Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are nonheme iron-containing enzymes catalyzing the dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. LOX catalytic activity depends on the presence of iron in the active site and the iron removal is also able to affect the membrane binding properties of the enzyme.
