Calibration curves and method deletion limits obtained for these solvents using the two SPME fibres are reported. The 100-PDMS fibre provided better sensitivity, but the saturation was reached at a lower concentration than 85-PA fibre. The first fibre (100-PDMS) was applied to the analysis of several textile wastewaters. The method detection limits obtained with this fibre were: 0.1-0.3 μ/L for ethylbenzene m-xylene p-xylene toluene and diisobutyl ketone. In addition SPME and Headspace (HS) detection limits were compared.

    En este trabajo se utiliza la cromatografía de gases acoplada a la espectrometría de masas para determinar la causa del olor desagradable que se desprende de un tejido estampado. El análisis se lleva a cabo directamente sobre el artículo textil, empleando la técnica de inyección del espacio en cabeza, que consiste en una extracción sólido-gas seguida de la inyección del aire directamente en la columna cromatográfica. En el tejido analizado, se detectó la presencia de dos aminas volátiles. Concretamente,el olor desagradable se atribuyó principalmente a la presencia de trimetilamina, compuesto cuyo olor recuerda al que emana del pescado en descomposición. También se detectó la presencia de hexametilentretramina (o hexamina), aplicada en algunos productos de acabado.

    In this work, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was used to determine the cause of an off-odour emitted by a printed textile. The analysis was carried out directly on the textile, by using the head space technique, which consists on a solid-gas extraction followed by the injection of the air directly in the chromatographgic column. In the printed textile, the presence of two aromatic amines was detected. Concretely, the off-odour was attributed to the presence of trimethylamine, compound which presents a fishy odour. Also, the presence of hexamethylenetetramine (or hexamine), applied in some finishing products, was detected.

    Dans ce travail, la chromatographie en phase gazeuse couplée avec la spectrométrie de masses a été employée pour déterminer la cause de l'odeur désagréable libérée par un tissu imprimé. L'analyse est effectuée directement sur l'article textile, en employant la technique de l'espace en tête, lequel consiste en une extraction solide-gaz suivie d'une injection de l'air directement dans la colonne chromatographique. Deux amines volatiles ont été détectées sur le tissu analysé. En concret, la mauvaise odeur a été attribuée à la présence de triméthylamine, composé avec une odeur caractéristique similaire à celle du poisson en état de décomposition. Aussi, la hexamethylenetetramine (ou hexamine) a été détectée, laquelle est appliquée dans certains produits de finissage.
