CIEFMA is a UPC’s consolidated research group aiming to conduct basic science and applied industrial research within the field of Structural Integrity, Micromechanics and Reliability of Engineering Materials. CIEFMA’s main core competences are defined by (1) its capability for successful assessment and understanding of mechanical integrity and reliability of CIEFMA-target materials (zirconia-base ceramics, stainless and high-strength steels, Ti-base alloys, ceramic-metal composites - particularly cemented carbides - and hard coatings) at different length scales; and (2) its potential for implementing advanced processing towards optimizing microstructural design and/or functionality of specific material systems. Within the above framework, research excellence, internationalization and effective knowledge transfer are transversal pillars, linked through “multidisciplinary” and “inter-sectorial” approaches, for defining CIEFMA’s strategic objectives; and thus, its scientific activity.
