In the last few years we have witnessed a substantial increase in the amount of data acquired from our environment through simulation
processes and an increasing number of sensors (in satellites, airplanes, vehicles, hospitals, and even in mobile devices) that provide
different kinds of data (we will focus on images, 3D models and volume datasets) at a variety of levels of scale, from the microscopic (e.g.
energy levels in protein docking) to planetary scale (e.g. digital models of the Earth) through models of the human body (e.g. medical
imaging), human behaviour (e.g. crowd simulation) and human environments (e.g. buildings, cities).
All applications dealing with this kind of models face a common problem due to the variety and complexity of the data. In essence,
applications require efficient algorithms to analyse, reconstruct, filter, repair, and simplify 3D models, in order to generate appropriate
representations suitable for simulation and interactive visual analysis, so that users can grasp this vast complexity as easily and as
naturally as possible.
This project addresses the problem of finding new mechanisms for the processing, presentation, manipulation and interaction with huge
datasets, that maximize (through appropriate graphical renditions) their ease of comprehension, and that do that in an efficient way, both in
terms of computing effort and of resources needed.
The success of the resulting applications will depend, aside from the effectiveness of the visual analysis and on the ease with which the
users can interact with the data. Therefore, the project also deals with the development of new interaction techniques. We will advance
interaction techniques based on capturing user movements and gestures (which is especially indicated in virtual reality applications) and
explore the capabilities of new interaction devices, and find ways to exploit them in this context.
The general goals of the project, which cover visualization, modeling, simulation and interaction areas, face the Economy and Digital
Society challenge, addressing the priority topics related with the development of applications for mobile devices, Big Data solutions, smart
cities, and digital contents.
Despite the cross-subject nature of the tasks we propose, our specific goals are oriented towards providing the required technologies to
facilitate the development of 3D applications targeting life quality improvement, both in health aspects (medical diagnosis, surgery
simulation, drug development) and human environments (crowd simulation, urban planning, cultural heritage, energy analysis).
