Abstract
The TCP congestion control is reaching its limit of use in some critical scenarios that Future
Internet will have to face. Future Internet will be formed of highly heterogeneous networks,
such as networks composed of a multitude of interconnections between wired and wireless
links. The general goal of ARPASAT is to propose and develop a network architecture based
on explicit rate notification (ERN) techniques to improve the performance of data
transmission over integrated satellite-terrestrial networks using the Internet protocol stack
and including all variants of IP (IPv4 and IPv6) with IPSec. The design of the architecture to
be developed mainly affects the transport layer. In particular, there will be a special emphasis
on the design of the ERN congestion control algorithm of TCP, which must have the ability to
adapt to any range of link conditions. That is, the congestion control algorithm should be able
to use explicit information sent by the network devices, and if this information does not exist,
infer it. In this context, we should design two important aspects. In first place, a network
architecture that manages ERN devices, that is to say, devices capable of monitoring the transmission states of the network links. In second place, we must design the mechanisms to
notify these measures to the ends for a proper rate adaptation. This network architecture
should be designed to be deployed gradually over the Internet, allowing the application of
various congestion control algorithms and the coexistence of ERN and legacy devices.
Finally, it is intended to perform a validation of the project by means of simulation,
implementing the ERN control algorithm, creating a SDN prototype and designing a proper
test plan.
