Cracking is the main distress mechanism that takes place in the failure of road pavements. This has led to a new approach in the pavement cracking study based on the cracking propagation mechanisms from the pavement tensional state and bituminous mixtures resistance to cracking propagation. This project is aimed to analysing the cracking resistance of mixtures at different temperatures to determine the effect of load and temperature. In order to achieve these objectives two new tests developed at the Road Research Laboratory of the Technical University of Catalonia will be applied: one to evaluate the cracking resistance of bituminous mixtures under slow and monotonic loads, FENIX test; and the other, under rapid and cyclic loads, EBADE test. The cracking propagation process of the mixture as a function of the tensional state and fracture energy obtained from the tests will also be analysed. The aim of this project is thus to model the cracking propagation in order to develop new design methods that allow to design pavement structures with improved service performance and durability.
