Abstract
The study of ocean processes related to Marine Ecosystems, Climate Change and Marine Geohazards requires the existence of sufficiently long
real time series of key parameters. The study of these series allows, first, to characterize the range of variability in each a particular region and,
secondly, to detect trends or changes that could be attributed to anthropogenic causes. A measurement program that allows systematic
monitoring of these variables should use oceanographic buoys or underwater laboratories located at singular points of the coast. The
development of wireless communication systems and the increasing potential for miniaturization of sensors, storage devices and data processing
have opened the door to a new generation of smart sensors networks which can be deployed spatially or geographically over the environment,
connected through communication networks. One of the main priorities of smart sensors networks is the data interoperability which is based on
open source software, allowing high quality data exchange (Infrastructure for Spatial Information Policy in Europe Directive). The MarInTech
thematic network wants to provide an area of study in which Spanish scientists and technologists, working in different branches within the field of
Marine Environmental Sciences, may share experiences on the development and design of these measurement systems. This will represent a
significant advance over existing devices, reducing the costs compared to existing solutions, designing an open standard environment and
providing the possibility of new applications. Therefore all these advances will reduce the technological dependence in this area
