Abstract
The "Europa Investigación" project WINGCOMP has as main goal the preparation of a proposal for the upcoming calls of the ERC Starting Grants (StG) for the years 2021 and 2022. The proposal, therefore, is part of Pillar 1, Excellent Science. If the evaluation results of the first call in 2021 prevents a resubmission in 2022, then the proposal may be reformulated and submitted to relevant calls of Pillar 3, Innovative Europe, possibly under the EIC Pathfinder umbrella. The envisaged ERC Starting Grant proposal WINGCOMP is an ambitious and interdisciplinary undertaking built on the foundations of three H2020 projects involving more than 15 European institutions. Therefore, despite being a proposal for an individual grant, WINGCOMP is expected to thrive through international collaboration. Based on this reasoning, the main goal set above can be divided into four detailed objectives, namely: EIN1. To consolidate the on-going international collaborations relevant to WINGCOMP (e.g. RWTH Aachen, IBM, EPFL, University of Illinois, Georgia Tech, TU Delft/QuTech) and clarify their potential role in the context of this interdisciplinary project; EIN2. to emphasize the independence of the PI and to strengthen the key points of the proposal via new collaborations with relevant researchers in firsttier institutions (e.g. MIT, UC Berkeley, ETH Zurich, University of Cambridge); EIN3. to write a summary of the European project proposal and perform a detailed study of its fit together with the project officer in charge of the call. Take preliminary actions in support of the preparation and possible reformulation of the proposal; and EIN4. to write, revise, and present the proposal to ERC StG 2021 and 2022. If the proposal does not make the cut, reformulate and submit to other relevant Horizon Europe calls. The main vision of the scientific proposal of WINGCOMP is the development of revolutionary computer architectures across scales (data center, systemin- package, chip) enabled by the integration of wireless millimeter-wave (60-300 GHz) and terahertz (0.3-3 THz) links within the computing system. The project has identified three computing scenarios of key relevance in Europe and worldwide (HPC data centers, quantum computers, and heterogeneous chiplet architectures) where the integration of wireless communications would have a disruptive impact. For those scenarios, the project aims to: StG1. Identify and develop key enabling wireless technologies, namely, programmable metasurfaces, cryogenic antennas/transceivers, and graphenebased antennas; StG2. analyze the context of each computing scenario from the communications (channel models, capacity analysis) and computing standpoints (architectural demands, co-design opportunities); and StG3. design protocol stacks uniquely suited to the properties of computing scenario and the opportunities enabled by the respective key emerging technologies.
