Antecedents The construction sector is especially stigmatized by its supposed disconnection with research and R + D + i. The character of the Industries of the Construction sector does not encourage the development of patents or utility models that, on the contrary, happen with some naturalness in the world of architectural works. The concrete sector in particular is usually associated with heavy work and large multinationals. The creation of the Catedra Blanca (University Industry Chair) between UPC and Cemex in 1999 tried to introduce research in this world, often associating itself with the nearest productive fabric. The project presented is based on this fruitful collaboration with its continuity in the ARIEN (SGR2017, Architecture Indistrue and Engineering) research group and the association of an industrialist such as Torho, with numerous collaborations with the university. Targets The proposal aims to define a façade system that relates the tradition of the Mediterranean villages and high technology. The culture of the wood curtain filters was the origin of an experience in ceramics (Biblioteca de Vila-real) made and published at Informes de la Construccion by Carlos Ferrater and Alberto Peñín based on ceramic macaroni sewn with iron bars. Despite his professional recognition, he presents several technical problems. On the one hand, the fragility of the system and on the other, the lack of structural efficiency when acting as a passive material. Thus, the idea of making macaroni in concrete, "Maconcret." Description The proposal defines a façade system based on a cylinder made of concrete with fibres and high tech cement, sewn and reinforced by an internal steel bar. The diameter of the cylinder is the minimum required for the protection of the steel and is evaluated in no more than 75mm in order to achieve the most slimmest extent possible. Once the total length is decided, by means of simple auxiliary methods, the cylinder can be cut and fixed to its two ends. The manufacturing procedure will be through the cast of concrete in molds. The concrete will be self-compactable with a special dosage and composition and will have a high resistance to white cement and a specific strategy of adhesion. The system will be in any case pre-stressed in order to approach the deformations of the steel and concrete and avoid intermediate fixings. This procedure will require the development of prototypes and trials in situ. If it is placed vertically (as in the precedent of Vila-real) the result can be used to create filters that retain the tradition of the Mediterranean peoples. If you place them horizontally, the need to pretension is safe and limited light. The system will make it possible to create self-constructed pergolas with varying sizes. Variants The system supports more complex combinations that can be the starting point for upcoming researchs. First of all, with specific entrances (of no more than 5mm) you can place extra hidden bindings by increasing the rigidity of the system. Secondly, instead of individual pieces, it will be studied with a continuous series of pieces of various diameters but made with a common mold and probably linked with very thin horizontal elements. In this way, a true façade system can be realized. The proposal vindicates the new uses of concrete as a material of the new sustainability, using the new technologies of white cement. This is a new use of high performance concrete on small stairs and at the same time to approach high technology to selfconstruction.
