CARMEN aims at developing coding and signal processing techniques for incipient wireless communication and sensor networks. Two major trends are appreciated in the current evolution of wireless networks. On the one hand, next generation of cellular systems will use radio interfaces with unprecedented high data rates to address the huge data traffic produced by future mobile applications. To satisfy
such demand, the radio interfaces will use new frequency bands located in the 10-300 GHz mmWave region, MIMO transceivers with wider bandwidths and higher number of transmit/receive antennas, unconventional waveforms to exploit fragmented spectrum allocations, and network densification through the use of heterogeneous wireless networks combining macro-, pico-, femtocells, relays and distributed antennas. On the other, many foreseen applications will use Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), i.e. networks with a huge number of lowcost devices, which are spatially distributed and work cooperatively to communicate information gathered from the monitored field through
wireless links. One of the main challenges that emerging WSNs should face is the optimization of the way they exchange and compute data in a distributed way. There are also important challenges related to the wireless connectivity. It is of paramount importance to reduce
the delay and complexity of the wireless connections to reduce power consumption.
The general objectives of CARMEN are the following:
* To develop advanced coding techniques for emerging wireless communication and sensor networks. Both analog Joint Source Channel Coding (JSCC) and emerging topics in digital coding will be considered. In particular, we will focus on hybrid analog-digital schemes for Gaussian sources and channels with memory, analog mappings for correlated sources in multiuser scenarios, digital joint source channel
coding for high rate transmissions, polar coding under secrecy constraints, and both digital and analog network coding.
* To develop advanced signal processing techniques for emerging wireless communication and sensor networks. Special efforts will be devoted to signal processing interference management techniques for densely deployed wireless networks. In particular, we will focus on
signal processing methods for unconventional MIMO transceiver architectures, improper signaling schemes for interference-limited scenarios, multiuser architectures for non-coherent transmissions, and distributed signal and information processing over networks and graphs.
* To carry out experimental evaluation of coding and signal processing techniques by means of Over The Air (OTA) transmissions and simulations. A wireless network testbed developed in previous projects will be upgraded to assess the specific algorithms developed within CARMEN incorporating state of the art hardware components. A salient feature of the CARMEN testbed is that it will be able to operate at
mmWave frequencies around 70 GHz. The testbed terminals will include synchronization and positioning capabilities to be deployed and operated autonomously in scenarios with mobility. Moreover, performance evaluation of the developed coding and signal processing techniques when applied to harsh wireless channels like the wireless optical intensity and the underwater channel will also be undertaken.
