This project meets the challenge of "Health, Demographic Change and Welfare", by searching for scientific and technical solutions that may lead to a
significant improvement in the visual health of a population segment, who, as pointed out by the European program H2020, is becoming increasingly
large due to demographic changes and longer life expectancy. The results of the project will have greater impact on those people that need intraocular
lens implants to compensate for the ageing effects of the crystalline lens (presbyopia, cataracts) or to allow sharp vision in a long segment of object
distances after surgically removing the crystalline. The optical techniques concerning image formation and image analysis are essential in the statement
and development of the research plan.
We define three lines of research work, which match the main objectives of the project:
- Intraocular lenses with extended depth of focus: advanced design and proof of concept. With the design of such lenses, we aim to obtain a focal
segment in the image space, equivalent to a functional continuous range of focusing distances in the object space. This would represent a remarkable
improvement in comparison with the image formation obtained by means of multifocal lenses, which only provide sharp vision for two or, at the most,
three distances (distant, intermediate, and near vision). In addition to the lens design, the project aims to develop a proof of concept to validate the
proposal in the laboratory.
- Optical (in-vitro) and clinical (in-vivo) analysis of multifocal intraocular lenses of current interest. Characterization techniques. The project aims to
provide a greater insight and knowledge about the properties of modern multifocal intraocular lenses, not only of single lenses, but also after they are
implanted in the eye. This increased knowledge paves the way for the assessment of the product, in their functional aspects, such as their optical quality,
as well as the post-surgical evolution of the patient.
- Digital ocular image. Image enhancement and analysis of degraded eye fundus images, more especifically, due to the multifocal imaging or refractive
surgery effects. The project aims to contribute to the eye fundus digital photography obtained by means of specific clinical instrumentation. Among the
possible degradations, we consider those caused by multifocal lens implants, refractive surgery, and asymmetry. These problems may alter the images
used for the computer-assisted early diagnosis of retinal pathologies that are more and more frequent among the population (Aged macular
degeneration, galucoma, diabetes, etc.). The project will develop digital image algorithms for the improvement and restoration of digital fundus images.
This will make it easier for the specialist to estimate the pathological risk, the diagnosis and follow up of the patient.
The project and the group of research are multidisciplinar and is of interest to six organisations. Simultaneous development of the three lines of research
work is possible. The group collaborates with other groups of research in other countries. A predoctoral scholarship is required. In addition to scientifictechnical
achievements, the project involves educational activity in research addressed to PhD students of the scientific team.
