Abstract
The EU Horizon 2020 has as one of its priorities the extension of wireless technologies beyond 60 GHz. The use of
frequency bands beyond 60 GHz is not restricted to communications, but it also find uses in radar, remote sensing andimaging with applications in security, non-destructive testing, earth observation among others. The implementation of
such systems implies the development of new knowledge that will allow the design, manufacturing, integration of the
radiating system and their interaction with the propagation medium.
Projects in this area require a multisciplinary approach that encompasses fundamentals of electromagnetic, numerical
modeling and solving, advanced design and fabrication techniques, measurement capabilities and system design and
inception. All these capabilities must be supported by the proper facilities in terms of computing, fabrication and
measurement.
The challenges that must be tackled with the knowledge produced in the project derive from the need to overcome the
high free space losses at millimeter and submillimeter waves. For this reason it is required to use directive antennas, but
for the nature of the system requirements they must be reconfigurable, that is, with the possibility to steer the beam or
else based in multielement antennas. These goals must be achieved with the simplest and most cost effective RF
design, and also considering the manufacturing and integration of the whole system and the effects of the radio channel.
Parallel to this goal, the analysis and accurate channel modelling of the radiopropagation channel is also necessary.
Specifically the project proposes to reach a sufficient advancement to make three concrete designs at the 60-75 GHz ,
94 GHz and 300 GHz bands with applications in communication, security and imaging. The reason for choosing these
three demonstrators is twofold. In one hand the put into value the expertise and capabilities of all the groups involved in
the project, and in the other it allows tackling the challenges of manufacturing and integrating these type of systems. Two
micromanufacturing technologies will be explorored: LTCC and silicon.
