    This paper describes the application of model-based predictive control (MPC) techniques to the supervisory flow management in large-scale drinking water networks including a telemetry/telecontrol system. MPC is used to generate flow control strategies (set-points for the regulatory controllers) from the sources to the consumer areas to meet future demands, optimizing performance indexes associated to operational goals such as economic cost, safety storage volumes in the network and smoothness of the flow control actions. The designed management strategies are applied to a model of a real case study: the drinking water transport network of Barcelona (Spain)

    In this paper, the problem of flooding management using hybrid model predictive control is presented and applied to the Ebro River in Spain. The Ebro River presents flooding episodes in the city of Zaragoza during spring when snow melts in the Pyrenees. To avoid flooding in populated areas, some land outside the city is prepared for flooding. This paper presents a control approach to determine and fix the level of flooding in pre-established zones by controlling side gates that determine the water input to the land to be flooded. Finally, several scenarios are used to validate the performance of the proposed approach

    In this paper, a methodology for the optimal management of a combined irrigation and water supply system based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed. A controloriented modelling methodology for this type of systems is presented as well. MPC is used to generate flow control strategies from the sources to the consumer and irrigation areas to meet future demands with appropriate flows, optimizing operational goals such as network safety volumes in dams and flow control stability in actuators (valves, gates and pumps). The case study of Guadiana river is used to exemplify and verify the proposed optimal management methodology. Results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed modelling and control methodologies.

    In this paper, the problem of fault diagnosis in wind turbines will be addressed applying a setmembership approach. Fault detection is based on the use of parity equations and unknown but bound description of the noise and modelling errors. Fault detection test is based on checking consistency between measurements and the model by finding if there is parameter in the feasible parameter set (approximated by a zonotope) that is compatible with modelling and noise bounds. The fault isolation algorithm is based on analyzing the observed fault signatures on-line and matching them with the theoretical ones obtained using structural analysis. Finally, the proposed approach will be tested using the wind turbine benchmark proposed in the context of the WT FDI competition.

    Flooding prevention and control in rivers is a important topic in the river management. This is also the case in the basin of the river Ebro in Spain. In the past, the Ebro basin experienced several floods. In order to reduce the flood hazard in a given area, the local water administration usually sets up several flood-controlled areas for being able to store the excessive water volume during periods of extreme rainfall. In order to control the flows to and from the flooding zones, hydraulic control structures have been put in place. Through these actions, it is planned to have a significant reduction of the flood risk in the basin. Recent simulations of these past events in a hydrodynamic river model showed that flooding could have been significantly reduced and even avoided if the hydraulic structures would have been controlled in a different way. Therefore, the main interest of this paper is to test a different control strategy than the one currently adopted. Due to the specific nature of the flooding problem, a model predictive control (MPC) strategy (Maciejowski, 2001) seems to be the most suitable option. In this paper, the problem of flooding control at the Ebro River in Spain is addressed using MPC. Finally, several scenarios are used to validate the performance of the proposed approach. In Section 2, the problem addressed in this paper is described. In Section 3, a control oriented model is proposed. In Section 4, the control approach based on an MPC is described. Results of the application of the proposed control approach using a Virtual reality simulator are presented in Section 5. Finally, in Section 6, the main conclusions are presented.

    In this paper, a decision-support tool named HYDROPTIM has been developed that allows the flow management in a large scale water systems including reservoirs, open channels for water transport, water treatment plants, pressurized water pipe networks, tanks, flow/pressure control elements and a telemetry/telecontrol system. Predictive optimal control is used to generate flow control strategies from the sources to the consumer areas to meet future demands with appropriate pressure levels, optimizing operational goals such as network safety volumes and flow control stability. The tool allows as well to build the network model graphically and then to automatically generate the model equations used by the predictive optimal controller. Additionally, the tool can work off-line (in simulation) and on-line (in real-time mode). The case study of Guadiana River is presented to exemplify the control results obtained using the tool.

    This paper proposes the use of predictive optimal control as a suitable methodology to manage efficiently transport water networks. The predictive optimal controller is implemented using MPC control techniques. The Arrêt-Darré/Arros dam-river system located in the Southwest region of France is proposed as case study. A high-fidelity dynamic simulator based on the full Saint-Venant equations and able to reproduce this system is developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK to validate the performance of the developed predictive optimal control system. The control objective in the Arrêt-Darré/Arros dam-river system is to guarantee an ecological flow rate at a control point downstream of the Arrêt- Darré dam by controlling the outflow of this dam in spite of the unmeasured disturbances introduced by rainfalls incomings and farmer withdrawals.
