Abstract
This project focus on multi-spectral atmospheric observation by means of lidar (laser radar) and
the development of advanced signal processing tools for the retrieval of optical and physical
aerosol parameters in the framework of the European Lidar Network (EARLINET) and GALION
(Global Atmospheric Watch Aerosol Lidar Observation Network)-GEOSS (Global Earth
Observation System of Systems).
The proposed objectives are:
1) Multi-spectral atmospheric lidar observation. Departing from the RSLAB (Remote Sensing
Lab., UPC) 6-channel (3 elastic and 3 Raman) lidar station (ultraviolet, visible, and nearinfrared
bands) this objective is two-fold: on one hand, the inclusion of a depolarizationmeasurement
channel at the 532-nm wavelength; on the other hand the lidar system is to be
exploited on a regular coordinated basis in the EARLINET and in ground-based
calibration/validation of CALIPSO (NASA-CNES, 2006) and ADM-Aeolus (ESA, 2009)
satellite missions. Key data products are the spatio-temporal distribution/climatology of
aerosol properties at local, regional, and continental scales for their impact on climate
change and air quality, and the characterization of episodes of environmental relevance
(e.g., dust outbreaks).
2) Development of advanced signal processing lidar tools for the retrieval opto-atmospheric
aerosol products (level-1 data products): Atmospheric boundary-layer height (ABL) and
profiles of the aerosol extinction/backscatter coefficients.
3) Research on the retrieval of microphysical-atmospheric aerosol products (level-2 data
products): Retrieval of aerosol microphysical parameters (particle-size distribution, refractive
index) from lidar data, including synergies with sun-photometer data; application of these
products to Earth radiative-budget computations.
