This paper addresses design of a robust active sliding mode controller (SMC) for nonlinear base-isolated building structures in the presence of unknown seismic excitations, parameter uncertainties and actuator dynamics. A simple adaptation law is introduced to obtain upper bounds for the unknown seismically excited nonlinear functions.
