Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia. It affects 1-2% of the general population, and increases gradually with age from 0.5% in people aged 50-59 to 9% in octogenarians. Clinically, AF duplicates the mortality rate and increases the risk of ictus 5-fold. In spite of this the treatment of AF remains deficient or inefficient, because of the incomplete knowledge of the complex pathophysiology of this disease.
