We extend to free-abelian by free groups the classic Stallings theory (describing subgroups of the free group as automata) by admitting abelian labels in the edges, and modifying consequently the folding process. This approach allow us to solve the membership problem for this family, and provides a nice geometric framework to study intersections in the case of direct products. If time allows, I will illustrate the results with an example. Joint work with Enric Ventura.
