Abstract
The inclusion of heterogeneities in excitable media perturbs the normal propagation of waves. If the characteristic sizes of heterogeneities and waves are similar, the interaction can promote the breakup of the waves into small pieces. Such dynamics have been observed in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, in CO oxidation in catalytic surfaces and in excitable cell cultures.
