In this project, our aim is to go-in-depth and to develop a new viewpoint on mathematics and engineering in society. We would focus the Spanish context, with all its complexity, and its relationship with the European and American context. Mathematics, pure and mixed ones, developed along the period we consider to the constitution of different disciplines during the XIX century, i.e. mathematics as we can see them today, engineering, architecture or physics. The scientific engineering was a process of convergence and fusion of the mathematical tradition and the artisan, mechanical or building practices. At the beginning, this was a European process, but it soon spread to East and American territories. Our research objectives are: A) the development of mathematics in the Iberian Peninsula in the XVI century; the process of algebraization of mathematics, with special attention to Pietro Mengoli; some aspects of the scientific contributions of Leibnitz; the origin and diffusion of the differential and integral calculus; the mathematical instruments; the civil and military training institutions; the mathematical courses from the XVII to XIX century, including those of Serrao Pimentel, Azebedo Fortes, Tosca, Lucuce, Cerdà, Padilla,Bails, and Calbó. B) Engineering and the scientific and technical heritage; the technological and scientific collections in Catalonia, at the technical schools, the science museums and the RACAB; Santponç and the steam technology c. 1800; the professional and scientific engineering; engineering and sustainability: the case of solar energy (Chili, United States, Greece, Russia, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, France, Spain); engineering and gender: pioneered experiences, mainly in Spain; comparative viewpoints: Portugal, France, Russia, Turkey, Colombia, Chili C) History of science and technology, and the scientific education; historical studies; experiences at the classroom. Our work would have relevant impact in the sense of the applied history, according to Heilbron. In the C) section and in other cases, education could be benefited, mainly science and technological education. The study of the mathematical courses provides a new perspective of the origin of the engineering education. With the gender and engineering studies, we would try to contribute to the objective of equality in this field. Another social implication would be a new perspective on technical professions, based on a better understanding of its antecedents and a comparative vision in different cultural contexts. Finally, the studies on the development of solar energy would be able to help its use in our present world, sometimes with the rescue of discarded options, after overcome particular situations.
