Abstract
The electrical activity within a convective cell is related to the strength of its updraft, and thus, to its potential severity. The trends in the lightning activity may help to diagnose the severe weather potential of a thunderstorm. Observational evidence suggests that the trends of the intracloud fraction of the total lightning activity may be a more robust indicator, compared to some characteristics of the cloud-to-ground fraction (e.g. positive polarity dominance).
