Abstract
Nepal earthquake (Mw = 8.1, 25/04/2005, Mw = 7.1, 12/05/2015) and Lorca earthquake (Mw = 5.1, 11/05/2011) have shown the need for
more and better means for seismic risk prevention. The main goal of this proposal is the development of advanced tools for: 1) seismic
hazard assessment at regional level, 2) seismic micro-zoning of urban soils and 3) the study of the fragility and expected damage.
Objective 1 aims: i) the fractal study of precursory seismic series, ii) analysis of the directionality effects of horizontal components of
acceleration on the geometric mean of the maximum responses and iii) the influence of the azimuthal orientation of the building on the
expected damage. Seismicity predictive analysis applies to California as an adequate region for the study; for the analysis of directionality,
databases of the Iberian Peninsula, Mexico and Central America will be used and the analysis of the influence of the orientation of the
building on the damage will be performed on the basis of 3D models of buildings subjected to high quality records of well-documented
earthquakes. The purpose of Objective 2 is general but applications are intended in Barcelona because of the quantity and quality of
available data; it is proposed: i) mapping soils effects on a new seismic micro-zoning chart based on existing and new data that will be
collected to increase the resolution in areas affected by underground streams and watercourses; ii) perform laboratory testing and field
work to investigate the presence of noise and the frequency content in GPR records de-pending respectively on their grain and compaction
characteristics and moisture and water content; iii) to map fundamental periods of residential buildings and identify areas of increased
hazard by mean of its correlation with the soils map. Objective 3 deals with the theoretical and practical study of the seismic response of
buildings as well as its evolution in terms of damage; it is proposed: i) an empirical analysis of selected buildings, ii) a laboratory study of a
scale model for a framed steel structure and iii) computational structural analysis. The empiri-cal study involves monitoring the response to
ambient noise of existing buildings by means of devices allowing to record dynamic acceleration, velocity and displacement; displacement
measurements involve RAR technology that does not require enter the building; the scale mod-el will allow observing the periods of
vibration as related to simulated damage conditions and computational structural analysis will be used to study the dynamic response of
various types of buildings, the buildings selected for the empirical study and the scale model; special empha-sis will be done on
degradation processes and on structural damage that will be related to changes in the vibration periods. Thus, an important asset of this
proposal is to investigate the feasibility of establishing, through simple measures, the level of degradation and damage of a building once it
suffered the onslaught of an earthquake. The expected results will allow to propose a protocol for post-earthquake inspection of buildings
with an uncertain level of dam-age; this inspection procedure should consider the advantages and disadvantages of records in
displacement, velocity and acceleration, should advise on precautions to take before entering damaged buildings and to define the specific
actions that a careful analysis of the available information may suggest.
