The industrial car manufacturers see in the high battery price an important obstacle for an electric vehicle mass selling, thus mass production. Therefore, in order to find some cost relieves and better selling opportunities, they look and push forward to find profitable second battery uses. This study presents, by showing different results and applications, the main goal as unachievable and indicates that most of the possibilities analyzed have such a low, if not negative, revenue for being considered a profitable business. Even in a supposed case of a suitable second use business, the buying price of old electric vehicles batteries would have decreased by a 90%, so there would not be a substantial price reduction applicable to new batteries. Therefore, no mass selling will occur and the ¿glorious¿ cycle will be broken.

Purpose ¿ The road transport sector is the second biggest CO2 emissions contributor after energy generation. In urban environments, its impact is increased due to the worse combustion engine driving efficiency. It is thought that electric mobility might bring some relief to big cities¿ polluted air. At the same time, car manufacturers are searching for second battery applications in order to reduce its manufacture cost and make electric cars achievable for most people. This paper seeks to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach ¿ This study presents an economic and environmental approach of an electric taxi fleet charged with second use electric car batteries. The environment impact comes from the possible CO2 emissions reduction due to the use of electricity instead of fuel and from reusing the old electric car batteries instead of brand new ones. On the economic side, apart from the financial and consumption costs and profits, the Kyoto protocol trades permit an economic evaluation of the benefits achieved. Findings ¿ The results show that improvements come together with the type of electric generation technology, but it is clear that if both sectors (road transport and energy generation) are treated together, the emissions might substantially drop. Originality/value ¿ The originality of this article comes from taking into account two environmental issues in the project: the reuse of ¿old batteries¿ from electric cars to enlarge their useful life and the gas emissions analysis.

Assessment is at the centre of learning process, and is what therefore determinates the process of teaching-learning. It is because of this, the assessment tasks must be designed with several criteria which guarantee its quality. In the present work eight criteria are shown which will allow designing assessment activities coherent with the demanded requirements for the adaptation of EHEA. The innovation group GRAPA, of RIMA project from UPC, have performed a rubric which allow, in a quick way, to auto-evaluate and design assessment tasks. In addition, some tasks are shown as examples.

Burkina Faso (Western Africa) is one of the poorest countries of the world. Its semi-arid climatology is prone to extreme variations depending on the season, chaining long drought periods with heavy rainfalls concentrated in May and October. The lacks in the supply and quality water, especially in rural areas, mean the main cause of illness for intestinal parasites, with especial incidence in the infantile population. The study is located in the rural area of Yako, where one of every three families not has access to potable water sources. It is focused on the purification water treatment by the use of seeds of the plant Moringa Oleifera as natural coagulant to eliminate the turbidity and suspended particles of superficial waters. This treatment is followed by a disinfection process with chlorine produced by electrolysis with a small source of power supply. A sustainable system of water purification is suggested which replaces the use of chemical reagents by natural products, in a energetically self-sufficient process of easy operation. Human-Machine-Interfaces are with no doubt one of the constitutive parts of an automation system. However, it is not till recently that they have received appropriate attention. It is because of a major concern about aspects related to maintenance, safety, achieve operator awareness, etc has been gained. Even there are in the market software solutions that allow for the design of efficient and complex interaction systems, it is not widespread the use of a rational design of the overall interface system, especially for large scale systems where the monitoring and supervision systems may include hundreds of interfacing screens. It is on this respect hat this communication provides an example of such development also by showing how to include the automation level operational modes into the interfacing system. Another important aspect is how the human operator can enter the control loop in different ways, and such interaction needs to be considered as an integral part of the automation procedure as well as the communication of the automation device. In this paper the application of design and operational modes guidelines in automation are presented inside an educational flexible manufacturing system case study.

There are many papers that present the problems of educational videos: need of a high number of resources to create them, excess of information in the majority of videos, gaps of information between videos and the rest of materials of the courses, etc. This paper introduces the concept ‘low-cost educational video’, which attempts to solve to a large extent the problems that have been identified in the educational videos. To this end, an empirical research is conducted with 487 students and various lecturers and professors in three undergraduate degrees: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management (in face-to-face as well as semi-distance modalities), and Aeronautical Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain). In order to achieve this goal, we introduce the process and the required resources for the creation and the diffusion of these low-cost educational videos. The results are analysed taking a literature-based questionnaire as a starting point and within the principles of good practice in higher education framework. The main research findings revealed an improved student motivation and an increase of the perceived efficiency in the learning and teaching processes, without substantially raising costs.

Today’s society is undergoing constant changes and this is reflected in the way the working world is structured. There is an increasing need of qualified professionals having to face changes and prove effective competencies dealing with the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In this sense, the 21st Century university should offer students the suitable learning tools to become successful professionals. With this goal in mind the Tunning Project aims at implementing active methodologies by enhancing content learning and competencies acquisition. In this paper, we include a comparative study of the efficiency of new learning methodologies across subjects, degrees and academic cycles and focus on the role of the ICTs in the learning process. Our objective is to assess the suitability of these new methodologies for technical subjects. Finally, we present a survey on professors’ willingness to implement active methodologies.

This article presents the application of PBL (Project Based Learning) methodology in a subject called Projects within the degree of Industrial Organization (ETSEIATUPC) and includes a detailed feedback from students in terms of their “experiences and feelings” about such implementation. It is, therefore, a real project carried out by students in which they themselves assume responsibilities and, hence, perform an active role in their own learning process always following the guidelines set by the professor, who designs specific activities or recreates scenarios accordingly.

The present article introduces the main qualitative and quantitative results obtained in a pilot study of eportfolio implementation in two different subjects offered in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC). In particular, such teaching innovation took place within the Technical Industrial and Aeronautics Engineering School (ETSEIAT) curricula. And our results seem to indicate that the e-Portfolio can be viewed as: 1) a complementary tool for student’s assessment and 2) a perfect follow-up device to check student’s competences development (both generic and specific) throughout their degree studies. The useful data gathered allow us to generalize our findings and therefore, consider its implementation in the second cycle of Industrial Organization (IO) Engineering as well as the rest of degrees taught at the UPC.
